Kesari Chapter 2 turns C. Sankaran Nair’s fight over the Jallianwala Bagh massacre into a heightened courtroom drama. It is a feature film, not a documentary: its historical subject is real, but its dramatic presentation should not be mistaken for an independently verified account of every legal or historical detail.
What is Kesari Chapter 2 about?
Directed and written by Karan Singh Tyagi, the 2025 Hindi-language film stars Akshay Kumar as C. Sankaran Nair, Ananya Panday as Dilreet Gill, and R. Madhavan as Neville McKinley. It runs 133 minutes and premiered on 18 April 2025, according to the Indonesian Film Censorship Institution, which classifies it locally for audiences aged 17 and older. That age classification applies to Indonesia, not automatically to other countries.
The story is built around the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 13 April 1919 and Nair’s effort to expose the violence in court. The Indonesian regulator’s synopsis describes unarmed people gathered for Baisakhi and protesting the Rowlatt Act before British troops under General Reginald Dyer opened fire, and notes that Michael O’Dwyer publicly defended the atrocity. This is the regulator’s synopsis of the film’s historical context, not a substitute for dedicated historical scholarship.
Is Kesari Chapter 2 based on a true story?
It is based on real people and a real historical atrocity, but it is a dramatized feature rather than a documentary. The film’s identified source is Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat’s book The Case That Shook The Empire, as listed by the Indonesian regulator and Fandango. That connection gives the film a historical foundation; it does not establish that every courtroom exchange, character choice, or sequence is documented fact.

For viewers who want a book-length account connected to the film, the Palats’ The Case That Shook The Empire is the natural next read. Check the edition and current availability in your market before buying.
Why does the film feel over the top?
The film presents a grave historical subject through a heightened courtroom-drama frame. That approach puts emphasis on confrontation, persuasive rhetoric, and character conflict rather than the restrained explanatory style viewers may expect from a documentary. Its scale and performances may suit viewers looking for an emotionally forceful period drama; viewers seeking a careful, source-led reconstruction should treat the film as an interpretation, not as their sole account of the massacre or Nair’s legal fight.
Rank #2
There is an important distinction between dramatic intensity and historical substantiation. The available film records establish the premise and credits, but do not independently audit its legal or historical details scene by scene. The film can introduce the subject and prompt further reading; it cannot, on this evidence, settle disputes about what happened in court or how each event is represented.
What do critics and audiences think?
Rotten Tomatoes showed a 35% Tomatometer from 17 critic reviews and a 97% Popcornmeter from more than 50 verified ratings when accessed on 8 October 2026. These are separate platform aggregates from different groups, not a shared verdict or a study of audience opinion. The large gap is a reason to look at the reviews themselves rather than treating either score as universal agreement.

Critics also differed in emphasis. Shubhra Gupta’s Indian Express review described the film as a polished prestige picture that follows expected beats, while other reviews listed by Rotten Tomatoes criticized its free fictionalization and treatment of misinformation. Apple TV’s title page displayed a 35% Tomatometer and an average score of 6.1 from 17 reviews when accessed; platform figures can change over time.
