To stream a recorded lesson with subtitles on YouTube Live, add it to OBS as a VLC Video source and enable its subtitle track. That puts subtitles in the outgoing video picture, where every viewer sees them. It does not, by itself, send YouTube viewer-toggleable closed captions (CC); those require a separate caption-data workflow.

Choose the subtitle experience first

There are two different ways subtitles can reach viewers. Choose based on whether the text should always appear or viewers should be able to turn captions on and off.

Method What viewers see What it requires
Subtitles displayed in the OBS picture Text is part of the video image and appears for everyone. An OBS source that renders the lesson’s subtitle track, or subtitles rendered into the video before streaming.
YouTube live captions (CC) Captions can be switched on or off in the YouTube player. Caption data sent to YouTube, either embedded as EIA 608/CEA 708 or through supported software that sends caption data over HTTP.

OBS documents a VLC Video source with a subtitle-display setting. That documentation does not establish that the source sends caption data to YouTube, nor does it list every subtitle-file format it accepts. Test the specific file and OBS setup you intend to use. For YouTube’s separate live-caption requirements, see YouTube’s live caption requirements.

Prepare the recorded lesson and subtitle track

Use OBS’s VLC Video source

  1. Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says you need 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the lesson.
  3. Select the recorded lesson media, enable Subtitles Enabled, and select the intended Subtitle Track.
  4. Check the source in the OBS preview. Confirm the text appears, is legible at the intended output size, and stays synchronized with speech throughout the lesson.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the subtitle-track control, but does not promise compatibility with every file extension. If the track does not render correctly, make a copy of the lesson with subtitles rendered into the picture, or build a timed text overlay in the OBS scene. Treat either alternative as a workflow to validate with the actual file and OBS build before the event.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep the video readable

  • Review the output at the resolution viewers will receive, not only in the OBS canvas. Small text may be difficult to read on phones.
  • Check the beginning, several points through the lesson, and the ending for missing or mistimed text.
  • Make sure the subtitle placement does not cover slides, demonstrations, or other information learners need to see.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room, create or schedule an encoder-based live stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and use the key associated with the intended event.
  3. Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it. For the encoder, YouTube’s current guidance calls for CBR, up to 60 fps, and a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds). Choose a resolution and bitrate that suit both the lesson source and the available upload connection.
  4. Start the OBS stream and wait for the incoming video to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before going live to viewers.

As reference points, YouTube’s encoder settings page recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p/30 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees of a stable stream; the appropriate setting varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for the current table.

For the encoder setup and stream-key steps, see YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder.

Rehearse the viewer-facing stream

Before relying on the setup for a lesson, run an unlisted rehearsal. An OBS preview alone cannot confirm what YouTube viewers will receive.

  • Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview for the picture, sound, and visible subtitles.
  • Watch from the YouTube watch page on a computer and a mobile device. Check subtitle timing, legibility, and whether the entire lesson plays as intended.
  • If you need viewer-toggleable CC, verify that captions arrive through the separate caption workflow. Text visible in the OBS picture is not proof that YouTube CC is available.
  • Monitor audio and video during the rehearsal, and confirm that the stream ends as intended. YouTube recommends testing and checking the viewer-facing stream; see its live streaming tips.

When the YouTube event has ended, stop the encoder in OBS.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom What to check Practical fix
Subtitles do not appear in OBS Confirm that VLC is installed, its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), and the source has subtitles enabled with the intended track selected. Recheck the source settings. If the track still does not render, test a version with subtitles rendered into the picture or a timed overlay before the live event.
The subtitles appear, but are out of sync or hard to read Inspect the actual YouTube preview and watch page at the intended resolution, including later parts of the lesson. Correct the subtitle timing or presentation in the media/scene and repeat the rehearsal. Do not assume the OBS canvas alone reflects the viewer experience.
Viewers cannot turn the subtitles off Determine whether the text is burned into the picture or displayed by the OBS source. That is picture text, not YouTube CC. Configure a supported embedded-caption or HTTP caption-data workflow and test it separately.
YouTube does not receive the OBS stream Check that the event is set up for encoder streaming and that OBS has the matching stream URL and key. Correct the event/key pairing and verify the connection in Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.
The stream is unstable Compare the selected output settings with YouTube’s current guidance and the available upload capacity. Choose a suitable resolution and bitrate, use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, then rehearse again. Platform recommendations cannot guarantee a stable connection on a particular network.

Copyright and lesson access checks

Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream the lesson and all included material, such as music, video clips, images, and readings. A recording being available to you does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Also check that the event’s visibility and audience settings match your intended class. An unlisted rehearsal is useful for testing, but it is not a substitute for a rights check.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the lesson is a finished recording and you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos without a computer or home connection needing to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
