The Witcher Season 4 has a split reception: Rotten Tomatoes recorded 61% from 28 critic reviews but only 19% from more than 2,500 audience ratings in a snapshot accessed in 2026. Metacritic, using a different scoring system, listed a 59 Metascore from 15 critic reviews and classified it as “Mixed or Average.” Those figures do not make the backlash universal, and they cannot tell us which complaint is most common. Reviews point instead to several possible sources of frustration: Liam Hemsworth’s arrival as Geralt, a crowded story, difficult re-entry after the wait, uneven character arcs, delayed payoff, and expectations tied to Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.
What do the reviews and audience ratings say?
The clearest sign of a critic-audience divide is on Rotten Tomatoes: its Season 4 page showed a 61% Tomatometer from 28 critic reviews and a 19% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 ratings in a snapshot accessed in 2026. The Tomatometer is the share of positive critic reviews, not an average score; both platform scores and counts can change. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 4 page also includes individual audience comments, but those comments illustrate reactions rather than measure how common they are.

Metacritic listed a 59 Metascore based on 15 critic reviews, with 33% positive and 67% mixed; its label was “Mixed or Average.” A Metascore is not directly comparable to Rotten Tomatoes’ percentage. Metacritic’s Season 4 page offers a separate view of critical reception.
Together, the snapshots support describing the response as mixed among critics and notably poor among the audience ratings counted on Rotten Tomatoes—not as universal rejection. They do not identify a single cause or establish a ranked list of fan complaints.

Why has Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt become a focus?
Season 4 brings Liam Hemsworth into the role of Geralt of Rivia after Henry Cavill played the character in the first three seasons. Netflix announced that Hemsworth would play Geralt for the series’ final two seasons. That makes the change hard to separate from the season’s reception: viewers already attached to Cavill may compare the performances before weighing the new season on its own.
Critics have not agreed on whether Hemsworth works in the role. Decider, quoted in Metacritic’s review index, said he “fills the boots of Geralt of Rivia just fine” and praised the action and humor. RogerEbert.com’s Clint Worthington, in the same index, said the new star struggles to step out of his predecessor’s “hulking shadow.” The Telegraph called Cavill the definitive Witcher while describing Hemsworth’s performance as suited to the show’s sillier register.
That disagreement makes the recast a plausible source of disappointment, not proof that Hemsworth alone caused the ratings. The reviews also raise concerns about story density and momentum.

Does the plot have too many moving parts?
Some critics describe a season trying to handle too many plotlines at once. The result, in their view, is not simply a large-scale fantasy story but one that can be hard to follow: episode-to-episode connections may feel weak, and the political relationships can be difficult to track without looking up extra context. RogerEbert.com’s review, indexed by Metacritic, describes the story as spinning “an overwhelming number of plates.”

This is a complaint about clarity and connection, not necessarily about the ambition of the story itself. A dense plot can create scope, but it asks viewers to keep track of shifting alliances, characters, and stakes. When the links between episodes do not feel strong enough, that density can register as confusion rather than complexity.
Why can it be hard to return to the story?
Season 4 arrived on October 30, 2025, after a long gap between seasons. TechRadar’s review that day argued that the series is complex to follow even under normal circumstances and that the intervening time makes the problem worse. It criticized the first four episodes for not doing enough to help viewers re-enter the drama.

That is one reviewer’s explanation, not evidence that all returning viewers struggled. But it points to a specific challenge: when a story depends on accumulated plot and political context, time away can make a new season’s opening feel like a continuation without a clear route back in.
How does the split between Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri affect momentum?
At the start of the season, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri are separated and following different paths, according to Netflix Tudum’s cast guide. Geralt also gathers companions as he tries to reach Ciri. The structure gives each character space, but it divides the season’s attention among parallel journeys.

Paste praised Yennefer’s largely invented arc as “fantastic,” while IGN called Ciri’s portions the weakest. Those judgments differ, but together they suggest that the separated strands do not land equally for every critic. If one journey feels less compelling, cutting away to another can interrupt momentum rather than build suspense.

Does Season 4 feel more like setup than payoff?
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says the season dutifully sets up the series’ endgame without enough fun along the way. A /Film review also found familiar stakes dull. That reaction is tied to where the season sits in the larger story: Netflix has said a fifth and final season will conclude it.
For viewers looking for a satisfying turn or resolution within Season 4 itself, a season that prepares the final stretch may feel short on immediate payoff. That is a response to the installment’s role in an ongoing story; it does not mean the season was released as unfinished production.

Expectations about the novels are relevant because Netflix says Seasons 4 and 5 together cover three remaining Andrzej Sapkowski books: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said Netflix was “thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion,” in Netflix Tudum’s announcement about Hemsworth and the final seasons.

That official framing makes adaptation expectations part of the conversation, but it does not establish that a specific change from the books caused Season 4’s reception—or that fidelity concerns matter more than casting, pacing, or clarity. The available review evidence here does not support a scene-by-scene claim about what the season changed. Viewers who want to compare the source material can start with the three named novels, keeping in mind that Netflix says the two seasons cover them collectively rather than Season 4 alone.
Why the backlash is not the whole story
There are positive reactions alongside the complaints. Decider praised Hemsworth’s performance, action sequences, and humor, while Paste singled out Yennefer’s arc. That contrast matters: the season can work for viewers who enjoy its action, comic touches, or particular character strands even as other viewers find the plotting crowded or the overall payoff delayed.
The most careful explanation is therefore cumulative rather than singular. A prominent recast, a complex story that can be hard to resume, unevenly received parallel arcs, and a season positioned before the finale all offer reasons some viewers and critics may be dissatisfied. The ratings capture different reactions on particular platforms; they do not prove that every fan objects for the same reason.
