Movies Anywhere is a free, U.S.-only digital movie locker—not a subscription streaming service. It links eligible movie purchases and valid digital codes from participating retailers into one synchronized collection. Buy an eligible film through Apple, Amazon, Fandango, Google/YouTube, or a participating TV provider, and it can generally appear in Movies Anywhere and your other connected retailers—although title eligibility, retailer availability, format, and licensing rules still apply.
It is most useful for people who buy movies from more than one store or redeem codes from Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K packages. It is not a universal library, a source of free movies, or DRM-free ownership.

What Movies Anywhere does
Movies Anywhere acts as a bridge between participating digital retailers. The basic flow is:

Retailers do not exchange their entire video catalogs. Movies Anywhere synchronizes qualifying movie rights through its own service. A movie can therefore appear in Movies Anywhere but not in every connected retailer if that store does not carry the title, edition, resolution, or relevant rights.
Is Movies Anywhere free?
Yes. There is no stated Movies Anywhere subscription fee or recurring charge for maintaining an account. The movies are not free: you purchase them through a participating retailer, and Movies Anywhere links you to that retailer rather than processing the transaction itself.
Internet access, mobile data, compatible hardware, and retailer charges are separate. Retailer refund policies also apply to purchases made through that retailer.

Participating retailers
The following retailers are listed by Movies Anywhere as participating as of June 8, 2026:
- Apple iTunes
- Amazon Prime Video
- Fandango
- Google Play/YouTube
- Xfinity
- Verizon Fios TV
- DIRECTV
Interfaces may use different branding depending on your device—for example, Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango’s movie storefront, Google TV, or YouTube. Participation does not mean that every title in a retailer’s catalog qualifies. Check the individual movie before buying. See the current participant list.
Participating studios
The current participant list includes:
- Disney, including Twentieth Century Film
- Sony Pictures
- Universal Pictures
- Warner Bros.
- Lions Gate Entertainment
Studio participation is not a blanket guarantee. A particular film can still be excluded because of catalog rights, distribution arrangements, edition, bundle structure, or retailer availability.
Who should create an account?
Movies Anywhere is a strong fit if you buy films from multiple participating stores, collect physical discs with digital codes, or watch across several device ecosystems. It is a weaker fit if you mainly buy television episodes, rentals, subscription titles, or movies from nonparticipating studios.
The service is intended for legal residents of the United States, U.S. territories, and specified associated states. The welcome page states that registration is for U.S. residents age 18 or older. Review the Terms of Use if your location or eligibility is unclear.
How to get started
- Visit MoviesAnywhere.com or install the official app.
- Choose the sign-up option and provide the required account information.
- Confirm eligibility and accept the Terms of Use.
- Open the account or retailer-connection area.
- Connect the participating retailer accounts where you actually own movies.
- Sign in to the correct Apple, Amazon, Google/YouTube, Fandango, Xfinity, Verizon, or DIRECTV accounts.
- Allow time for eligible titles to populate.
Only one Movies Anywhere account can be connected to a particular account at each retailer. A retailer account cannot be switched to another Movies Anywhere account more than once in a 180-day period. That restriction makes it important to connect the right accounts the first time.
Connect accounts carefully
- Verify the email address or username before authorizing a retailer connection.
- Do not connect a family member’s separate retailer account unless the arrangement is intentional.
- Check your Movies Anywhere library after each connection.
- Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication where the retailer supports it.
- Do not disconnect and reconnect accounts casually, especially if you are considering moving a retailer account to another Movies Anywhere account.
Menus and labels can change, so use the current Movies Anywhere Help Center for account-connection instructions.
How to buy movies strategically
Movies Anywhere reduces platform lock-in, but it does not eliminate differences between retailers. Before completing a purchase, compare:
- Whether the title is Movies Anywhere eligible.
- The current price and sale history.
- The available resolution, such as HD or 4K.
- HDR and audio support.
- Whether the listing is a purchase or a rental.
- Whether it is a bundle or special edition.
- Bonus features and included content.
- Playback quality on your preferred device.
- The retailer’s refund and customer-support policies.
- Whether the title will be available on each connected retailer you use.
Movies Anywhere may display retailer offers, but the purchase is completed with the retailer. A refund or purchase-record dispute should generally be handled by that retailer.
How to redeem a digital code
- Go to moviesanywhere.com/redeem or open the app’s Redeem section.
- Enter the eligible, valid, unused code.
- Submit it for validation.
- After successful validation, check your Movies Anywhere collection.
- If your retailer accounts are connected, check those libraries as well.
Codes included with Blu-ray, DVD, or 4K/UHD combination packages must be authorized and obtained with the original package by you or a family member, according to the Terms of Use. Unauthorized sale, transfer, or purchase of codes is prohibited. Some packages direct you to a studio-specific or retailer-specific redemption site instead of Movies Anywhere.

