Many Churches Are Closing. What Happens to Their Buildings Next?

When a congregation closes, its building does not have one inevitable fate. It may continue as a place of worship under a new congregation, be adapted for another use, be preserved as a historic site—or sit empty, deteriorate, and eventually be demolished. Which future is possible depends on the building, its resources and rules, and what the surrounding community needs.

Church closures are not the same as declining religious affiliation

Measures of religious identity and counts of closed buildings answer different questions. Pew Research Center’s 2023–24 Religious Landscape Study found that Christianity’s share of U.S. adults had declined over the longer term, while the share identifying as religiously unaffiliated had risen. Pew also reported that several measures of U.S. religious composition had been relatively stable since about 2020. The study describes people’s religious identity; it does not count church buildings that have closed. Pew Research Center’s findings on U.S. religious identity therefore should not be treated as a closure tally.

Geography matters, too. The National Churches Trust’s 2024–25 annual review says Wales has 3,500 Christian places of worship, with nearly 200 closures since 2015 and at least 300 more predicted in the coming decade. Those figures and that forecast concern Wales, not the United States or the world. The Trust says redundant buildings may be sold to a new congregation, but more often are sold for redevelopment, potentially losing their community role or having their interiors hidden or stripped. The National Churches Trust’s 2024–25 annual review sets out the Welsh estimate and forecast.

What can happen to a church building after closure?

A closure can lead to several different outcomes. A Philadelphia study supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts documented at least 23 historic sacred places demolished from 2011 to 2015. It also found that many other historic sacred places remained in religious use after their original congregations left. The study described buildings taken over by another congregation, adapted as schools or apartments, or left abandoned and at risk of deterioration or demolition. These are findings from a historical, place-specific study—not a current national count. The Philadelphia study illustrates how varied the outcomes can be.

Possible future What it can mean What shapes whether it works
Another congregation takes over Worship continues, though the denomination, congregation, or pattern of use may change. Whether a new congregation wants the site, can meet its needs, and can manage the building’s condition and costs.
Adaptive reuse The building becomes housing, a school, or another use; the original religious function ends. Whether the layout, condition, finances, planning rules, and local demand make a new use feasible.
Heritage care or preservation A heritage organization may maintain the building or preserve it for public appreciation rather than regular worship. The building’s significance, the available caretaker or organization, and resources for upkeep.
Vacancy, deterioration, or demolition The building loses its use and may decline or be removed. Its physical condition, repair burden, ownership, legal process, and whether a viable new use or caretaker can be found.

The table describes possibilities, not a standardized ranking or a guarantee that every building can be saved. A building’s history and significant features can also constrain or guide a conversion. Historic England notes that former places of worship may be sold with covenants and says adaptation should take account of a building’s history and significance, conserving important features while allowing change. In England, the Church of England says its closure process seeks suitable alternative uses; an outcome may be conversion or preservation by the Churches Conservation Trust. Other denominations and jurisdictions follow different procedures. Historic England’s guidance on closing places of worship and the Church of England’s closed-church guidance describe the English context.

Why does one building find a new life while another does not?

There is no single deciding factor. A sound building in a useful location may attract a new congregation or buyer; a building with urgent repairs, a difficult layout, limited demand, or restrictive legal conditions may have fewer options. Ownership and leadership also matter: someone must be able to make decisions, assess the property, and manage a transition. Local interest can influence whether people advocate for worship, community use, or heritage care.

Repair costs can narrow the choices before a building is formally sold or repurposed. In an August 2024 article, National Churches Trust chief executive Claire Walker said: “Many church closures take place as the money cannot be found to carry out urgent repairs. Fixing a roof can cost over half a million pounds. The backlog of repairs for the Church of England’s churches alone is at least £1 billion, and the annual need is estimated to be £150 million a year.” The backlog and annual-need figures in that statement refer specifically to Church of England churches. The Trust’s article also reports the poll on which it focused.

For congregations weighing a sale or transition, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s guidance discusses assembling professionals, appraising and listing a property, and assessing potential buyers and uses. It is a U.S.-focused resource, not a substitute for local legal, financial, planning, or denominational advice. Its guide to transitioning older and historic sacred places outlines steps congregations can consider.

What does closure mean for people who use the church?

A building can serve as more than a worship space, so a change of use may also change where people gather and what local services remain. The National Churches Trust reported a Whitestone Insight poll of 2,667 UK adult Christians interviewed online in July 2024. Asked hypothetically what they would do if their local church building closed, 22% said they would stop attending services, 7% said they would attend only online, and a further 7% said they would attend less often. These are stated intentions from a UK poll, not observed behavior after actual closures and not a U.S. finding. The poll report gives the question and results.

The effects of a transition depend on what replaces the building’s former role. Another congregation may keep worship on site; a community or educational use may preserve a gathering place while changing its purpose. A private redevelopment may provide a new use but restrict public access or obscure historic interiors. The outcome for the building and the outcome for its community are related, but they are not identical.

Why there is no single global closure number

The available figures measure different things in different places and periods: Wales’s reported closures and forecast, a Philadelphia demolition count covering 2011–2015, and UK respondents’ answers to a hypothetical question in 2024. They cannot be combined into a worldwide rate. Likewise, U.S. religious-affiliation trends cannot be used to infer how many buildings have closed. The evidence supports a picture of varied pressures and possible futures, not one universal disappearance statistic.
