Its violence is difficult to read, but the story’s force lies not in a simple tale of triumph: it comes from the collision between Dopdi’s bodily vulnerability, the authority exercised over her, and the meanings gathered around her name. In Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s influential reading, the story also rewrites—without simply overturning—the epic memory of Draupadi.
What is Mahasweta Devi’s “Draupadi” about?
The story centers on Dopdi Mejhen, a woman hunted by security forces, and Senanayak, the officer involved in her capture. Its political world is one in which state power reaches into rural struggle and the lives of tribal communities. After Dopdi is sexually assaulted in custody, the story turns to her encounter with Senanayak. Rather than accept the expected script of shame and concealment, she confronts him.
That ending is often described as defiant, but it should not be reduced to an uncomplicated victory. The assault is neither undone nor made acceptable by what follows. The scene instead makes visible the power relations that have shaped the encounter and unsettles the officer’s expectation that he can dictate how Dopdi will appear and behave.
What is the story’s political context?
In her 1981 foreword, Spivak situates the story amid political conflict and repression around the Naxalite movement in West Bengal. She points to 1971 in discussing Senanayak’s career and uses the setting to consider law, political action, intellectuals, rural struggle, and tribal communities. This is Spivak’s framing of the story, not a comprehensive history of the movement. A later scholarly discussion also identifies Naxalbari and Operation Bakuli as contextual reference points (“From Dopdi to Draupadi: Reading Mahasweta Devi’s ‘Draupadi’”).

Devi herself resisted treating human lives as instruments of party politics. As Spivak quotes from Devi’s introduction to Agnigarbha: “Life is not mathematics and the human being is not made for the sake of politics. I want a change in the present social system and do not believe in mere party politics.” The remark, encountered here through Spivak’s quotation, helps frame the story’s political commitment without reducing its people to symbols.
Why does the protagonist have two names?
The protagonist is called Dopdi in the story, while “Draupadi” is the Sanskritic form that evokes the heroine of the Mahabharata. The difference is more than a spelling variation: it brings a vernacular, situated character into contact with an epic name and its cultural weight.

Spivak reads Devi’s story alongside the epic episode in which Draupadi is disrobed. In the modern story, there is no divine rescuer to reverse the violation. After the assault, Dopdi remains naked at her own insistence and confronts Senanayak. Spivak cautions against calling this a straightforward refutation of the epic: she describes Dopdi as both a palimpsest and a contradiction. The echo matters, but the story does not simply reproduce the earlier episode with a changed ending.
Who translated “Draupadi” into English?
Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak translated the story into English and wrote its foreword. She explains her interest in both central figures: “I translated this Bengali short story into English as much for the sake of its villain, Senanayak, as for its title character, Draupadi (or Dopdi).” Her foreword is part of the story’s influential English-language reception and offers one substantial interpretation, not the only possible reading.
