John Mellencamp’s January 2026 description of daughter Teddi Mellencamp as “suffering” prompted concern that her cancer had returned. Teddi later said she believed he was referring to how she was doing mentally. In her January clarification, she said there was still no trace of cancer, but that she remained considered Stage 4 and was continuing immunotherapy.
What John Mellencamp said in January
During a TODAY interview reported by Bravo on January 16, 2026, John said he had urged Teddi to move back to Indiana. When host Al Roker asked how she was doing, John replied, “[She’s] suffering,” then added, “To be quite honest.” He also spoke about the burden of her treatment and cancer journey. Bravo reported on the interview and remarks.
The comment led some people to wonder whether Teddi’s cancer had returned. It was John’s description of his daughter’s situation, not a medical update from Teddi or a diagnosis.
How Teddi explained the remark
On a January 2026 episode of Two Ts in a Pod, Teddi said she thought her father meant her mental state rather than her physical cancer status. “You know, I think when he said the word ‘suffering,’ he meant like how I’m mentally doing versus how I’m physically doing,” she said. Bravo reported her clarification on January 30, 2026; E! News also reported her explanation.

What Teddi said about her cancer and treatment
In the same January clarification, Teddi said: “There’s still no trace of cancer. But I’m still considered Stage 4, and I’m still in immunotherapy.” The distinction matters: her statement that there was no trace of cancer did not mean she had stopped treatment or said she was in remission.

In a September 9, 2026 update reported by Bravo, Teddi said she was “cancer-free for right now,” but was not allowed to say she was “in remission.” She said, “I have 10 more months of immunotherapy,” and that the treatment seemed to be working. The ten-month figure was her individual update at that time, not a general treatment timeline. Bravo reported the September update.
