The confirmed December IMAX date for Interstellar in the available official and news reports is December 6, 2024—a limited tenth-anniversary engagement, not a newly verified December 2026 release. Those reports do not confirm a new December 2026 date. For a screening now, check a theater’s listing for the specific location and date.
What December date was confirmed?
IMAX’s official listing identifies Interstellar: IMAX Exclusive (2024) as a limited engagement beginning December 6, 2024. The Associated Press described it as a North American tenth-anniversary re-release. These are historical listings and reports; they do not establish current showtimes.

The reporting describes screenings in 70mm IMAX and IMAX Digital, but not every theater used 70mm film. AP reported especially strong demand for 70mm IMAX screenings, with theaters adding showings.
Is a new December 2026 IMAX release confirmed?
No December 2026 date is confirmed in the cited IMAX listing or AP report. That is not proof that no theater or distributor will schedule a later screening; it means the documented December date is for 2024, and the sources cited here do not verify a new 2026 engagement.

How the December screenings differ across years
| Engagement | What was announced or reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Original 2014 run | The original theatrical release was announced for November 7, 2014. Paramount later said the circuit-wide domestic IMAX engagement ended December 14, with selected North American locations continuing through at least the December 19 weekend. | Paramount Pictures, December 15, 2014 |
| California Science Center, 2014–15 | A separate engagement was announced for December 26–30, 2014, with selected Friday and Saturday screenings from January 2 to 17, 2015. | Paramount Pictures, December 24, 2014 |
| Tenth-anniversary event | IMAX listed a limited engagement beginning December 6, 2024. AP reported the North American anniversary re-release. | IMAX; The Associated Press, December 10, 2024 |
What the anniversary re-release showed about demand
AP reported that the 2024 re-release earned $4.5 million from 166 U.S. and Canadian screens during its anniversary weekend. The same report put the average across 10 70mm IMAX film screens at $70,000 per theater. These are figures for that reported weekend, not a current box-office total or a promise of future screenings.

In its 2014 announcement, Paramount and Warner Bros. said the film had passed $100 million in worldwide IMAX theaters by December 15, 2014. Paramount reported worldwide box-office receipts of more than $621 million at that time. Both figures describe 2014 reporting, not current lifetime totals.

Paramount said more than an hour of Interstellar was shot with IMAX cameras and that sequences filmed in 35mm were digitally remastered for IMAX presentation. That studio description explains the film’s large-screen presentation, but it does not identify the projection format at every later venue. For a specific show, look for an explicit 70mm IMAX or IMAX Digital label in the theater’s listing.

AP quoted director Christopher Nolan saying he found it rewarding to see new audiences experience the film on large IMAX screens, particularly on IMAX film prints, ten years after its release. That comment reflected the 2024 anniversary event; it is not an announcement of another date.
