Kodi problems have different causes: a startup crash, a failed add-on, missing files, buffering, and no sound call for different fixes. Start by identifying what fails, then use the least destructive test that can narrow it down. Do not choose “Clear data,” “Clear storage,” or delete Kodi’s profile until you have backed up anything you want to keep.
These steps apply to the official Kodi app. Menu labels and file paths can differ by skin, operating system, device, and installation method.
First, identify the symptom
Which description fits best?
- Kodi will not launch, stays on the splash screen, or crashes as it opens.
- Kodi opens, but menus are slow, frozen, or blank.
- One add-on will not open, install, or update.
- Online video buffers, freezes, or stops, while local files may work.
- Kodi cannot find files, a library is incomplete, or a network share is unavailable.
- Video plays with a black screen, no sound, or the wrong subtitles.
- A remote control stopped responding.
Note whether the fault affects one file, one add-on, all online content, or Kodi itself. That distinction is usually more useful than reinstalling immediately.
Try these low-risk checks first
- Close Kodi fully and reopen it. Returning to the device’s home screen may leave Kodi running in the background.
- Restart the device. Reboot the TV box, computer, or other host, not just Kodi.
- Check available storage. Free space if the device is nearly full; low storage can interfere with updates, artwork, and normal operation.
- Test a small local video. If it plays but online video does not, focus on the network, remote source, or add-on rather than general playback.
- Compare sources. Try another file or a legitimate add-on you already use. If just one source fails, the fault may be with that source or its service.
- Check the Kodi version. Open Settings → System information, or the System information item in the main system menu. Labels vary. Official Kodi pages identified 21.3 “Omega” as stable on August 16, 2026; check Kodi’s download page for the current release and your platform’s availability before updating. Rollouts can differ by platform and store.
- Update only through an official channel. Use the official download page or your platform’s legitimate app store. Kodi is media-center software and does not include films, channels, or other media content. See Kodi’s download information.
If Kodi will not start or keeps crashing
Remove a recent change
A recently installed or updated skin, add-on, repository, or script may be preventing Kodi from loading. If Kodi stays open long enough, go to Settings → Add-ons → My add-ons, find the recent item, then disable or uninstall it and restart Kodi. The exact route can vary with the skin. If you cannot reach the menus, move to the clean-profile test below.

Test Kodi with a clean profile
Kodi’s settings, libraries, add-ons, artwork, and databases live in its data folder. Renaming that folder lets Kodi create a fresh profile without immediately destroying the old one. Close Kodi completely, make a backup, then rename the existing folder and start Kodi again. If the clean profile works, the problem is likely in the old profile; restore settings selectively rather than copying everything back at once. Kodi’s troubleshooting guide recommends isolating user data and add-ons as part of diagnosis.
On Windows, a separate portable installation can also test Kodi without disturbing the usual profile. Consult the data-folder guide before changing files, especially on a TV device where profile access may be restricted.
Do not confuse uninstalling with resetting
Uninstalling the Kodi application may leave its data folder behind; deleting that folder is what removes the retained profile, libraries, skins, and add-ons. The Windows installation guide explains this distinction. Back up first, and use a renamed folder for a reversible test.
If Kodi is slow, frozen, or unresponsive
Possible causes include a heavy or broken skin, an unavailable network source, an add-on repeatedly contacting a failed service, a large or damaged library database, limited device resources, or an artwork cache that has grown over time.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Switch temporarily to Kodi’s default skin.
- Disable recently installed or nonessential add-ons.
- Remove or disconnect network sources that are no longer available.
- Restart Kodi and see whether the slowdown returns.
- Enable debug logging and look for repeated errors, as described below.
- Compare with a clean profile if the cause remains unclear.
Avoid deleting database files at random. Depending on the file and setup, that can remove library entries, watched status, or metadata. Back up the profile before database repair or reset steps.
