You can use a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM to run an encoder such as FFmpeg and send a prerecorded church service directly to YouTube Live. The VM hosts the encoding process; YouTube Studio creates the broadcast and supplies its stream URL and key. Google Cloud’s separate Live Stream API is not required for this direct-to-YouTube setup.
How the setup works
Google Cloud describes Compute Engine as “a computing and hosting service that lets you create and run virtual machines on Google infrastructure.” The VM is a remote computer for your encoder and media file; it does not create a YouTube event or issue a stream key. YouTube’s encoder guidance says to enter the event’s YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder.
The direct path is: prerecorded file on a VM → encoder such as FFmpeg → YouTube Live ingest. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a different managed ingest and transcoding service, documented with SRT and RTMP inputs and HLS/DASH outputs. Use that API only if your project needs its managed media pipeline; it is not a prerequisite for a YouTube stream.
Before you set up the VM
Check rights for everything in the recording
Confirm the church has the necessary rights for the service recording, including worship music, guest performances, sermon illustrations, and any third-party media. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the rights needed to exploit live and archived content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. A platform’s permission to stream does not grant rights to third-party works. Coverage depends on the specific license and jurisdiction; do not assume a church license covers online streaming or that an unlisted broadcast avoids enforcement.

Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and says live streamers must be at least 16. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event and set its title, description, audience details, and privacy before configuring the encoder. A scheduled broadcast of prerecorded material is distinct from uploading a video, creating a Premiere, or broadcasting a service live as it happens. Check YouTube’s current guidance and the event controls for the format you intend to use rather than assuming every prerecorded format is permitted in every circumstance.
Create the VM and install an encoder
-
In Google Cloud Console, create a Compute Engine VM in a region suitable for your operation. Choose the machine size based on the selected encoder, resolution, frame rate, and whether you will use CPU or available hardware encoding. There is no universal machine type or bitrate that can be specified without knowing the source and workload.
-
Put the service file on the VM’s disk or transfer it to the VM using a method appropriate for its size and your access controls. Confirm the file is complete and readable before the broadcast. A camera or capture card is not needed for a file already stored on the VM.
-
Connect to the Linux VM using the SSH access method documented for Compute Engine, then install an encoder such as FFmpeg using the package or build appropriate to the VM’s operating system. Check that the installed build supports the codecs you plan to use.

Keep the VM’s CPU capacity and network egress in mind. A command-line VM may not have an interactive desktop or hardware acceleration. Do not assume a GPU encoder is available; choose an encoder and settings supported by the actual instance and test them.

Create the YouTube event and protect its key
-
In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming controls and create or select the event for the service. Choose the event’s privacy and metadata, and confirm that its date and start time are correct if it is scheduled.
-
Open the event’s encoder or stream settings and copy the YouTube server URL and stream key. Use the current values shown for that specific event; do not substitute a Google Cloud Live Stream API input address.
-
Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: restrict access to the VM and account, and do not put the key in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or source control. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.

Configure the video and audio output
Follow the settings supported by the chosen event and the installed encoder. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options in applicable workflows; choose a codec the encoder and event can use.
-
Frame rate and keyframes: Match the source and intended output frame rate. Set keyframes at the recommended 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.

-
Bitrate: Use a constant bitrate within YouTube’s current recommendation for your selected resolution and frame rate. The suitable value depends on the output format and available VM CPU or hardware encoding capacity and network egress; test the actual stream rather than treating one value as universal.
-
Audio: YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. Its guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo audio or 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Use AAC or MP3 as supported by the workflow and verify the service’s mix and levels.

Transport: Prefer RTMPS where the event and encoder support it. Use the exact ingest URL shown by YouTube for that event.
Start the stream with an illustrative FFmpeg command
The command below shows the general shape of an FFmpeg-to-YouTube connection; it is an illustrative template, not a tested command. Replace the endpoint and key with the current values for your event, and adapt codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings to the source and YouTube’s current guidance. The exact endpoint syntax and compatibility depend on the event and encoder build.
ffmpeg -re -i service.mp4
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
Here, -re paces file input in real time, while -i service.mp4 selects the source file. The example uses software H.264 encoding, 30 frames per second, and a 60-frame GOP (a 2-second interval at 30 fps), with stereo AAC at 128 Kbps. It is not a universal recommendation for every file or event; match the values to the source, supported YouTube settings, and VM capacity. Do not paste a Live Stream API input URI into this command: Google Cloud’s documented FFmpeg examples for that API target its own service, not YouTube.

Preflight, go live, and end the broadcast
-
Start the encoder early enough for YouTube to receive the feed and show a preview in Live Control Room. Check the event is the correct one before starting.

Verify the full picture and actual audio, including the opening and ending of the file. Check the source file, expected duration, and stream health messages. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream.
-
When the preview and event are ready, use the event controls in Live Control Room to start or go live. Monitor stream health and YouTube messages while the service plays.
-
When the file finishes, stop the encoder and end the event through the YouTube Studio workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but check the event and resulting archive after ending rather than treating archiving as guaranteed in every circumstance.
For a church broadcast that must run unattended, rehearse for the expected duration or run a sufficiently long test. A short launch check cannot establish that the VM process and network connection will remain stable for an entire service.

Choose between direct YouTube ingest and Google Cloud Live Stream API
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| VM runs an encoder and streams directly to YouTube | The VM is mainly an unattended host for a prerecorded file that should reach YouTube Live. | Fewer media-pipeline services, but you manage the encoder process and YouTube connection. |
| Encoder sends to Google Cloud Live Stream API | The project needs Google Cloud’s managed ingest, transcoding, and HLS/DASH output workflow for downstream playback systems. | Adds a managed media service and architecture; it is not required for direct YouTube Live ingestion. |
Costs to estimate before choosing a VM
A reliable VM total depends on the selected machine type, region, run time, disk, and network transfer. Estimate those inputs using current Google Cloud pricing before scheduling a long broadcast; the information here does not establish a scenario-specific bill. Include the time needed for rehearsal and any period the VM remains running beyond the stream itself.
Common problems and fixes
-
YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm the event is the intended one, the encoder is running, and the current YouTube server URL and stream key were copied correctly. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update the encoder.
-
The event shows an unhealthy stream: Check the encoder output against YouTube’s current codec, bitrate, keyframe, and audio guidance. Confirm the VM has enough compute capacity for the chosen settings and that its network egress is continuous.
-
Video appears but audio is missing or wrong: Check the source file’s audio stream and the encoder’s audio mapping, codec, sample rate, and bitrate; listen to the YouTube preview before going live.

The broadcast starts late or the file ends early: Check that the correct file is readable on the VM, its duration is as expected, and the encoder process remains active for the complete playback. Start early enough to confirm the preview and avoid beginning the event before the feed is ready.
-
The command connects to the wrong Google service: Use the YouTube event’s ingest URL and key for direct output. A Google Cloud Live Stream API input URI belongs to that separate managed service.
-
The stream stops after the operator disconnects: Verify that the encoder process is still running on the VM and that the VM itself remains on. A remote SSH session closing and the VM stopping are separate issues; arrange process supervision and VM lifecycle intentionally, then test the behavior before relying on it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without maintaining an encoder process on your VM, StreamNeo is an alternative. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming of uploaded videos, not live camera feeds. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
