You can stream with two or more cameras using OBS or another encoder; a hardware video switcher is optional. The right setup depends on how each camera connects, how much switching control you need, and whether your computer or network can handle all the feeds. Start with distinct camera angles, one primary audio source, and a private or unlisted test before broadcasting.
What a multi-camera livestream needs
A practical multi-camera setup has at least two useful camera angles, a way to connect and compose or switch those angles, an encoder or production system, a primary audio source, and a stable connection to the streaming service. YouTube describes an encoder as useful for external audio and video hardware and advanced productions with multiple cameras and microphones: YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Cameras: Choose views with different jobs, such as a wide safety shot, a presenter medium shot, and a close detail.
- Connection and switching: Bring each feed into software directly, through capture devices, over a compatible local network, or through a hardware switcher.
- Production and encoding: Software or a hardware production system selects and arranges the picture and sends the stream to the service.
- Audio: Use one clear primary microphone or mixer feed, and prevent unused camera microphones from adding distracting or delayed sound.
- Monitoring and internet: Check the outgoing picture, audio, and connection during a test, with a backup wide shot ready.
Choose how the cameras connect and switch
Compare workflows by camera count, camera outputs, computer and USB capacity, network stability, operator needs, monitoring, and whether you need separate recordings of each camera feed.
| Workflow | Useful for | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| USB cameras with streaming software | Desk productions, classes, podcasts, and small studios | Simple connections, but several cameras can compete for USB bandwidth and computer resources. |
| HDMI cameras with capture cards | Computer-based productions using cameras with HDMI outputs | Each feed enters the computer through capture hardware; check that camera output settings, capture-device inputs, and computer capacity match. |
| HDMI cameras with a hardware switcher | Events, multiple HDMI cameras, physical controls, or a dedicated operator | Adds hardware and cabling; the switcher selects which camera feed goes to the production output. |
| Compatible IP or NDI cameras | Flexible camera layouts where separate video cables are inconvenient | Video depends on local network capacity and stability; wired Ethernet may help where practical. |
When OBS is enough
OBS can switch between camera sources, so a basic two-camera setup does not require a hardware switcher. USB cameras can connect directly to the computer, while HDMI cameras generally need capture devices to appear as sources. A switcher becomes more useful when you have several HDMI inputs, want physical controls, need dedicated monitoring, or have an operator focused on switching.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When to use capture hardware or a switcher
Before buying an HDMI capture card or switcher, confirm what outputs the cameras provide, the number and type of inputs the equipment accepts, the target resolution and frame rate, and whether the computer can process the feeds. Check USB controller capacity for USB-based setups. For network cameras, assess network capacity and stability. These are workflow choices rather than universal equipment requirements.
Plan useful angles before connecting equipment
- Assign each camera a role. Use a wide shot as a safety view, then add tighter views for the presenter, a demonstration, or details.
- Keep settings compatible. Match camera resolution and frame rate where practical so switching between angles looks consistent.
- Check each shot. Confirm framing, focus, exposure, color, and that the camera remains powered and operating.
- Make the fallback obvious. Keep the wide shot easy to select if a close-up is poorly framed or a camera feed fails.

- Connect the cameras. Add USB cameras directly. Connect HDMI cameras through capture devices, or bring compatible network cameras into the software over the local network.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. It considers the intended use, computer resources, and network conditions when suggesting a starting configuration.
- Add and name sources. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Video Capture Device for a webcam or capture device. Give each source a descriptive name, such as “Wide” or “Presenter close-up,” so the operator can identify it quickly.
- Create scenes for the intended layouts. Build scenes for full-frame camera shots, split-screen, or picture-in-picture as needed. Preview the next view before switching it live.
- Choose one main audio feed. Select the primary microphone or mixer feed, mute unused camera microphones, and listen for levels and unwanted room echo.
- Check audio/video sync on every angle. Camera processing can introduce different delays. If sound and picture do not line up, adjust the relevant audio sync offset in OBS and test again.
- Configure the destination. Enter the streaming service’s server URL and stream key in the encoder settings. YouTube’s instructions explain where to get and enter those details in its encoder setup guide: YouTube encoder setup. Keep the stream key private.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check the broadcast from a viewer’s perspective before going public, then confirm that the encoder and destination show a healthy incoming stream.
YouTube says that enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. If the option is not available yet, allow time for activation rather than assuming the camera or encoder is at fault.
Test the whole production before going live
OBS recommends testing for a few minutes before a first stream rather than starting without a check. Its Quick Start Guide states: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” Use a private or unlisted broadcast to verify the production end to end.

Troubleshoot common multi-camera problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A camera is missing from the source list | Connection, capture-device compatibility, or source selection issue | Confirm the camera is powered and outputting video, verify the cable and capture input, and select the correct Video Capture Device in OBS. |
| Video stutters or frames drop | USB bandwidth, computer load, or network capacity and stability | Reduce competing device or system load, review the OBS wizard’s settings, and check the network path for network cameras or streaming. |
| Audio echoes or sounds doubled | More than one microphone is active | Keep the chosen primary mic or mixer feed active and mute unused camera audio. |
| Sound does not match a camera’s picture | Camera latency or differing processing delays | Check sync on each angle and adjust that source’s audio sync offset, then retest. |
| A switch reveals a badly framed or mismatched shot | Camera framing, exposure, color, or output settings differ | Check each camera before broadcast and keep resolution and frame rate compatible where practical. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, or live streaming is not enabled yet | Re-enter the destination details from YouTube’s live control room and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-streaming activation. |
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Camera setup does not grant rights to the material in the broadcast. Use video, music, graphics, and other content you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies and any applicable permissions before going live. A multi-camera format is a production method, not an exemption from copyright or other platform rules. Do not assume that reusing material is permitted merely because you are presenting it live; assess the rights and YouTube’s current requirements for your channel and content.
