Directed by Reema Kagti, it looks at how Shaikh and his friends made films for their community. It is not the same work as Faiza Ahmad Khan’s documentary Supermen of Malegaon: the documentary centers on the making of one of Shaikh’s films, while Kagti’s feature traces the beginnings and development of his filmmaking journey over more than a decade.
What is “Mollywood” in Malegaon?
“Mollywood” is a label for a hyperlocal filmmaking phenomenon in Malegaon, not the official name of a recognized film industry. Its significance lies in who made the films, whom they were made for, and where audiences encountered them. Reporting by The Indian Express describes a parallel video-film scene that drew on local performers and reflected local concerns.
Shaikh’s early work was closely tied to exhibition as well as production: according to the interview, he released an early film in his own video parlour. The article reports that he earned four times what he had spent and that others followed his example. That figure is an anecdote reported about one film, not an independently audited measure or a general return for Malegaon filmmakers.
Is Superboys of Malegaon based on a true story?
Yes. The Central Board of Film Certification’s record identifies Nasir Shaikh as an amateur filmmaker and summarizes the story as his decision to make a film for the people of Malegaon, made by the people of Malegaon. The CBFC lists the film as Hindi and gives its certification date as 24 October 2024. Certification is not the same as a premiere or release date. See the CBFC record.
#1 Best Overall
The feature is a dramatic retelling inspired by real events, not a documentary record. Kagti has described the production team spending time in Malegaon and speaking with Shaikh, his friends, and family. She said the actors were not asked to impersonate the real people: “With all the actors, we didn’t try to mimic anybody. It was about trying to get a sense of the person.” She also described using hair, makeup, wardrobe, and production design to evoke the period. Read Kagti’s interview with NDTV.
How the feature differs from Supermen of Malegaon
The similar titles refer to distinct works. Faiza Ahmad Khan’s Supermen of Malegaon is a 2008 documentary; Superboys of Malegaon is Kagti’s later fiction feature. Kagti has explained that the documentary focuses on the making of one of Shaikh’s films, while the feature widens the lens to follow the genesis of his filmmaking journey over more than a decade. NDTV’s interview with Kagti discusses the distinction.
Rank #2
| Work | Format | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Supermen of Malegaon (2008) | Documentary | The making of a particular film by Shaikh and his collaborators. |
| Superboys of Malegaon | Fiction feature | A dramatic account of the beginning and development of Shaikh’s filmmaking journey across more than a decade. |
This difference matters: the feature draws on the real people and filmmaking culture, but its dramatic reconstruction should not be mistaken for documentary footage or a scene-by-scene factual record.
Why Malegaon’s filmmaking culture matters to the story
The setting is not merely a backdrop for an unusual filmmaking hobby. Shaikh’s video-parlour release and the local scene that followed connect filmmaking with community exhibition: local people could appear on screen, recognize their own concerns, and watch films in a familiar place. The Indian Express account presents laughter as part of that social context. In the feature, a line assigned to the Nasir character says, “The need of the hour was to make people laugh, considering people were dealing with so many troubles.” That is dialogue spoken by the character, not a verified quotation from the historical Shaikh.
Kagti’s emphasis on research and evoking people rather than copying them also points to the film’s central challenge: honoring a distinctive local story without reducing its makers to a novelty. The feature’s approach, as she described it, was to convey a sense of the people and period through the ensemble and production design rather than claim exact imitation.
