How to Encode 4K Videos for a YouTube Live Loop Without Oversized Files

A compact 4K source file does not need to match YouTube’s live bitrate. Choose an offline encode for the footage, then configure and test live ingest separately.

Keep the saved 4K video compact by choosing its offline codec and average bitrate for the footage and duration—not by copying YouTube’s live-stream bitrate. Then configure the live output separately to meet YouTube’s ingest requirements. A smaller source file still has to be decoded and encoded by your live setup.

Why the source file and live bitrate are different

A prerecorded loop has two separate stages: an encoded file stored on your computer, and a live stream sent from your encoder to YouTube. The file’s size is governed mainly by its average video and audio bitrates and its duration. The live output bitrate is a separate setting chosen to fit the resolution, frame rate, codec, and YouTube ingest guidance.

YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers. Its published 4K live bitrate recommendations apply to the input sent to YouTube, not to the file you save locally. Using a 30 Mbps live recommendation as the target for every source file can create unnecessarily large files; choosing a small file does not, by itself, reduce the live encoder’s output bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder settings and its separate upload encoding settings cover different workflows.

Choose the 4K output mode first

If 4K delivery matters, retain 3840 × 2160 resolution. Use the source’s native frame rate when it makes sense; 30 fps is a practical choice for footage that does not need the extra motion smoothness of 60 fps. YouTube supports live frame rates up to 60 fps. Avoid raising frame rate without a reason: it can increase both encoding demands and the data needed to represent motion.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose the codec based on what your playback and live-encoding workflow can actually decode and send. H.264 is the conservative compatibility choice. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported live video codecs. More efficient codecs may achieve a given visual result at a lower bitrate, but only help if your full playback and encoding chain supports them.

Make the source file smaller without guessing

Set a bitrate for the footage, not a universal 4K number

There is no single source-file bitrate that guarantees good-looking 4K for every video. Fast motion, fine texture, gradients, and image noise tend to expose compression artifacts sooner than relatively still, clean footage. Encode a representative passage, then inspect it at full resolution for blocking, banding, smearing, and lost fine detail. Adjust quality or average bitrate based on what you see.

To reduce file size, lower the source’s average video bitrate, remove an unnecessary frame rate, or use a more efficient codec that your workflow supports. Each reduction trades away some margin for image detail. Do not assume a small file will remain pristine on a large 4K display; check the scenes most likely to show damage.

File size in GB ≈ (video Mbps + audio Mbps) × duration in seconds ÷ 8,000

For example, a 10-minute file averaging 20 Mbps in total is approximately 1.5 GB; at 10 Mbps total, it is approximately 0.75 GB. These are arithmetic estimates, not measured encoder results. Variable bitrate, audio, container overhead, and encoder behavior can change the final size. If you have a strict size target, calculate a target average bitrate for the video’s duration, encode a sample, and inspect both its quality and actual file size.

Set YouTube’s live output independently

The following are YouTube Help’s published recommendations for the live input stream. They are not recommended bitrates for the saved loop file. Select the row that matches both your output codec and frame rate.

Live output Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
4K / 2160p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
4K / 2160p at 30 fps H.264 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
4K / 2160p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
4K / 2160p at 60 fps H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s current published live encoder recommendations; platform guidance can change. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum interval of four seconds. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube’s guidance also says low-latency optimization is not available for 4K / 2160p.

For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, it recommends H.265/HEVC and says AV1 is not supported for HDR; HDR uses 10-bit. Confirm that the source, encoder, and ingest settings agree before starting an HDR loop.

Loop the file with OBS

  1. Add a local video: In OBS, add a Media Source and select the encoded file. Turn on Loop in that source’s properties. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. If the file does not play reliably, try a format and codec that your system can decode consistently.
  2. Use a playlist if needed: Add a VLC Video source for a playlist and enable Loop Playlist, which is on by default. VLC must be installed for this source.
  3. Configure live output separately: Set OBS’s stream output for the intended 4K resolution, frame rate, supported codec, CBR bitrate, and two-second keyframe interval. Enter the YouTube stream key in the streaming setup; treat it as a password and do not share it.
  4. Test and monitor: Before relying on the loop, test with audio and motion representative of the actual program. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages while it is running; a file that loops locally does not prove that the live ingest is healthy. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Keep the network and ingest stable

Your sustained upload capacity needs to support the chosen live output, with room for normal connection variation. A connection that briefly reaches the target may still struggle over a continuous stream. If YouTube reports unstable ingest, check the live output bitrate and frame rate against the selected codec, confirm the encoder is using CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, and verify that the connection can sustain the chosen rate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a home computer or connection to run continuously, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the upload; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.

Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. Plans have the same features; only the billing period changes. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
