Inside Venice’s Jewish Ghetto: Segregation, Community and What to See

Venice’s Jewish Ghetto was created by force: a 1516 decree confined the city’s Jews to a designated quarter behind gates that shut at night. Within and around that boundary, Jewish communities with different origins built synagogues, schools, businesses and cultural institutions. Today, the Ghetto remains a lived-in historic quarter; its streets and squares are distinct from ticketed synagogue tours and the Jewish Museum, whose access status can change.

How the Ghetto was established

From temporary residence to compulsory confinement

Before 1516, most Jews in Venetian territories lived in mainland settlements. Some Jewish merchants and moneylenders could enter Venice temporarily, but they did not have stable residence in the city. In 1513, during a difficult political and economic period, Venice permitted Jewish residence under a system of passes and tribute. After opposition and competing proposals, the Senate ordered Jews living in Venice to move to the Ghetto Nuovo.

The decree was issued on 29 March 1516. The Jewish Community of Venice’s website translates its order as requiring “All Jews currently living in various parts of the city and those that come to the city hereafter” to live together in the Ghetto, near San Girolamo. The English is the website’s translation, not the decree’s original language.

Restrictions shaped daily life

Residents were not merely assigned a neighborhood. According to the Jewish Community of Venice, they paid rents one-third higher than the standard rent, had to wear a yellow cap, and were enclosed by gates that closed in the evening and reopened at dawn. Restrictions also governed movement and occupations. The community source estimates that roughly 700 German and Italian Jews, along with a handful of Levantine families, moved into the Ghetto Nuovo in a relatively short time; that estimate is not a census of every Jewish person in Venice.

Several communities, and an expanding Ghetto

Venetian Jewish life was not a single, uniform community. The city’s official historical account distinguishes German, Italian, Levantine and Ponentine communities, whose members had different histories, customs, languages, congregations and relationships with Venetian authorities.

  • Ghetto Nuovo: The original designated area, where German and Italian Jews and some Levantine families were required to reside after the 1516 decree.
  • Ghetto Vecchio: Levantines occupied neighboring streets here from 1541.
  • Ghetto Nuovissimo: Sephardic Jews from the west later established a presence here in 1633.

The names describe connected parts of a changing urban landscape, not interchangeable labels for one undifferentiated population. The expansion reflects the arrival and settlement of communities with distinct backgrounds and institutions.

Religious, cultural and commercial life

Confinement did not erase communal life. Jewish residents established synagogues and study houses, developed Jewish printing, and took part in different kinds of trade and economic activity. The institutions served communities with their own traditions while forming part of the larger life of Venice.

The Jewish Museum of Venice traces its origins to survivors of the Holocaust who gathered after the Second World War to establish Italy’s first Jewish museum. Its collection includes ritual silver, textiles, rare books and objects from five synagogues and three study houses. These objects help convey the breadth of religious and intellectual life, but they do not make the separate histories of the communities identical.

What the name “ghetto” means—and what is uncertain

The Venetian word became globally associated with the enforced separation of a minority. Its precise local origin, however, is disputed. Ghetto Venezia presents the former public foundries on the site as the leading explanation among scholars, while noting that competing derivations remain. The foundry connection is plausible, not settled fact.

How the enclosure ended

In 1797, French troops toppled the Venetian Republic and the gates were removed. The legal and physical transition happened on different dates: a University of Milan study says the municipal decree formally sanctioned the opening on 7 July 1797, while the opening was effectively carried out on 10 July. The end of the enclosed quarter did not erase its history or the community’s later experiences.

Ghetto Venezia’s historical account says 246 members of Venice’s Jewish community died in concentration camps during the Sho’ah. This is the figure given by that account.

Visiting the Ghetto today

Walking the quarter and entering its historic interiors

The Ghetto’s public streets and squares can be experienced as an urban quarter; entry to synagogue interiors is a separate, ticketed guided visit. A walk through the area and a synagogue tour therefore offer different kinds of access, rather than interchangeable versions of the same visit.

As of 3 October 2026, the official Ghetto Venezia visitor page said the Jewish Museum was completing a renovation and that public reopening was scheduled for autumn. That statement does not establish whether the museum has since reopened. Check the official visitor information before travelling for its current status, hours and access arrangements.

Guided synagogue visits

On the same date, the official page listed scheduled tours that ordinarily included the Levantine and Spanish synagogues, with a different Friday route because of religious activities. It also described access to the Italian Synagogue on Fridays. These arrangements do not mean that all five synagogues are open to visitors at once, or that museum admission is included while the museum is under renovation.

The page listed the tour meeting point as Campo di Ghetto Nuovo, 2882, Cannaregio. Its listed full-price guided ticket was €15 and its concession ticket €13 on 3 October 2026. Because routes, prices, start times and closures are operational details that may change, confirm them on the official page before setting out. The page also described private synagogue visits and cemetery tours by appointment.

Hours listed on 3 October 2026

The official visitor page listed Ghetto complex hours as Sunday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., and Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with last entry 45 minutes before closing. It listed closures on Saturdays and Jewish holidays, as well as dated exceptions. Treat these as the schedule reported on that date, not a guarantee of current access.
