Matt Rife’s most widely discussed controversy began with a domestic-violence joke in the opening of his Netflix special Natural Selection, released November 15, 2023. Critics objected to the joke’s punchline and gendered premise; a few days later, Rife posted an “official apology” link that led to a shop selling special-needs helmets. He later defended comedy as a way some people might process difficult experiences. A separate backlash followed e.l.f. Beauty’s decision to feature him in a 2025 campaign. These episodes involve different claims, and the ticket-price complaints around his tour are less conclusive than some accounts imply.
What was the joke that started the backlash?
Matt Rife: Natural Selection opens with Rife telling a story about a restaurant hostess with a black eye. His punchline is: “Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.” He then says he was “testing the water” to see whether the audience would be fun, adding that starting with domestic violence should make the rest of the show smooth sailing. ABC Arts and TIME reported on the joke and the response to it. ABC Arts · TIME

The controversy was about more than Rife’s general comedic style: it centered on a specific joke that makes violence against a woman the punchline and draws on a stereotype about women’s domestic roles. Domestic-violence advocate Tarang Chawla told ABC: “It’s not that you can’t make jokes about certain topics — I don’t think any topic is off limits. But I do think it does matter who is making a joke, and what are they trying to achieve?” Chawla described the apparent aim as testing whether Rife could “get away with” a domestic-violence joke.
ABC also quoted a 1800RESPECT spokesperson: “jokes and casual statements about domestic, family and sexual violence can be distressing for people affected by violence.” Those objections focus on how a joke frames violence and how it may land for people affected by it, rather than establishing that every audience member reacted the same way.

Why did the “official apology” make things worse?
On November 20, 2023, Rife posted an Instagram story saying, “If you’ve ever been offended by a joke I’ve told, here’s a link to my official apology.” The link led to a shop selling special-needs helmets, as reported by TIME and ABC Arts.
Critics viewed the post as dismissive rather than as an attempt to address their concerns: it mocked the idea of apologizing and used disability as the punchline. The link became a second flashpoint because it shifted the exchange from disagreement about the original joke to a further insult aimed at people with disabilities.
What did Rife say later about the joke?
In an interview reported by The Independent on August 17, 2024, Rife said comedy could help people process uncomfortable experiences. “Sometimes people need to laugh to heal through the things that make them uncomfortable,” he said. The Independent also reported his claim that hundreds of domestic-violence victims had contacted him in support. That is Rife’s account; it does not establish how survivors generally felt.
The Independent reported that before Natural Selection was released, Rife had described the special as “way more for guys” and said, “I don’t pander my career to women.” Those remarks provide context for the discussion about the special’s audience and gendered humor, but they do not change what the opening joke says.

Why did e.l.f. Beauty face criticism for casting Rife?
In August 2025, e.l.f. Beauty launched “e.l.f.ino & schmarnes,” a legal-advertising parody featuring Rife and drag performer Heidi N Closet. The company’s August 11 campaign announcement framed it as a campaign about affordable cosmetics. Fast Company reported that some customers criticized Rife’s casting, citing his earlier domestic-violence joke and a 2024 Hollywood Bowl joke at the expense of trans people. The report summarizes those customers’ criticism; it does not provide the full transcript or context of the Hollywood Bowl joke.
Fast Company reported e.l.f.’s response: “You know us. We’re always listening and we’ve heard you. This campaign aimed to humorously spotlight beauty injustice. We understand we missed the mark with people we care about in our e.l.f. community. While E.l.f.ino & Schmarnes closes today, we’ll continue to make the case against overpriced beauty.” The company said the campaign was closing, while maintaining its message about beauty prices. Fast Company reported that the statement did not directly apologize or remove the video at that time. Fast Company
What is known about the tour ticket-price complaints?
TIME reported that fans complained about ticket prices after Rife announced his ProbleMATTic tour and posted a presale code that increased demand on Ticketmaster. Fans blamed the platform and Rife, but the report does not establish who set the prices or quantify the code’s effect. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a dispute involving fan complaints than to say Rife personally raised or controlled ticket prices. TIME
Quick Recap
How to understand the controversies separately
- The special: The first backlash centered on the wording and premise of one joke in Natural Selection, not simply on Rife’s career or comedic style.
- The response: Critics objected to both the violence-as-punchline framing and the later helmet-shop link, which they considered dismissive and ableist.
- Rife’s defense: His later comments described laughter as potentially helpful for some people; they should be read as his explanation, not as a universal account of survivors’ views.
- The brand episode: The e.l.f. dispute concerned the company’s choice to cast Rife after earlier backlash, and its statement that the campaign had missed the mark.
- The ticket dispute: Fans’ complaints are documented, but personal control over prices is not established by the cited reporting.
