Justin Bieber became tearful while talking about Billie Eilish in a 2020 Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe. He said he wanted to let her find her own way, while being there if she needed support. The moment came as Bieber reflected on the pressures of becoming famous young—not as evidence of a private relationship beyond what he said publicly.
Which interview was the clip from?
The moment appeared in Justin Bieber’s interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, published on February 15, 2020. The conversation accompanied the release of Changes, which Apple Music described as Bieber’s first album since Purpose (2015). Watch the official Apple Music clip or see Apple Music’s listing for The Changes Interview.
What did Bieber say about protecting Eilish?
Bieber spoke about Eilish becoming famous at a young age and said he wanted to support her without intruding. Elle transcribed him as saying: “Let her do her thing and if she ever needs me, I’m gonna be here for her. But yeah, just protecting the moment because people take for granted encounters.” Elle reported that he began to cry as he spoke. Elle’s account is a secondary outlet’s transcription; the official clip is the primary source.
Why was he emotional?
His comments connected his concern for Eilish with his own experience of entering the music business young. Elle reported that Bieber signed his first music deal at age 14. That context helps explain why he spoke about the pressures surrounding a young artist, but it does not mean the two artists had identical experiences.
