MiniMax’s Hailuo video technology can produce short, space-opera battle shots with camera movement, explosions and large-scale composition from a prompt or reference. That is a meaningful change in who can prototype spectacular imagery. It is not proof that a finished Star Wars battle—or a movie—can be generated in seconds.
The viral demonstrations matter because the first convincing draft of a shot is becoming cheap and accessible. The limits are still substantial: clips are short, continuity breaks, many attempts may be discarded, editing remains necessary, and recognizable franchise material raises copyright and trademark risks.
What MiniMax’s tool actually is
MiniMax is the developer. Hailuo AI was the consumer-facing brand associated with earlier systems such as Video-01 and Hailuo 02. MiniMax’s current API documentation presents MiniMax H3 as a general-purpose multimodal video model. H3 can work from text, still images, video and audio, and can use references for subjects, motion, camera direction, style, voice and editing rhythm. The documented workflow also includes text-to-video, first-frame and first/last-frame control, reference-to-video, video editing and 2K output. H3 jobs are asynchronous rather than instant browser actions: an application submits a task, receives a task_id, polls for completion and then downloads the resulting file. A current API request uses https://api.minimax.io/v2/video_generation with "model": "MiniMax-H3"; the status endpoint is https://api.minimax.io/v2/query/video_generation/{task_id}. The documentation recommends polling at roughly 10-second intervals and lists succeeded, failed and cancelled as terminal states.

Was the viral battle really made “in seconds”?
Unless the original post identifies its model, prompt, inputs, number of attempts and editing process, the total production time cannot be verified. “In seconds” can refer to the time needed to write a prompt, or simply to the length of the resulting clip. It does not establish that a complete sequence was generated in that interval.
MiniMax’s own Hailuo 02 announcement (June 18, 2025) described 768p six-second, 768p ten-second and 1080p six-second variants. Its showcase combined multiple short clips and, according to MiniMax, involved three artists working for about 1.5 days. Those are company-reported production details, not an independent benchmark; the announcement is available at MiniMax’s Hailuo 02 announcement.

What makes a space battle impressive
A strong clip demonstrates several separate capabilities rather than one vague quality called “cinematic.”

- Motion and camera direction: a tracking move, pan, push-in or pull-back follows an intended action instead of drifting.
- Scale and physics: capital ships feel larger than fighters, while light, debris and explosions react plausibly.
- Temporal coherence: vehicles retain recognizable shapes instead of changing geometry between frames.
- Prompt adherence: the requested maneuver occurs rather than being replaced by generic spectacle.
- Visual identity: the shot can evoke space-opera grammar without reproducing a protected character, ship, logo or exact film shot.
- Audio: any dialogue, ambience or effects may be generated, supplied as references or added later; a striking silent image is not a finished scene.
H3’s reference and first/last-frame controls are intended to improve subject and shot continuity, but controls do not guarantee a stable character or vehicle across a long sequence.
Where the technology still breaks
- Faces, armor, clothing and body proportions can change between frames or shots.
- Ships may gain or lose geometry, weapons can bend or duplicate, and insignia or text are often unreadable.
- Fast camera moves can become unstable; explosions may look attractive without a consistent cause-and-effect chain.
- Hands, small objects and distant fighters frequently degrade.
- Each generation is short, so an extended battle requires many clips and careful cutting.
- Moving from text-to-video to image-to-video can change framing and visual identity.
- Moderation or security review can block a prompt or output, and generation latency can exceed the clip’s running time.
- Watermarks, plan limits, commercial terms and account rules vary. MiniMax’s API pricing page says failed generations or videos sent to security review should not consume video points; do not assume the identical rule applies to every consumer plan.
The copyright fault line
Using a prompt that names Star Wars characters or ships is not the same as using an original space-opera concept. Private experimentation, public posting and commercial exploitation create different practical risks, and the answer depends on jurisdiction, inputs, output, platform rules and the specific use.
Private tests
A private experiment is less exposed than a public advertisement, but “private” does not automatically resolve copyright, trademark, publicity or contract questions. Check the service’s terms and the rights in any reference images, audio or footage you upload.
Public and commercial releases
Posting recognizable characters, ships, logos, dialogue or music can invite takedowns or claims. Advertising, paid client work, merchandise, monetized channels, games and content implying official affiliation carry substantially greater risk than an unmonetized personal test. Legal review is prudent before release.

What the MiniMax lawsuit does—and does not—show
Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. Discovery sued MiniMax in the United States, alleging that Hailuo was trained on copyrighted material and could generate recognizable protected imagery. A June 2026 analysis reports that a federal judge denied MiniMax’s motion to dismiss on May 22, 2026, allowing the case to proceed. That is a procedural ruling, not a final finding that MiniMax infringed or that every output is unlawful. The analysis is at Offit Kurman; the complaint is available at CourtHouse News.
The dispute also separates two questions: whether training used protected works, and whether a particular output infringes. Resolving one would not automatically resolve the other.
Licensed generation is a different model
The Associated Press reported in December 2025 that Disney and OpenAI announced a three-year agreement covering more than 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars characters for Sora-generated videos. That is a negotiated license, not permission for MiniMax users or other systems. Read the report at Associated Press.
Why filmmakers, studios and advertisers should care
Previsualization gets cheaper
Directors and producers can test camera angles, action beats, environments and rough sequences before commissioning full visual-effects work. A concept illustration can become a moving pitch shot, narrowing the gap between storyboard, animatic and presentation.

Selection becomes a core creative skill
When dozens of candidates are affordable, value shifts toward prompting, directing, choosing, editing and maintaining continuity. Rendering a spectacular frame is easier than deciding which frame serves a story.
Rights monitoring scales up
Rights holders may need to watch not only copied uploads but also generated videos that reproduce recognizable characters, settings and branding. Studios face a strategic choice among licensing, partnerships, internal systems, output restrictions, takedowns and litigation.
Fan work and advertising diverge
Original science-fiction prototypes, mood films and social experiments are sensible uses when their assets are rights-cleared. A client campaign or monetized franchise video needs documented permissions, clear terms and a review process.

The API pricing page lists one-month packages of $1,000 for 3,760 video points, $2,500 for 9,920, $4,500 for 18,900 and $6,000 for 26,780, plus custom pricing. These are discounted API resource packages, not confirmed consumer Hailuo subscription prices. The page also lists historical deductions for Hailuo 2.3 Fast and Hailuo 2.3/Hailuo 02, including 0.7 to 2 points for specified six- or ten-second outputs. Treat those dated figures as API documentation, not a universal current retail rate: MiniMax API pricing.
For a responsible evaluation, record the model and version, account geography, exact prompt, references, number of attempts, generation time, duration, resolution, audio, edits, moderation messages and applicable license. Test an invented-fleet battle, a non-infringing space-opera prompt, a direct franchise-name prompt and a continuity sequence from original concept art.
The larger shift
MiniMax has not made a Star Wars movie in seconds. It has helped make a convincing first draft of a spectacular shot cheap enough for almost anyone to attempt. That lowers the cost of previsualization and experimentation while increasing the volume of rights-sensitive material that studios, platforms and creators must evaluate.
