The best way to watch videos with friends online depends on where the video comes from. For YouTube, start with Discord Watch Together. For Netflix and similar services, try Teleparty or Scener. For an unsupported website, use Discord screen sharing; for a personal video file, use Syncplay. Apple users can also use FaceTime SharePlay when the video app supports it.
These tools usually synchronize playback rather than provide access to paid content. For most subscription services, every participant still needs their own account or subscription, and the same title must be available in each person’s country.

Discord Watch Together, Teleparty, Scener, Discord screen sharing and Syncplay all solve different versions of the same problem.
What “watch together” means
There are four common approaches:
- Synchronized playback: Everyone’s device plays its own authorized copy while the service coordinates play, pause, seeking and sometimes the playlist.
- Screen sharing: One person streams a browser tab, application window or entire screen to the group.
- Shared local playback: Everyone opens the same local file, while software keeps the media players aligned.
- Separate communication: The video is synchronized by one tool while voice, video, text chat or reactions happen in Discord, FaceTime or another call.
A watch-party link normally does not bypass a paywall, regional catalog restriction or account requirement. Teleparty says participants need access to the streaming service being used, and Scener gives similar guidance for subscription services.

Best for YouTube: Discord Watch Together
Discord Watch Together is the simplest choice for groups already using Discord. It launches from a voice channel, direct message or group message, searches YouTube or accepts a YouTube link, and keeps playback synchronized. You can also build a shared playlist and use Discord voice or video chat at the same time.
How to start a session
- Open Discord and enter a voice channel, DM or group message.
- Open the Apps or Activities launcher.
- Search for Watch Together and launch it.
- Search for a video or paste a direct YouTube URL.
- Add videos to the shared playlist.
- Stay in Hosting mode if one person should control playback.
- Use Sharing mode if everyone should control the video and playlist.
Discord recommends enabling hardware acceleration on desktop under User Settings > Advanced before starting an Activity. Volume changes are local: lowering the volume changes only the person who lowers it. The embedded player also does not support signing in to a YouTube account during the Activity.
If the Activity will not launch, check hardware acceleration. If a video will not play, try its direct YouTube URL instead of search. For a large group, keep one host in control; for a smaller group, Sharing mode can make collaborative queues easier.
For Netflix and other streaming services: Teleparty or Scener
Teleparty and Scener are designed for supported streaming platforms, including services such as Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Max, Crunchyroll, Paramount+ and ESPN+. Their support lists and requirements can change, so check the current official compatibility information before planning a movie night.

Teleparty
- Install Teleparty from its official website or official browser listing.
- Open the supported streaming service in a compatible browser.
- Sign in to your streaming account.
- Start the movie, episode or video.
- Select the Teleparty button in the browser toolbar.
- Create the party and copy its invitation link.
- Send the link to your friends.
- Have each participant install or open Teleparty and sign in to the relevant service.
Most participants need their own account or subscription, and the title must be available in everyone’s region. A party link does not transfer access or overcome geographic restrictions. If playback drifts, close duplicate tabs, reload the stream and use the party’s resynchronization or restart controls when available.
Teleparty’s basic offering may be free. Its official support page displayed Premium pricing of $6.59 per month or $3.99 per month billed annually, with an annual total of $47.88, when reviewed. Treat those figures as time-sensitive rather than permanent pricing.
Scener
Scener is a useful alternative when the group wants richer social rooms. Its FAQ describes private rooms for up to 10 party-goers with video, audio and text chat, while larger theaters can support unlimited guests with text chat; video and audio chat in a theater is limited to the host and co-hosts.
Desktop hosting and viewing require Google Chrome and the Scener extension. Mobile users can chat and view a live host’s theater in supported situations, but cannot host or co-host from a phone or tablet. Hosting and joining are described as free, although premium features, rentals or tickets associated with some events may cost extra.

Choose Teleparty for a straightforward browser-based party with text chat. Choose Scener when theater-style events or integrated voice and video features matter more than mobile hosting.
When the video is unsupported: Discord screen sharing
Screen sharing is the most flexible fallback for a presentation, livestream, personal video, ordinary webpage or unsupported app. It is not the same as synchronized playback: the host supplies one compressed stream, and everyone watches that stream.
Desktop steps
- Start or join a Discord voice channel or DM call.
- Select the Screen or streaming icon.
- Choose the specific application window or browser tab when possible.
- Select Go Live.
- Ask friends to select the stream and join.
- Keep voice chat enabled for conversation.
Discord’s documentation says screen sharing can use an application window or the entire screen and supports up to 50 people sharing video or a screen at once in a voice chat. Audio capture is supported on Windows and macOS desktop, Chrome and mobile clients; Discord says audio sharing is unavailable on Linux.

Discord specifically notes that some mobile apps, including Netflix and Spotify, may not support screen or audio sharing. A black screen can also result from sharing the wrong window, an unsupported client or a browser conflict, so screen sharing is not guaranteed to work with every service.

Share only the video tab or application window. Close private tabs, messages and password managers, turn off notifications and use headphones to prevent echo.
For personal video files: Syncplay
Syncplay is best when everyone already has the same legally obtained or otherwise authorized video file. It synchronizes media players such as VLC or mpv but is not a file-sharing service.
- Install Syncplay from its official project page.
- Install a compatible player such as VLC or mpv.
- Give every participant the same video file, ideally with matching filename, duration and subtitles.
- Open Syncplay and select the same server and room.
- Choose the media player and load the video.
- Use Syncplay’s play, pause and seeking controls.
- Use Syncplay’s text chat or a separate voice call for conversation.
Different encodes can have different runtimes or frame timing. Mismatched subtitle files can drift, and firewall or server problems can stop someone joining the room. If playback diverges, pause, compare the files and subtitle tracks, and let everyone catch up before restarting.
iPhone and iPad: FaceTime SharePlay
FaceTime SharePlay works when the video app supports Apple’s shared playback feature. Start a FaceTime call, open the supported app, select a video and choose the SharePlay or shared-content control.

YouTube’s current instructions say participants must be signed in with personal Google accounts and that a YouTube Premium member must initiate the session; other participants can join without Premium after it begins. This guidance is for iPhone and iPad, and other services may impose their own subscription requirements. SharePlay is therefore app-dependent, not a universal method for every website.
Other useful options
Messenger Watch Together
In the Messenger mobile or desktop app, start a video call, select Watch Together at the bottom of the call and choose a video. The feature supports Facebook Reels, Facebook Watch videos and Instagram videos or posts. It is not available in Messenger in a browser such as Safari, and it is limited to Meta content.

WatchParty.me offers YouTube watch rooms, queues, screen sharing, optional video chat and a Discord bot. It can suit a group that wants a dedicated YouTube room rather than a full Discord setup, but it is not a general solution for Netflix, Disney+ or every other streaming service.
Fix common problems

Privacy, copyright and account rules
- Use official watch-party tools and install browser extensions only from the vendor’s official listing.
- Do not upload or rebroadcast copyrighted video without permission.
- Do not assume screen sharing makes a paid subscription transferable; account and platform terms still apply.
- Share a personal file only with people authorized to view it.
- Never use a watch-party tool as a way to bypass DRM, paywalls or geographic restrictions.
- Before starting, confirm the title, language, subtitles and edition are identical for everyone.
Google Meet’s YouTube co-watching flow should not be treated as a dependable recommendation: YouTube’s help page includes a warning that the Android feature will be removed in July. Use the current platform-supported options above instead, or use ordinary Meet screen presentation where appropriate.
