There is no universal cheaper option. If you already own a suitable Mac mini, running a stream locally may cost mainly the electricity your setup uses. If you would need to buy one for a single continuous YouTube stream, compare the Mac mini’s purchase price, measured power use and any supporting costs with the exact cloud plan you would use. The entry plans available for comparison are not equivalent packages.
What you are comparing
A Mac mini runs streaming software locally; you control the computer and its encoding workflow, and it must remain powered and connected while streaming. A cloud 24/7 streaming service runs prerecorded video without requiring a dedicated computer at home. YouTube’s help materials describe encoder-based streaming and identify Gyre for continuous prerecorded-video streaming: YouTube encoder setup.
Compare like with like: the same period, number of streams and destinations, resolution, storage, playlist or scheduling needs, and other required features. A low entry price is not useful if the plan lacks something your channel needs.

The comparison explicitly warns: “These are starting plans, not identical packages. Storage, destinations and other features differ.” The figures are not a like-for-like verdict, and provider prices can change.

Calculate your cost over the same period
If you buy or already own a Mac mini
For a new purchase, include the device cost. For a device you already own, use a clearly stated ownership allocation if you want to account for its value; otherwise, compare ongoing incremental costs. In either case, include measured electricity use and any equipment, network or backup costs your setup actually requires.
Electricity cost = measured average wall power in watts Ă— operating hours Ă· 1,000 Ă— your marginal electricity price per kWh.

Measure the complete setup under your actual streaming workload, ideally over a representative period. Apple’s 4 W idle and 70 W maximum figures are reference points, not expected stream consumption. For scale only, mechanically applying those figures continuously for a 30-day month gives 2.88 kWh at 4 W or 50.4 kWh at 70 W. Those are arithmetic illustrations, not measured streaming results; multiply your measured monthly kWh by your own electricity rate.
If you use a cloud streaming plan
Multiply the exact plan price by the number of months, then add any required upgrades or add-ons. Check stream count, destinations, storage, resolution, scheduling and other plan limits before treating its price as comparable to local hardware.

For scale, 48 months at the listed $19/month Beamd Starter price totals $912 before taxes or price changes. That is close to the $899 U.S. M6 starting price, but it is not a break-even calculation: the Mac mini also uses electricity and may require supporting costs, while the cloud plan may include different capabilities. The Beamd figure is a provider-comparison entry price, not a guarantee of future pricing or a claim that the plan matches a local setup.
Which option is cheaper for your situation?
- You already own a suitable Mac mini: Local streaming may have lower incremental cash cost if its measured power draw and any necessary support costs are modest. Compare those costs with the cloud plan’s recurring fee and required features.
- You would buy a Mac mini only for this stream: Include the full purchase price over the period you expect to use it, plus electricity and necessary supporting costs. Compare that total with cloud fees for the same period and requirements.
- You need continuous prerecorded playback without a home computer running: A cloud service avoids making your local computer the stream host, but its price and plan limits determine whether it is a better-value fit.
- You need several destinations, streams, or particular storage and scheduling features: Verify those limits on both sides before comparing prices. The available entry-plan comparison says the listed packages differ.
The deciding variables are whether you already own appropriate hardware, your measured average wall power, local electricity rate, cloud plan and its limits, and how long you will stream. No cited comparison establishes one option as cheaper for every creator.

- Continuity: A local setup depends on the computer, power and network at its location; consider whether your use case requires backup power or connectivity. Do not assume a cloud plan has a particular uptime guarantee unless its terms state one.
- Workflow: A local encoder offers direct control over the computer-side workflow. A cloud service may suit a prerecorded playlist workflow; confirm its controls and limits rather than assuming every service works the same way.
