Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning delivers the enormous action and emotional farewell fans may want from an Ethan Hunt finale, but its 169-minute runtime and continuity-heavy story make the journey feel uneven. It is a spectacular, sentimental conclusion that sometimes gets bogged down explaining how the franchise’s past fits together.
What is The Final Reckoning about?
Released in 2025, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is the eighth Ethan Hunt feature and continues the story begun in Dead Reckoning Part One (2023). The film follows Hunt and his allies as they confront a threat tied to the preceding chapter. Paramount’s official synopsis is promotional rather than a detailed plot summary, so this review avoids spoilers.
Christopher McQuarrie directed and co-wrote the film with Erik Jendresen. Tom Cruise returns as Hunt, alongside Hayley Atwell as Grace, Ving Rhames as Luther, Simon Pegg as Benji, Esai Morales as Gabriel and Pom Klementieff as Paris. The ensemble also includes Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Hannah Waddingham, Nick Offerman, Tramell Tillman, Rolf Saxon and Lucy Tulugarjuk. Paramount’s film page lists the cast and credits.
Do the action and scale deliver?
Yes: the film’s greatest strength is the scale and commitment of its action. The spectacle is built around Ethan Hunt’s physical risk-taking and the familiar pleasure of watching a plan become more dangerous at each turn. The set pieces provide the movie’s clearest momentum, and the sheer ambition suits a story positioned as a major chapter-ending event.

That emphasis is reflected in Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus, which calls the film “Gargantuan in action, runtime, and scope” and describes it as a sentimental sendoff for Hunt. That is the site’s aggregate consensus, not a verdict shared by every reviewer.
Does the long runtime work?
At 169 minutes, according to Paramount, the film has room for extended action, returning characters and connective story material. It also has less freedom to let those elements pass without explanation. The result is a rhythm that can lurch between thrilling spectacle and stretches of exposition.

In The Atlantic, Shirley Li argues that the effort to connect Hunt’s assignments, allies and enemies into one continuing saga produces “an awkwardly paced, lethargic-in-stretches film.” That criticism identifies the central trade-off: callbacks and continuity can make a finale feel like a culmination, but they can also slow the immediate story. Viewers who value a tightly paced standalone adventure may find those pauses more frustrating than fans invested in the series’ accumulated history.
Does it feel like a satisfying Ethan Hunt farewell?
The film aims for emotional closure as well as a final test of Hunt’s endurance. Its earnestness gives the returning ensemble and the mission’s stakes a sense of weight, and the farewell dimension is a meaningful part of its appeal. But that same solemnity is not always an advantage. In an AP streaming roundup, AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr’s review is quoted as saying: “In a series that has often been best when it’s not taking itself too seriously, dour developments start to feel a little unintentionally silly.”

The tension between sentiment and the series’ more playful spirit helps explain why the ending may land differently for different viewers. The film’s scale makes the sendoff feel consequential; its serious tone can also make some developments feel heavier than the franchise’s customary blend of danger and wit.
How has the film been received?

When accessed in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 80% Tomatometer score from 427 reviews and an 88% Popcornmeter score from more than 10,000 verified ratings. The split in critical emphasis is more useful than treating either percentage as a final answer: the movie’s action and closing sentiment win praise, while its pacing and continuity demands draw criticism. Whether that balance works for you depends on how much you enjoy franchise-wide callbacks and extended spectacle.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is an extravagant, heartfelt finale whose action often earns its scale. It is less successful when it pauses to bind the series into a single extended saga. If you want an Ethan Hunt sendoff built around set pieces and emotional closure, it delivers; if you want lean pacing and a light touch, the long stretches of exposition may temper the thrill.
