Amber Glenn and musician Seb McKinnon said their dispute over the Olympic use of “The Return” was resolved amicably in February 2026. Glenn called the music-rights process complex and confusing; McKinnon said the two had spoken by phone and stressed the importance of protecting artists’ rights. Neither public account identifies where the clearance process broke down or discloses the terms of the resolution.
What song did Amber Glenn skate to?
Glenn performed to “The Return,” a track by Canadian musician Seb McKinnon, who releases music as CLANN, during the figure-skating team event at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. She had used the song for about two seasons without prior objections, according to the Associated Press and The Guardian.
How did the dispute start and end?
McKinnon raised a question about permission
After learning that Glenn had skated to his music, McKinnon posted publicly that he had not given permission and asked whether this was usual Olympic practice. His post expressed surprise; it does not establish that Glenn or her team intentionally used the track without authorization. The Associated Press reported that McKinnon later congratulated Glenn on the U.S. team’s gold medal.
Both described an amicable resolution
Glenn said the issue had been cleared up and called the episode a “hiccup” in a complex and confusing process. The Guardian reported that both sides described it as a misunderstanding rather than a conflict. In a later account, the Associated Press said Glenn and McKinnon spoke by phone and smoothed things out. McKinnon said he was happy the matter had been resolved amicably and that they both stood for protecting artists’ rights.

The Associated Press reports that figure skaters must obtain copyright permission for music used in their programs, and describes the clearance process as confusing and vulnerable to mistakes. It also reported that several skaters at the Milan Cortina Games encountered last-minute music changes or approval problems. AP connected the broader challenge to the International Skating Union’s 2014 relaxation of its music regulations, which opened the door to contemporary music in skating programs.
