Life on a Hair Trigger: How Violence Shapes Perception—and How Minds Can Learn Anew

Violence can train a person to expect danger, read ambiguous moments as threats and see few safe ways to respond. In Megan Kang’s essay “Life on a hair trigger,” that vigilance is presented not as irrationality, but as an adaptation to real danger—one that can also create risk in a different moment. Kang’s account of READI Chicago shows how people may practise other responses when they have time, safety and sustained support.

What does “life on a hair trigger” mean?

The phrase describes a state in which the possibility of danger feels close enough to shape ordinary encounters. In her 25 December 2021 Aeon essay, “Life on a hair trigger,” Megan Kang writes about men connected to READI Chicago who often anticipated danger and responded with habits formed amid violence.

That response is not simply a failure to think clearly. If danger has been a recurring part of life, staying alert and acting quickly can be an adaptation. The difficulty is that a response learned in dangerous circumstances may be triggered by an ambiguous interaction, even when the immediate situation is different. As Kang puts it, “The vigilance that keeps someone alive at one point can generate danger at another.”

How can past violence shape a present reaction?

Kang’s interviews describe three connected patterns. A person may interpret an unclear interaction as a threat, feel that there are few possible responses, and treat a violent act as proof of a fixed identity. Together, these patterns can narrow the space between what happens and what someone does next.

Ambiguity can look like danger

A bump, a name or a look may be hard to interpret. When someone has learned to anticipate harm, the mind may settle quickly on the threatening explanation. That interpretation can feel compelling because it draws on experience, not because the person is inventing danger.

A confrontation can seem to leave no choices

If the moment is read as a threat, the available responses may seem limited to fighting back or appearing vulnerable. Kang describes practice that helps participants slow down and consider more than one response—such as pausing, breathing, walking away or asking whether an action was intentional.

An action can become an identity

Kang relates the tendency to treat a violent action as evidence of an unchangeable character to the fundamental attribution error: interpreting behaviour as a fixed trait while overlooking circumstances. Separating “what I did” from “who I am” does not excuse harm. It makes room to recognise an action, take responsibility and consider what could be different next time.

What questions help create a pause?

In the sessions Kang describes, participants practised examining the first interpretation rather than treating it as the only one. They learned to notice physical signals—such as a racing pulse or tightened fists—and to ask what was happening inside before acting.

A useful question from the essay is: “What was going through your mind when that happened?” It turns attention to the link between an event, its interpretation and the response. In a tense moment, related questions might include:

  • What do I know happened, and what am I assuming about why it happened?
  • What is my body telling me right now?
  • What are two or more ways I could respond?
  • Could I pause, breathe, walk away or ask what the other person intended?

These are practice tools, not a guarantee of safety. They do not mean ignoring a real threat or expecting someone to manage danger through willpower alone.

How did READI Chicago approach change?

Kang describes READI—the Rapid Employment and Development Initiative—as a community violence intervention partnership involving Heartland Alliance, the University of Chicago and seven nonprofit organisations on Chicago’s South and West sides. The men in her interview group were current or former participants. The programme combined paid part-time work with group cognitive behavioural intervention and outreach support.

Work, group sessions and outreach

In Kang’s account, the programme lasted 18 months. Participants attended group sessions three to five mornings a week, which they called “CAD” (Control-Alt-Delete). Outreach workers helped with crises involving housing, legal matters, safety or substance use. The design placed skills practice alongside practical support, rather than treating a different response as a matter of private resolve.

Rehearsing another response

Participants practised questioning a first reading of an encounter, noticing bodily signals, identifying more than one possible response and distinguishing an action from a permanent identity. The point was not that a single pause resolves the pressures of violence. It was that repeated practice with other people, in conditions of safety and support, can make alternatives more available.

What other programmes does Kang discuss?

Kang situates READI among examples that differ in setting and audience. The essay is not a current directory of services, and its examples should not be read as a ranking.

Example Setting and approach described by Kang Duration, frequency or reported outcome in the essay
READI Chicago Adult community participants; paid work, group cognitive behavioural sessions and outreach support. 18 months; group sessions three to five mornings a week. Kang reports a trial estimate of 65 per cent fewer arrests for shootings and homicides among participants than among comparable men not offered READI. The estimate is reported in her 2021 essay; the underlying trial publication was not independently reviewed for this article.
Becoming a Man School-based programme run by Youth Guidance for high-school-age participants. Kang reports a nearly half reduction in violent-crime arrests among high-school-age participants. The original evaluation was not independently reviewed for this article.
Boxing Out Negativity North Lawndale programme run by Derek Brown, combining boxing with breathing and emotional-awareness practice. Duration, frequency and outcome figures are not stated in Kang’s essay.
Situational Decision-Making training Training for Chicago police officers; Kang also mentions advocates using related techniques. Duration, frequency and outcome figures are not stated in Kang’s essay.

What do the figures in the essay show—and not show?

Kang says her research team interviewed 99 men connected to READI. She reports that 98 per cent had been arrested, averaging more than 17 arrests each, and that 35 per cent had been shot by the time they entered the programme. These figures describe the interview group as reported in the 2021 essay; they are not current population statistics.

She also reports that 70 per cent described READI primarily as an opportunity for personal growth rather than just a job. This is participants’ reported view, not an independent measure of programme effectiveness. The arrest-reduction estimates in the essay likewise should be understood as figures Kang reports, rather than as evaluations independently assessed here. Interviews can illuminate how people understand their experience; they do not by themselves establish that a programme caused a change.

Can learned reactions change?

Kang’s argument is that learned patterns can change, but not through a slogan to “think positively.” A person may need repeated opportunities to notice a threat-oriented interpretation, examine what is happening in the body and rehearse a different response. That work is more realistic when practical crises are also met with support.

One participant, identified by the pseudonym Kobe, described a shift simply: “I think before I act.” Another, Larry, said, “Far as articulating the things that’s going on inside of my body and how I’m feeling, that’s what I’m really learning.” Kang’s account does not suggest that people facing real danger should abandon vigilance; it asks whether a response learned in one set of circumstances can be distinguished from what a present moment requires.

The capacity to respond differently may be ordinary. The conditions needed to practise it—safety, time, other people and skilled support—are not always available. That distinction is central to the essay’s view of change: possibility matters, but it is not a substitute for the support that makes practice possible.
