The house is now presented to visitors through Magnolia castle tours. The available sources do not confirm who owns or lives in it today, so its current ownership should not be assumed.
What is Cottonland Castle?
Cottonland Castle is a real historic residence at 161 S 33rd St in Waco, Texas. Its story began long before it appeared on television: stone contractor John Tennant started building it in 1890, and the house was completed in 1913 as a home for businessman Alfred Abeel. The Texas Historical Commission designated it a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1977. Texas Historical Commission
How the Gaineses came to restore it
Chip and Joanna Gaines purchased the property in 2019. Magnolia says Chip had pursued the castle for nearly 20 years, making offers when it came back on the market. The couple described the appeal as bringing new life to an abandoned, century-old building in the heart of Waco. Magnolia’s account of why they bought it
The restoration became the subject of the television project Fixer Upper: The Castle. The City of Waco says the renovation was completed in summer 2022; Magnolia published its reveal in November of that year after describing roughly a year of work.
