Héra, the central heroine of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is compared to Hayao Miyazaki’s heroines by her voice actor, Gaia Wise. That is an actor’s comparison—not evidence that director Kenji Kamiyama or producer Philippa Boyens directly modeled Héra on a Miyazaki character. The film takes a brief, unnamed figure from Tolkien’s appendices and develops her into a named protagonist.
Is Héra actually based on a Miyazaki heroine?
The available comments support a comparison, not a confirmed direct influence. In a June 11, 2024 interview, Gaia Wise, who voices Héra, said the character “bears a stronger resemblance to the heroines of Hayao Miyazaki films like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind than to classic Lord of the Rings heroines like Arwen and Eowyn.” Wise also called Héra “fierce, complex, and rebellious.” Read the interview.
Wise’s comparison describes how she sees the character; it does not establish that the filmmakers deliberately based Héra on Nausicaä or another Miyazaki heroine. Nor does it amount to a settled critical consensus. The useful distinction is between resemblance in characterization and a documented claim about creative influence.
Who is Héra in Tolkien’s story?
Héra is Helm Hammerhand’s daughter and the film’s central heroine. Tolkien’s account of Helm in the appendices to The Lord of the Rings mentions a daughter who is important to the conflict but does not give her a name. Producer Philippa Boyens recalled: “We know Helm has a daughter, and we know that she was central to the conflict that happened.” Read Boyens’s interview.

Boyens and screenwriter Phoebe Gittins were interested in that relatively undeveloped figure and asked who she was and how she lived. The film gives her the name Héra and expands her into a protagonist. Her characterization, therefore, is the adaptation’s development of Tolkien’s brief reference—not a fully formed heroine transferred unchanged from the books.
Why did the filmmakers choose anime?
Boyens said the story seemed suited to anime because it is character-focused and takes place within a contained world. She also felt it spoke to elements that work well in Japanese storytelling. In her words: “I immediately felt that it would work for anime because it’s so character-based and also contained within its own world.” Read the interview.

The film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama. His framing of the story emphasizes the risks and obligations that come with authority: “What, then, is power? What is the responsibility of those who possess it?” Read the interview. That thematic question gives the adaptation a broader concern than whether Héra resembles one particular animated heroine.
