Magnum P.I. ended with a two-part finale that gives its characters hopeful forward paths while leaving some story possibilities open. Showrunner Eric Guggenheim said there was “enough closure” for the episode to work as a series ending, even though the finale also set up ideas that could have continued in a sixth season. That was narrative possibility, not a Season 6 order.
When did Magnum P.I. end?
The reboot concluded on January 3, 2024, with the two-part finale “Ashes to Ashes” and “The Big Squeeze.” “The Big Squeeze” is season 5, episode 20, and the series ran for 96 episodes across five seasons, according to TV Guide and Apple TV. The two-hour finale was scheduled for that date, TVLine reported.
What happened in the finale?
The ending offers hopeful personal developments without closing off every possible next chapter. Magnum and Higgins move toward the possibility of marriage without rushing into it. Rick proposes to Suzy, T.C. plans to expand Island Hoppers, and Kumu becomes Rick’s business partner after buying him out of La Mariana.
The central case also leaves consequences in its wake: a previous suspect uses a recording of Magnum and Higgins to blackmail them into investigating a murder. The personal resolutions provide a sense of forward motion, while that unresolved pressure could have supplied material for future episodes.

What did “enough closure” mean?
Before the finale aired, Guggenheim said: “So, while a couple of things are left unresolved, I do feel like there is enough closure that it works as a finale.” The statement appeared in an interview published October 22, 2023, before the last episodes were broadcast; the interview was syndicated by Filmibee and attributed to Collider: read the interview.
After the finale, Guggenheim explained that character closure mattered more to the creative team than tying up every loose end. In a TV Guide interview, he said, “Our number one priority was giving our characters some closure. That was more important than tying up every loose end.” He also described the show as optimistic and said the team wanted to end on a hopeful note. In that sense, the finale’s open threads are compatible with its role as an ending: the principal characters receive emotional direction, even if their stories could continue.

Was Magnum P.I. Season 6 planned?
Guggenheim said the finale was “clearly teeing up some stuff for a Season 6,” and that the writers had “no shortage of exciting ideas” for what might follow. But he had not settled on a defined endgame. He also said the episode had not originally been written as a series finale; after the show had not received a pickup, the team accounted for that possibility and aimed to make it work both as a season finale and as an ending to the series. Those comments describe creative plans and contingencies, not a commissioned sixth season. The pre-finale interview contains his remarks.
Could the series return?
In post-finale comments reported in January 2024, Guggenheim said a revival would depend on several conditions coming together: audience demand, cast availability and willingness, agreement between both studios, workable economics, and a distribution arrangement for the show’s 96-episode library. He said there had been no revival discussions at that time. TV Guide’s post-finale interview is the source for those qualifications.

Those statements establish a conditional possibility as of January 2024, not a current announcement. The finale’s setup alone is not evidence that the show has been renewed or that a revival is in development.
