It can be—but there is no universal winner. If you already own a serviceable office PC, its measured electricity use and any repair or replacement costs may be less than a cloud service bill. A cloud service may be a better fit when running the stream remotely and reducing hands-on monitoring matter more than minimizing cash cost. Compare the same stream workload over 30 days before deciding.
Compare the same job over 30 days
A fair comparison includes more than the PC’s electricity bill versus a cloud provider’s headline rate. Use the same resolution, frame rate, streaming hours and storage needs for both options. Count the costs and effort required to keep the stream running.
- Old PC: electricity measured at the wall, repairs or replacement parts, any internet cost added by streaming, and a fair share of the PC’s purchase cost if it is not already a sunk cost.
- Cloud: the actual 30-day service charge, plus any storage or other applicable charges, and the time needed for setup, monitoring and troubleshooting.
- Both: consider connectivity, recovery after an interruption and the attention required to keep the stream live. Cloud hosting does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

Input power in kilowatts × operating hours × local electricity price per kWh = electricity cost
For a 30-day always-on stream, use 720 operating hours. For example, if your measured draw is P watts and your electricity price is T per kWh, the electricity estimate is (P ÷ 1,000) × 720 × T. This is a formula, not an assumed Indian tariff or a claim about how much a particular PC draws.

- Measure the PC’s wall draw while it is encoding the intended stream workload. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help; no particular model is required here.
- Check your applicable electricity price per kWh, including the relevant tariff details for your location.
- Multiply the measured kilowatts by 720 hours and your price per kWh.
- Add repairs, replacement parts and incremental internet charges. If the PC is not already owned or its purchase cost is not truly sunk, include an appropriate share of that cost too.
Define the stream workload before comparing
An old office PC is only a low-cost option if it can encode the stream you actually intend to run and sustain the connection reliably. YouTube’s recommendations give you a common baseline for defining that workload, but they do not certify any particular PC or internet plan.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its bitrate figures are recommendations, not guarantees that your PC can encode the chosen format or that your connection can maintain the upload. Choose a quality your connection can sustain and check stream health during testing.

YouTube also says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Include representative audio and motion when you test; a static test image alone may not reflect the intended workload.
Do not mistake a cloud rate for a like-for-like quote
The IndiaAI Compute Portal lists GPU services with on-demand and reserved hourly rates. Its surfaced listing includes an AMD MI325X.1X instance at ₹169.2 per hour on demand and ₹85.5 per hour for a 12-month reserved rate. These are portal-listed rates for that GPU instance—not a quote for a basic CPU-only virtual machine, a managed YouTube streaming service or a particular creator’s eligibility.

The portal’s compute listings and calculator provide context for instance and storage pricing. Check current terms, taxes, storage, access conditions and whether an instance is suitable before using any rate in a comparison. Do not compare a GPU instance price with PC electricity alone and call the result like-for-like.
NIC webcast is a separate government service, not a general creator’s monthly cloud quote. NIC says that only Central and State Government institutions can use the service. Make the decision with your own numbers
Fill in both sides for an equivalent 30-day period. If a figure is unknown, get a measurement or an actual quote rather than substituting an unrelated cloud rate.

The missing inputs are personal: your city and tariff, measured PC draw, whether the PC is already owned and serviceable, planned hours, target quality, internet plan, the specific cloud plan and required storage. Without them, a single rupee winner would be guesswork.
