Argentine prosecutors said toxicology testing found alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in Liam Payne’s system. A later official account named sertraline and cocaine-related compounds. The published findings do not identify a specific “hallucination-triggering” drug or establish that a drug caused Payne’s fatal fall.
What did toxicology testing find?
In a November 7, 2024 announcement, Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 said completed studies found traces of alcohol, cocaine and a prescription antidepressant in the moments before Payne’s death and during at least the preceding 72 hours. A later account specified alcohol, cocaine, cocaine metabolites, cocaethylene and sertraline.
These are reported toxicology findings, not a determination that a particular substance caused Payne to fall. The official accounts cited here do not name the specific drug implied by the “strong drugs that can trigger hallucinations” wording in the headline.
What caused Payne’s death?
Payne, 31, died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a balcony at the Casa Sur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires. Prosecutors said the autopsy attributed his death to multiple trauma and internal and external hemorrhage resulting from the fall. That cause-of-death finding does not, by itself, establish why he fell or connect the fall to a named substance.

What did investigators examine?
Prosecutors described an investigation that included dozens of testimonies from hotel staff, family and associates, medical professionals, biochemists and psychiatrists. Investigators also reviewed more than 800 hours of hotel and public-street security footage, extracted phone data and completed forensic and laboratory work.
What is the legal status of the case?
The case has moved through several procedural stages, and the cited prosecutor’s updates do not establish a final trial date, verdict or conviction.

- November 2024: Prosecutors announced formal charges against three people and described the investigation and toxicology findings.
- Initial judicial processing: A judge processed three accused over alleged culpable homicide and two over alleged drug supply. This was a procedural decision, not a final verdict. The prosecutor’s account quoted Judge Laura Graciela Bruniard as saying that taking Payne in his condition to room 310 created a legally disapproved risk to his life; the account also translated her view that he should have been left somewhere safe and accompanied until a doctor arrived.
- Appeal: According to the prosecutor’s publication, an appeals chamber confirmed processing and pretrial detention for two people accused of drug supply, while dismissing the other three at that stage.
- Later trial referral: Prosecutors sought an oral trial for two alleged paid cocaine suppliers. The assigned national criminal oral tribunal declared itself incompetent and referred the matter to the City of Buenos Aires judiciary. The cited update does not report what followed in that venue.
