The car was built in 2005 as a Maybach–Fulda high-speed concept, not as a production coupe, and is now publicly exhibited by the Nationales Automuseum The Loh Collection in Germany.
Why the Exelero is associated with Jay-Z
The Exelero appeared prominently in Jay-Z’s 2006 video for “Lost One,” a single from Kingdom Come. Forbes identified it as a one-off concept car in the video, and Complex likewise connected the car to the clip: Forbes and Complex.
That striking appearance explains the common shorthand “Jay-Z’s Maybach Exelero,” but a person driving a vehicle in a music video is not evidence of legal ownership. The careful description is that Jay-Z drove the Exelero in “Lost One,” or that the car featured in the video.
Did Jay-Z own the Maybach Exelero?
Ownership is unresolved in the public record available in the cited coverage. A 2025 report addresses the misconception directly, distinguishing the car’s video appearance from proof that Jay-Z owned it: HotCars.

Other secondary accounts tell conflicting stories about an earlier private collector, proposed or reported European transactions, and rapper Bryan “Birdman” Williams. They differ on names, prices, payment and whether a car was delivered; without title records, auction documentation or seller records, these claims should not be treated as settled ownership history. The Nationales Automuseum’s announcement establishes the Exelero’s public collection connection, not who holds legal title.
What the Maybach Exelero is
Mercedes-Benz describes the Exelero as a unique 2005 high-performance concept, based on the Maybach 57 S and created jointly by Maybach and Fulda, the German tire manufacturer. Fulda commissioned it as a development and demonstration vehicle for its Carat Exelero ultra-high-performance tires. The project’s long, low two-door body drew on streamlined Maybachs associated with earlier Fulda tire testing, while its wide tires and high-speed brief were central to the design—not merely styling flourishes. It was built as a one-off, not a series-production model. The Nationales Automuseum calls the vehicle in its collection the record-setting 2005 Exelero and emphasizes that only one was made: the museum’s March 25, 2026 announcement.
Engine and documented speed run
Mercedes-Benz records a 5,908-cc V-12 petrol engine producing 515 kW (700 hp) and a maximum 1,020 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm. On May 1, 2005, former DTM champion Klaus Ludwig reached 351.45 km/h at Italy’s Nardò high-speed facility, using standard tires. That is a documented test result from a specific run, not an ordinary road-car top-speed rating.

The Exelero’s technical significance lies in the combination of a Maybach 57 S basis, substantial V-12 output and a purpose-built tire-development role. Period road-test coverage described the prototype as exceptionally valuable and demanding to drive; those are the publication’s observations, not independent tests by this article: Autocar’s Exelero road test.
Where the Exelero is now
As of the Nationales Automuseum The Loh Collection’s March 25, 2026 announcement, the Exelero is among the collection highlights at the museum in Ewersbach, Hesse, Germany. This supports describing the car as publicly exhibited or held in that collection. The announcement does not establish whether the museum owns it outright, displays it on loan or holds it through another arrangement.

What is known about its price?
The frequently repeated figure of around $8 million is a reported historical valuation or asking-price figure, not a verified current sale price. Because the Exelero is unique and lacks a normal comparable-sales market, a current value cannot be stated reliably without a documented transaction or appraisal. It is safer to attribute the historical figure than to call it today’s value or declare the car definitively the world’s most expensive.
Why the car matters beyond the video
The Exelero joins several distinct stories in one vehicle: a one-off Maybach concept, a Fulda tire-development project, a 700-hp V-12 high-speed test car and a pop-culture landmark made familiar to a wider audience through Jay-Z’s video. The celebrity connection brought attention, but the engineering brief and the 2005 Nardò run are what make the car more than a music-video prop.
