Morena Baccarin is a strong fit for Vanessa in Deadpool: she gives Wade Wilson’s love interest a presence beyond the romance, and director Tim Miller praised the film’s cast. But “perfect” is a matter of taste, not a casting fact—and there is no verified list of ten actresses who competed for the role. The alternatives below are fancasts, not reported contenders. Because no licensed images are supplied here, this is a role-fit comparison rather than a photo gallery.
Why Morena Baccarin works as Vanessa
Vanessa is emotionally important to Wade, not just a romantic subplot. Contemporary reviews described the connection between the characters as central to the film’s story; TIME’s review discusses the relationship in its assessment of Deadpool (TIME). Baccarin’s performance gives that connection room to register alongside the film’s jokes and violence.
Miller’s comments offer a useful glimpse into his casting perspective. In an interview with IndieLondon, the director said, “I could not have asked for a better cast,” and recalled thinking Baccarin was “too beautiful for Vanessa” when she first came in (IndieLondon). That is Miller’s personal recollection—not an objective measure of what Vanessa should look like, or proof that appearance determines suitability.
Baccarin herself described Vanessa as a departure from the “good girl” roles associated with some of her earlier work, and spoke about collaborating on scenes (The Credits / Motion Picture Association). That perspective helps explain why her casting can feel right: the character is not simply an idealized girlfriend waiting offscreen, but a participant in the film’s adult, irreverent tone.

Ten fancast alternatives—and what each would bring
These are subjective alternatives, not actresses reported to have auditioned, been considered, or been available for the part. The comparison uses four editorial criteria: dramatic range for Vanessa’s emotional stakes, comic timing for a comedy built around Wade’s irreverence, potential chemistry with a hypothetical Wade, and action experience where relevant. “Better” here means only a different interpretation a viewer might prefer; it is not a verdict on the performers or on Baccarin.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead
A fancast for viewers who imagine Vanessa with a more overtly action-capable edge. The appeal would be a contrast between grounded emotional scenes and physical confidence, rather than a claim that this version is inherently superior.

Jessica Chastain
Could suggest a more formidable, dramatic Vanessa, with a sharper shift between seriousness and Wade’s comic chaos. This choice would change the relationship’s texture more than simply reproduce Baccarin’s approach.
-
Samara Weaving
A possible fit for a more heightened, darkly comic take. The fancast imagines someone able to meet an eccentric tone without making Vanessa feel like a joke herself.

Jurnee Smollett
Could bring a forceful screen presence to the role’s emotional confrontations and action-oriented possibilities. The case for this version rests on the balance of intensity and vulnerability the character needs.
-
Zoë Kravitz
A quieter, more sardonic interpretation might make Vanessa’s exchanges with Wade feel especially dry and self-possessed. That is a tonal preference, not a casting-history claim.

Adria Arjona
Could play the character with a grounded, contemporary feel, letting the oddness of Wade’s world provide much of the comic contrast.
-
Rebecca Ferguson
For viewers who would prefer Vanessa to have a cooler, more imposing presence, Ferguson is an alternative worth imagining. That approach might make the romance less conventional and the character’s authority more pronounced.
-
Aubrey Plaza
A more deadpan, acerbic Vanessa could make Wade’s jokes meet a particularly unsentimental response. This is the most deliberately comic tonal shift in the list, and would need emotional warmth to keep the relationship from becoming only a banter contest.
How to judge the fancasts
There is no objective scale for who is “better” for Vanessa. A useful comparison asks what a particular version would change: would the character feel more action-oriented, more dramatic, more sardonic, or more closely matched to Wade’s comic rhythm? It should also keep performance separate from appearance. A photo can show a performer’s look in one moment; it cannot establish chemistry, timing, or the ability to carry a dramatic scene.
What Baccarin’s return says about Vanessa
Baccarin reprised Vanessa in Deadpool & Wolverine. In later comments reported by CinemaBlend, she said she had a lovely time working on the film but felt Vanessa had less screen time and an unsatisfying journey (CinemaBlend). That is Baccarin’s reported view of the character’s treatment in that film; it does not establish a general audience consensus. It does underline why screen time and story purpose matter as much as casting when judging whether Vanessa feels fully realized.