If a code fails
- Check for typing mistakes and confusing characters.
- Confirm that the studio and movie are eligible.
- Check whether the package specifies another redemption portal.
- Make sure the code has not already been redeemed.
- Keep the package and receipt until redemption succeeds.
- Refresh the library or sign out and back in.
- Contact Movies Anywhere for a Movies Anywhere redemption problem, and the retailer or studio for a retailer-specific or issuer-specific problem.

Do not treat “available at a participating retailer” as equivalent to “eligible for Movies Anywhere.” Search for the title on Movies Anywhere and check its eligibility before purchasing.
Where can you watch?
You can watch eligible titles through the Movies Anywhere website, supported mobile and connected-device apps, and connected retailer apps where the title is available. Exact browser, television, mobile, and operating-system compatibility changes over time, so check the Help Center for current device support.
Movies Anywhere supports features including 4K UHD, HDR, Dolby Vision, 5.1 surround sound, and Dolby Atmos at the service or app level. Actual playback depends on the movie, source entitlement, retailer version, app, device, display, audio equipment, and internet connection. A title appearing in your collection does not guarantee identical quality or bonus content in every connected app.

Offline downloads and streaming limits
Downloads remain controlled playback files tied to the service and device; they are not unrestricted files you can keep or transfer freely.
- Eight: permitted Movies Anywhere-compatible download devices at one time.
- Sixteen: different devices allowed within a rolling 12-month period.
- Ninety days: a downloaded-content device must connect to the internet and you must log in at least once during this period for downloaded Movies Anywhere content to remain available for playback.
- Four: maximum concurrent streams per account.
- Two: maximum simultaneous streams of the same movie per account.
Retailers can impose separate download rules when you watch through their apps.

Household use and profiles
Movies Anywhere permits up to four concurrent streams, with no more than two streams of the same eligible movie at once. Profiles and ratings controls are available, but the Terms state that profiles and their access controls are set on a device-by-device basis. A restricted profile may therefore need to be selected independently on each device.
This is not a guarantee of a universal family-sharing plan. Account sharing remains subject to the Terms of Use and creates privacy and security considerations.
What does “owning” a movie mean?
In practical terms, a digital purchase gives you an entitlement or license to stream or download a particular eligible movie and resolution under the applicable service rules. That is different from:
- A physical disc you possess.
- A rental or other temporary entitlement.
- Access supplied by a subscription.
- A promotional or limited-time viewing right.
- A DRM-free video file with unrestricted copying and playback.
Movies Anywhere’s Terms describe the collection as entitlements to specific eligible movies and resolutions. Temporary entitlements do not become part of the permanent collection and are not shared with connected retailers.

Eligible entitlements generally remain in the collection while valid, but Movies Anywhere reserves the ability to suspend, modify, discontinue, or make features, content, or device access unavailable. Licensing changes, retailer changes, refunds, outages, account termination, or other events can affect access.
Movies Anywhere is more convenient than maintaining isolated retailer libraries, but it remains a licensed digital-access system rather than a guarantee of permanent, DRM-free ownership. The Terms also allow termination of an account that remains inactive for one year after notice, which can remove access to Movies Anywhere streamed and downloaded content.

Connecting retailers improves convenience but creates data-sharing consequences. The Privacy Policy says Movies Anywhere may share information with connected retailers and participating studios. The categories described can include account, activity, usage, technical, device, location, and video data, subject to the policy and the policies of the receiving companies.

You can manage certain video-data-sharing preferences in account settings, but opting out does not necessarily stop operational processing or all sharing of non-video data. Review the privacy settings and the policies of the connected retailers before linking accounts.

Alternatives and trade-offs
You can keep purchases solely in Apple, Amazon, Fandango, Google/YouTube, or a participating TV-provider store. That may be simpler if you use one ecosystem, but it gives up Movies Anywhere’s cross-retailer synchronization.
Physical discs provide a tangible copy and may include digital codes, while Movies Anywhere provides portability between participating digital services. Neither option guarantees that every desired title, format, bonus feature, or future playback route will be available everywhere.
If a title is not supported by Movies Anywhere, you may need to keep it with the issuing retailer or use the studio or retailer redemption method printed with the package.
Final verdict
Movies Anywhere is worth using for U.S. movie buyers who purchase across multiple participating retailers or redeem eligible disc codes. Its free synchronization layer can make a scattered digital collection easier to access and can help you choose the retailer with the best current price.
Its limits matter: not every movie transfers, the service is U.S.-only, retailers still control purchases and refunds, quality can differ by platform, privacy implications accompany account linking, and digital access remains licensed rather than DRM-free ownership. Confirm eligibility title by title and connect only the accounts you intend to use.
