Disney’s live-action reimagining of Lilo & Stitch opened in US theaters on May 23, 2025. The studio’s first-look teaser, published November 25, 2024, introduced the film and confirmed that US date; release dates differed in other countries.
What Disney’s first look revealed
Disney presented the film as a live-action reimagining of its 2002 animated classic. Its official teaser described the story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and a fugitive alien who help mend her broken family. The teaser was published on November 25, 2024, and announced the US theatrical date.
The phrase “first look” refers here to Disney’s promotional reveal and teaser materials. It should not be taken to mean that the November 2024 teaser was the film’s only earlier image or promotional appearance.
Release dates by territory
The release date was not the same worldwide. Disney’s official materials listed different theatrical openings for the US, UK, and Japan:

Cast and director
Dean Fleischer Camp directed the film. Disney’s announced cast included Maia Kealoha, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis. Disney’s D23 cast and characters guide provides additional cast context.
Adapting the animated story
The filmmakers faced the task of translating the animated story into live action while honoring the cultural nuances and values intrinsic to it, according to The Walt Disney Company’s May 21, 2025 feature on the filmmakers. That context is central to the adaptation: the story’s family relationships and Hawaiian setting are part of what the new version had to carry across formats.
