A revenge story can be compelling because it makes the goal unmistakable—or because it shows that reaching it may not bring peace. The titles below range from crime drama and historical action to fantasy and science fiction. Some keep revenge at the center; others use it as one stage in a larger story.
The order follows WhatNerd’s June 21, 2023 ranking rather than claiming a universal verdict. A different method produces a different list: Ranker says its ranking is dynamically based on voter participation. Its page, updated July 1, 2025, reported 2.2K voters and 6.3K votes—participation figures, not a representative survey or a measure of quality. Ranker’s revenge-anime list includes alternatives such as Hell Girl, Black Butler, and Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo.

1. Berserk (2016)
Berserk (2016) is a later adaptation, distinct from the 1990s series that shares its title. WhatNerd frames Guts’ pursuit of revenge against Griffith and the God Hand as the story’s driving force. 4. Seraph of the End (2015)

10. Vinland Saga (2019)
Vinland Saga is a strong pick if you want to see revenge change meaning. In the initial arc, Thorfinn pursues Askeladd, the man responsible for his father’s death. The second season moves in a different thematic direction, making the full series less a sustained revenge fantasy than a story about what can follow one. WhatNerd lists 48 episodes across two seasons.