If an add-on is not working
If Kodi’s menus, local playback, and other add-ons work, suspect the affected add-on or its external service before blaming Kodi. A service change or outage can break an add-on even when Kodi itself is healthy.
- Test a local file or another source to confirm Kodi playback works.
- Update Kodi and the add-on through their legitimate channels.
- Disable and re-enable the add-on. If it uses an account, sign out and back in or reauthorize the linked service when appropriate.
- Check the add-on maintainer’s documentation or support channel for service changes.
- Use the debug log to see whether Kodi reports an add-on-specific error.
Kodi is separate from the content and services that add-ons access. Official Kodi support may not assist with banned add-ons; see Kodi’s log and support information. Avoid unofficial builds or repositories as a troubleshooting shortcut: they can introduce unrelated faults and may fall outside official support.
If video buffers, freezes, or stops
Buffering is not automatically a Kodi-cache problem. Kodi’s documentation explains that a “cache full” message can mean data is arriving too slowly for playback to stay ahead; changing a buffer cannot make a remote server faster. See Kodi’s cache explanation.

- Multiple Connection Options: Bluetooth 5.4 technology and the TV box’s two built-in USB ports let you easily connect your phone, speakers, keyboard, and other peripherals
- Try the same video later and test another legitimate source.
- Play a local file. If that works, investigate the network path, source, or add-on.
- Check Wi-Fi signal and congestion; where practical, compare with Ethernet. Restart the router and device.
- Consider whether the video’s bitrate or resolution exceeds what the connection or device can handle, and whether the remote server is slow.
- Check device storage and temperature, and whether the device can decode the video smoothly.
- If an add-on has its own cache or service, consult its documentation rather than assuming Kodi’s playback cache controls it.
In Kodi 21, cache controls are in the graphical settings pages. The older approach of adding cache tags to advancedsettings.xml is deprecated for these settings. “Zero cache” is not a universal fix and can be unsuitable on devices with limited internal storage. Review Kodi’s caching settings documentation before changing anything; cache adjustments cannot overcome a slow server.
If local files or network shares are missing
First determine whether Kodi cannot see a local USB or internal drive, a removable drive whose path changed, or a network location such as SMB, NFS, or UPnP. A share working on a computer does not guarantee the TV device has the same credentials, permissions, or protocol support.
- Check that the drive or share is visible outside Kodi and that the host computer is awake.
- Confirm the path, hostname or IP address, credentials, and permissions. The address may have changed.
- Use an account with access only to the files Kodi needs, not unrelated sensitive files.
- Record the existing path and credentials before removing and re-adding a source.
- If Kodi can access the source but library items are missing, check the file names and folders, then rescan the library.
Kodi stores source configuration in its profile. Its userdata guide and data-folder guide describe where relevant settings are kept.
If video will not play or the screen is black
One file fails
Check that the file is intact and that Kodi has permission to read it. Confirm the path and try another file. A damaged file, unsupported codec or container, or source-specific fault is more likely when only one item fails.

One format or group of files fails
Suspect a codec or hardware-decoding incompatibility, output configuration, or device driver or firmware issue. Change only one playback setting at a time, record its original value, and restore it if the test does not help.
Everything fails
If even an ordinary local video fails, test a clean profile and check the debug log for graphics, renderer, or decoder errors. The right hardware-acceleration setting depends on the operating system, graphics hardware, driver, codec, display, and file. Temporarily changing acceleration can be a diagnostic test, not a universal solution. Kodi’s supported-hardware information notes that the interface requires graphics hardware acceleration and that hardware video decoding can be necessary for smooth playback on low-performance CPUs.
If audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync
- Check the volume and mute setting on the TV, receiver, soundbar, or computer.
- Confirm Kodi and the operating system are using the intended output device.
- Test stereo output first. Temporarily disabling passthrough can help determine whether the receiver or Kodi’s output configuration is involved.
- Check whether the fault affects every file or only particular audio formats.
