The wider Survivor context—and its limits
Race-related criticism of Survivor predates the Anglim story, but it should not be conflated with accusations against him. In 2019, Black contestant Julia Carter wrote that other contestants had used the n-word around her while quoting a film and a television show; KQED/NPR reported that she said the incidents were not shown on air. The report did not identify those contestants.
On July 1, 2020, KQED/NPR covered Black alumni’s calls for changes to contestant portrayal, hiring, and enforcement of a zero-tolerance policy for racist acts. It reported that CBS condemned racism and said it was committed to inclusive and safe production environments. The same report said four of the first 40 season winners were Black and that CBS put BIPOC contestants at about 30% across the preceding 10 seasons. Those are historical figures reported in 2020, not current franchise totals or evidence about Anglim.
