Neither the mezzanine nor the balcony is automatically the best seat. In theaters that use both names, the mezzanine is often the nearer raised level and the balcony is higher or farther back—but venues do not use the terms consistently. Compare the exact seats on the venue’s map, including distance, angle, overhangs, view restrictions and access routes.
What do “mezzanine” and “balcony” mean?
A mezzanine is often the first raised seating level above the main floor; a balcony is often a higher or farther-back tier. These are tendencies, not standard definitions. Walter Kerr Theatre and James Earl Jones Theatre list mezzanine and balcony as separate levels. Santa Fe Opera, by contrast, describes its mezzanine as “also known as a balcony.” Check the venue’s own seating map and terminology before comparing sections.
Even within one theater, a section name cannot tell you everything about the view. At Santa Fe Opera, the mezzanine begins to overhang the main floor at row W. Denver Center for the Performing Arts also gives a venue-specific example where the front row of the balcony is closer to the stage than the front row of the mezzanine. Neither layout establishes a rule for other venues.
How to choose the better seat for your priorities
For a balanced view of the stage
Compare centered seats and their actual distance from the stage. A raised seat can help you take in the overall stage picture, but the available venue information does not establish a universal winner between these levels. Row, angle and the theater’s layout matter more than the label.

To feel closer to performers
Compare the specific rows and angles rather than assuming the mezzanine is closer. A front mezzanine seat may be nearer than a rear balcony seat, but the result depends on the building. Use the venue’s map to judge the actual positions.
To avoid an obstructed or limited view
Read the seat-specific restriction notes and inspect the official map. Check for overhangs, side angles, railings, boxes and production elements that could affect what you see. Bass Performance Hall says limited-view seats are marked during purchase and notes that certain mezzanine box seats can have obstructed sightlines. Santa Fe Opera specifies where its mezzanine overhang begins.

When stairs or mobility affect your choice
Do not infer elevator access from a section name. Routes differ substantially: Walter Kerr Theatre lists 37 steps to the mezzanine and 52 to the balcony, and says it has no elevator or escalator. James Earl Jones Theatre lists 25 steps to the mezzanine and 55 to the balcony, while also saying an elevator serves both levels. These counts describe those theaters only; they are not a guide to other buildings.
For access needs, use the venue’s current accessibility information to check routes and designated accessible seating, then contact the box office or audience-services staff about your specific situation. Accessible seats may be limited to particular locations, so do not assume a section offers the route or seating arrangement you need.

What to check before buying
- Open the venue’s official seating map. Confirm whether mezzanine and balcony are separate sections or alternate names for a level.
- Compare the exact seats. Look at row, position across the theater and distance from the stage; do not rank seats by level name alone.
- Read view notes. Check for limited-view labels, overhangs, boxes, railings and side-angle restrictions.
- Check access information. Verify stairs, elevators, steps within rows and accessible-seat locations on the venue’s current page.
- Ask the venue when a detail is unclear. Contact the box office or audience-services team, especially if a particular route or accessible location is important.
Maps, access routes, elevator service and limited-view information can change. Confirm the current details with the venue before purchase.

| Walter Kerr Theatre | Lists 37 steps to the mezzanine and 52 to the balcony; no elevator or escalator. | Check the route to the specific level rather than assuming access. |
| James Earl Jones Theatre | Lists 25 steps to the mezzanine and 55 to the balcony, and says an elevator serves both levels. | Access arrangements differ from venue to venue. |
| Bass Performance Hall | Says certain mezzanine box seats can have obstructed sightlines and limited-view seats are marked during purchase. | Read seat-specific restrictions, including within a named section. |
