In a 2017 interview with Scroll.in’s Chandrima Pal, he summed up a lesson from 105 films: “Keep making mistakes, keep making flops and remember to be true to your subject.” His account traces how an early distribution gamble, a costly setback and a willingness to back different kinds of stories shaped the company’s approach to Bengali cinema.
How Soni says the company began
Scroll.in’s August 24, 2017 interview identifies Shrikant Mohta and his cousin Mahendra Soni as the founders of Shree Venkatesh Films in 1996. Soni recalls that they began by distributing films rather than producing them, and that one early decision was to take Mani Ratnam’s Bombay for distribution in Bengal.
He says people warned them that a dubbed film would not sell. They took the risk anyway, and Soni remembers Bombay becoming a major success for them. The account is his retrospective recollection, not an independently verified box-office history.
What the failure of Khamoshi taught him
The success did not make distribution predictable. Soni describes Khamoshi as a flop and says they lost what they had made on Bombay. In his telling, the contrast taught the partners how exposed a distributor could be when a film failed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That experience helps explain the title’s apparent contradiction: Soni’s advice is not to pursue failure for its own sake, but to accept mistakes and flops as part of the work while remaining faithful to a film’s subject.
Why they moved from distribution to Bengali production
Soni says demand for Bengali-language films beyond Kolkata helped convince the partners to move from distributing Hindi films to producing Bengali ones. He names Bhai Amar Bhai as their first Bengali film. His explanation links the shift to an audience he believed was being underserved, rather than to a claim that the market was easy or uniform.

A slate balancing commercial films and personal conviction
In the interview, Soni describes the company’s choices as a balance: commercial films that could reach audiences and projects the partners felt ought to be made. He credits filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh with encouraging them to make Chokher Bali, an example of the more personally meaningful work in his account.
This is not a claim that every film followed one formula. Soni’s point is that producers can pursue audience appeal while also making room for stories they believe matter.

Reaching audiences beyond Kolkata
Soni describes regional differences in audience taste and limited access to single-screen cinemas as practical challenges. He said the company was opening small multiplexes in towns including Purulia and Krishnanagar, and referred to an effort of “around 10” multiplexes. That number describes the initiative as he discussed it in 2017; it is not a current count of venues.
His remarks frame audience reach as more than a question of what film to produce. Where people can watch films, and how a title travels across cinema, television and streaming, also shape the prospects of a Bengali release. The interview provides Soni’s perspective, not a measured account of the whole market.

The lesson after 105 films
Asked for his single biggest learning after 105 films, Soni answered: “Keep making mistakes, keep making flops and remember to be true to your subject.” It is advice grounded in the risks he recalled—from the uneven returns of distribution to the challenge of backing work that may not fit a purely commercial calculation.
Pal’s interview also records Soni’s contemporary examples, including his claim that Posto had made “Rs three crores in two weeks” at that time. That is a dated statement from 2017, not a current box-office figure or independently verified benchmark. Likewise, his mention of a planned streaming release for Dhananjoy reflects the plans discussed then, not present-day availability.
