The Mission: Impossible films are best watched in release order. Unlike franchises built around prequels and shifting timelines, this series follows a straightforward progression from Ethan Hunt’s first major IMF assignment to the later films’ increasingly direct connections with his past.
There are currently eight feature films. The television series that inspired the franchise is separate and is not required before starting the Tom Cruise-led movies.

Why release order is the right order
The release order is also the story order. There is no separate chronological sequence that rearranges the films into a more coherent timeline. Ethan Hunt’s relationships, the IMF’s changing status, and the series’ recurring characters develop from one film to the next.
The connections become especially important from Ghost Protocol onward. Rogue Nation and Fallout are closely linked, while Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning form the latest continuing storyline. Watching them out of order can reveal character histories and plot developments earlier than intended.

What to expect from each film
| Film | What it contributes to the series |
|---|---|
| Mission: Impossible | A tense espionage thriller that establishes Ethan Hunt, the IMF, disguises, betrayals and the franchise’s preference for practical-looking set pieces. |
| Mission: Impossible II | John Woo’s stylized entry, with a stronger emphasis on romantic drama, slow-motion action and highly choreographed combat. |
| Mission: Impossible III | A more personal story that gives Ethan a life outside his work and introduces a particularly memorable antagonist. |
| Ghost Protocol | A major shift toward large-scale spectacle, including the Burj Khalifa sequence and the introduction of a team dynamic that carries forward. |
| Rogue Nation | Expands the series’ spy mythology with the Syndicate and brings Ethan into conflict with an organization designed to mirror the IMF. |
| Fallout | Directly follows the consequences of Rogue Nation and builds on Ethan’s previous choices, alliances and enemies. |
| Dead Reckoning | Introduces a new global threat centered on a powerful artificial intelligence and begins the story continued by The Final Reckoning. |
| The Final Reckoning | Continues the events of Dead Reckoning and serves as the eighth film in the current movie series. |
How long does the complete marathon take?
The eight films have a combined runtime of approximately 1,107 minutes, or 18 hours and 27 minutes. That total excludes breaks, so watching the entire series in one sitting would be impractical for most viewers.
A manageable schedule is two films per day over four days. The shortest first film is 111 minutes, while the later entries are considerably longer: Dead Reckoning runs for 163 minutes and The Final Reckoning for 169 minutes. Those final two are better treated as full evening viewings rather than quick additions to a double feature.

Where to stream the films in the United States
As of August 9, 2026, all eight Mission: Impossible movies are available to stream on Paramount+ in the United States, including The Final Reckoning. That means a current U.S. subscriber does not need to combine Paramount+ with Prime Video to complete the film marathon.
Streaming catalogs change, and availability can differ outside the United States. If a title does not appear in your local Paramount+ catalog, check a regional streaming-search service or the film’s local digital rental listings.

Two title details that can cause confusion
Dead Reckoning Part One
The seventh film was released theatrically as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Paramount’s current movie page and many streaming listings use the shorter title Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning. These are the same film, not two separate entries.
The Final Reckoning
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is already a released film, not an upcoming installment. It opened in theaters in 2025 and began streaming on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada on December 4, 2025.

- The complete 2-movie collection of Tom Cruise's final Mission Impossible saga.
Do you need to watch the television series?
No. The original Mission: Impossible television series, which ran from 1966 to 1973, and the later 1988–1990 revival are separate adaptations. Paramount+ may list the television series alongside the films, but neither is required to understand the movie continuity.
The movie timeline begins with the 1996 film starring Tom Cruise. For a first viewing, start there and continue through the eight films in release order.
