Start with the viewer, the platform, the video and one goal. Then write copy that accurately tells people what the video offers and what to do next. A post caption, a YouTube title and description, and accessibility captions are different pieces of writing; treating them as interchangeable is a common source of confusion.
First, decide what “copy” means for this video
Social media video copy can refer to promotional text displayed with a post, metadata such as a YouTube title and description, or the words shown on screen as subtitles or closed captions. Each serves a different purpose.

A practical writing sequence
1. Brief the post before drafting
Write one line naming the audience, platform, video subject, viewer benefit and primary goal. Choose one goal—such as comments, saves, link visits or helping viewers find the video—so the copy can make a clear request rather than competing for several actions.

2. Open with what the video actually delivers
Name the subject or the useful payoff in plain language. A documentary clip might begin with the event, person or question it examines; a short excerpt might say which part of the larger story viewers are seeing. Do not imply that the video answers a question or proves a claim unless it does.
3. Add only the context needed
Give readers enough information to understand the clip and why it is relevant. If the post links to a full documentary, explain what is at the destination and use descriptive link text where the platform allows. Avoid vague prompts such as “click here” when you can name what the link opens.
4. Ask for one suitable next step
Match the call to action (CTA) to both the goal and the content. Ask a specific question when inviting discussion; invite a save when the video contains information viewers may want to revisit; explain the destination when asking for a click. Meta’s caption guidance recommends tying the CTA to the post’s goal, but no wording guarantees a particular response.

5. Adapt the wording to the platform
Do not paste identical copy everywhere by default. Meta’s examples offer starting points: short, direct wording for TikTok, a hook and question for Shorts, and clearer, less sales-heavy language for LinkedIn. These are examples from Meta, not fixed rules or independent evidence that one style performs better. TikTok for Business’s hook, product-benefit validation and CTA advice is for short-form advertising; TikTok says there is no single video formula. Treat advertising guidance as a creative starting point, not a promise about organic posts.
6. Review, then publish
- Check that the caption, title and description accurately describe the actual video.
- Read the first lines on a phone-sized screen: platforms may truncate or collapse longer copy.
- Check links, spelling, names and any claims against the video and destination.
- Review accessibility and any disclosure obligations separately from the promotional wording.
Write YouTube titles and descriptions for different jobs
Title: accurate, concise and front-loaded
YouTube recommends an accurate, succinct title and advises putting important words near the beginning. Decide whether a direct, searchable title or a curiosity-led title better serves the intended audience, but do not sacrifice accuracy for intrigue. YouTube’s guidance describes practices, not a guaranteed ranking result.
Description: explain the video in its opening lines
Use a unique description for each upload. Describe the video in the opening lines, where viewers can see what it is before expanding the rest, then add relevant context and links. YouTube recommends using one or two main descriptive terms naturally in both the title and description. That is a cue to be clear and consistent, not to repeat keywords unnaturally.

For a documentary upload, a useful description might identify the subject and time or place covered, explain whether the video is a full film or an excerpt, and name any linked companion material. Do not add details the video does not establish. YouTube Analytics can show how viewers found a video, including search terms; use that information to understand discovery rather than assuming a particular phrase will improve reach.
Make the copy accessible as well as persuasive
Keep subtitles and closed captions accurate
Promotional captions are not subtitles. Captions should be synchronized and accurately represent speech; where relevant, include important non-dialogue sounds. Automatic captions can mishear names, technical terms and overlapping voices, so review them for spelling, punctuation, speaker identification and meaningful sounds before relying on them. Upload and automatic-caption options vary by platform and format; check the current publishing interface for the specific video type.
Give viewers useful context in the post text
A brief description of the video helps people understand what they are about to watch. Use plain language, meaningful link text and CamelCase hashtags, such as #FilmHistory, so multiword tags are easier to read. Use emoji sparingly and do not make them carry information that the surrounding words should convey.

Some video also needs audio description so that important visual information is available to people who cannot see it. Consider whether the narration explains the images and on-screen text essential to understanding the story; post copy alone cannot substitute for missing detail within the video. Warn viewers in the post text about flashing visuals, intense motion, or loud or abrupt audio when these are present.

If an endorsement requires disclosure, do not assume a notice buried in a long description is sufficient. The Federal Trade Commission’s endorsement-guides FAQ says, “The disclosure has the best chance of being clear and conspicuous if it’s included in the video itself.” Consider the video and its accompanying text together, and check the current FTC guidance and platform presentation for the particular format. The FTC FAQ also notes that Instagram descriptions may be truncated to the first two or three lines, so important information can be missed if it appears only further down.
Measure what viewers do, without treating copy as a formula
Use the platform’s current native analytics to evaluate the outcome that matches your goal. For YouTube, Analytics can report how viewers found a video and the search terms involved. For other platforms, use their own analytics rather than assuming YouTube reporting applies. Compare posts with attention to audience, platform, format and goal; the official guidance cited here does not establish that any particular hook, keyword, hashtag or CTA will increase reach or engagement.
