Monsieur Spade is a six-episode AMC limited crime drama starring Clive Owen as Sam Spade, now retired in the South of France. It premiered in 2024, and its Netflix availability has changed by country: Netflix’s page says the series is unavailable in the country it currently reflects, while a catalog report records its U.S. removal in August 2025. Check your local services before subscribing or renting.
What is Monsieur Spade about?
Set in 1963, roughly twenty years after the events of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, the series finds private detective Sam Spade living in Bozouls, in the South of France. His retirement is disrupted by the murders of six nuns and the arrival of a mysterious child, drawing him into a new investigation. AMC describes the six-episode series as a neo-noir crime drama.

Clive Owen stars as Spade and also executive produces. Scott Frank and Tom Fontana co-created, wrote and executive produced the series; AMC says Frank also directed. The show was shot on location in France.
Is Monsieur Spade based on The Maltese Falcon?
It is a later chapter for the character, not a remake of Hammett’s 1930 novel. AMC describes the series as centering on the novel’s protagonist, placing Spade in a new story decades after the earlier case. If you want to read the original Sam Spade story, Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon is the natural starting point.

Is Monsieur Spade on Netflix?
Netflix availability varies by country and has changed over time, so the title alone is not enough to establish that it is currently available. Netflix’s official page currently says the series is unavailable in the country shown there. Separately, What’s on Netflix reports that season one left Netflix in the United States in August 2025. Check your own country’s Netflix catalog for its live status.
Where can you watch Monsieur Spade?
AMC announced the series’ January 14, 2024 premiere on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn TV. AMC+ still has an official series page, and a current viewing-options aggregator lists AMC+ and Acorn TV subscriptions as well as Amazon Video digital purchase. Those listings can differ by country and change, so confirm that the show appears in your market before choosing a service.

To check your options, look for the title directly in the local catalogs for Netflix, AMC+ and Acorn TV, then check the digital store available to you for a purchase option. The original launch platforms establish where the show premiered, not necessarily where it can be watched today.
Who is in the cast?

Is it worth adding to a noir watchlist?
The verified setup will appeal most to viewers curious about a later-life Sam Spade story: a retired detective, a French setting in 1963 and a murder investigation that pulls him back to work. It is a limited series rather than an open-ended procedural, with six episodes. Those details help set expectations, but they do not establish a critical consensus or guarantee that the show will suit every noir fan.