- Restart HDMI-connected equipment and check whether an operating-system audio-driver change coincided with the problem.
- Verify that the television or receiver supports the formats selected for passthrough before enabling them again.
If subtitles, artwork, or library metadata are missing
Metadata can fail because of incorrect naming, permissions, a scraper or provider outage, a change in an add-on, or provider-side limitations. Kodi’s FAQ explains that libraries depend on metadata providers and that results are not guaranteed to be perfect.
- Check file and folder names, then try refreshing one item manually.
- Check the relevant scraper or subtitle add-on and its documentation.
- Do not delete the entire library as a first step. Back up custom NFO files, playlists, and artwork before rebuilding or rescanning.
Clear cache, clear data, and add-on data are different
On Android, “Clear cache” is not the same as “Clear data” or “Clear storage.” The usual route is Settings → Apps → Kodi → Storage & cache → Clear cache, though wording differs by Android version and manufacturer. Kodi’s cache documentation says Android’s application cache normally contains default or temporary files and should not remove Kodi’s settings, add-ons, or library information. Clearing it is not routinely necessary and is not a general fix for buffering.

Clear storage, Clear data, or uninstalling can erase Kodi’s profile and settings. Back up before using any of these options. Add-on data is separate again: files under userdata/addon_data may include preferences, login state, or locally stored information. Removing an add-on’s data can reset it. See Kodi’s userdata documentation.
Back up Kodi before resetting it
Close Kodi before copying its profile. If possible, back up the whole data folder; at minimum, preserve the userdata folder and any databases, playlists, NFO files, artwork, and add-on settings you value. Paths below are typical and can vary by packaging, device, and Kodi fork.
| Platform or installation | Typical Kodi data location |
|---|---|
| Android | Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files/.kodi/ |
| Linux | ~/.kodi/ |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Kodi/ |
| LibreELEC | /storage/.kodi/ |
| Windows desktop installer | %APPDATA%Kodi |
| Windows Microsoft Store | %LOCALAPPDATA%PackagesXBMCFoundation.Kodi_4n2hpmxwrvr6pLocalCacheRoamingKodi |
Check Kodi’s data-folder page and userdata page for platform-specific details. On Android, access restrictions may make the folder difficult to reach.
Reinstall only after isolating the cause
A reinstall can replace damaged application files, but it will not repair an unavailable server, broken add-on service, network permissions, or hardware limitation. Before reinstalling, restart, update, disable the suspected add-on or skin, test a clean profile, inspect the log, and back up data.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Export or copy the library and settings you want to keep.
- Close Kodi completely.
- Uninstall the application.
- Rename or remove the old data folder only if you intend to reset the profile; keeping a renamed backup makes recovery easier.
- Install the current stable release from the official Kodi source or legitimate platform store.
- Start with the default profile and test a local file.
- Add sources and add-ons gradually, then restore backed-up data selectively.
Create a debug log if the ordinary fixes fail
A debug log helps distinguish add-on, permission, network, database, decoder, renderer, and audio-output problems. When Kodi is usable, open Settings → System settings → Logging, enable debug logging, then reproduce the fault. Menu names can vary. Follow Kodi’s easy logging guide for retrieval and sharing.
Common log locations include:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%Kodikodi.log - macOS:
/Users/<username>/Library/Logs/kodi.log - Linux:
$HOME/.kodi/temp/kodi.log - LibreELEC:
/storage/.kodi/temp/kodi.log - Android: commonly
/sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files/.kodi/temp/kodi.log; access and path can vary. - Kodi’s special path:
special://logpath
Use the advanced log guide if you need help finding the file. Look for the first relevant error after reproducing the issue, a specific add-on ID, repeated database errors, permission denials, decoder or renderer messages, audio-output errors, or network, DNS, SMB, and authentication failures. An “ERROR” line is not automatically the root cause, and a long log should not be pasted wholesale into a public comment.
