The reliable setup is: antenna, tuner, or lawful IPTV source → NextPVR Server → Kodi’s NextPVR PVR Client. Kodi is the television interface; NextPVR handles tuner access, channel scanning, guide data, live-TV buffering, scheduling, and recordings.
Do not install Kodi’s PVR IPTV Simple Client for this connection. That add-on is intended for M3U/XMLTV IPTV feeds. NextPVR requires the separately named NextPVR PVR Client.
What this setup does
Kodi does not discover antenna channels or operate as a DVR by itself. It displays live channels, the electronic program guide, timers, and recordings supplied by a PVR backend.

Kodi- Tuner or source: Receives broadcast or network television.
- NextPVR: Detects or imports channels, obtains guide data, manages tuner availability, buffers live TV, schedules recordings, and writes files to storage.
- Kodi: Provides the living-room interface for channels, the guide, playback, timers, and recordings.
- Storage: Holds recordings and the live-TV buffer.
- EPG provider: Supplies program listings for browsing and scheduled recordings.

What you need
You need the following before beginning:
- A Kodi device, such as a Windows, Linux, macOS, or other supported Kodi system.
- A computer or server that remains powered on whenever recordings are scheduled.
- A compatible source: USB or PCIe tuner, HDHomeRun or another supported network tuner, SAT>IP tuner, IPTV source, or supported capture device.
- Enough local or network storage for recordings and live-TV buffering.
- A network connection if Kodi and NextPVR run on separate devices.
- Reliable guide data, such as broadcast listings, XMLTV, or Schedules Direct.
An antenna alone is not enough: it must be connected to a tuner supported by NextPVR. Likewise, installing a PVR add-on does not make an arbitrary streaming service recordable.
Regional and source limitations
Support varies by operating system and tuner model. ATSC is common for North American over-the-air television; DVB variants are common in many other regions. Cable and satellite channels may use copy protection or DRM that prevents recording, even when a compatible tuner is detected.
IPTV recording depends on the provider’s stream, stability, rights, and terms of service. Use lawful sources and confirm that recording is permitted. NextPVR’s platform documentation lists supported source types and varies the details by Windows, Linux, Docker, and macOS.

Install NextPVR
- Download NextPVR from the official download page.
- Install it on the machine connected to the tuner or hosting the IPTV source and recordings.
- Open the web interface at
http://localhost:8866orhttp://localhost:8866/index.html. - Sign in using the initial credentials provided by the installation or documentation.
- Change the initial web password immediately and configure the separate player-access PIN.
Port 8866 is NextPVR’s documented default web-server port, but installations can use a different port. The PIN used by Kodi is not necessarily the same as the NextPVR web-app password. Keep those credentials distinct.
Do not expose the NextPVR web interface directly to the public internet through casual port forwarding. For remote use, use a protected network design such as a properly configured VPN and understand the security implications of remote access. See NextPVR’s access and device settings.
Add a tuner or IPTV source
Broadcast or physical tuner
- Open Settings → Devices in NextPVR.
- Allow NextPVR to detect the tuner, or add it manually if required.
- Select the appropriate broadcast standard and region.
- Run a channel scan.
- Remove unwanted channels and correct blank or poorly identified channel names.
- Assign an EPG source and map listings to channels.
- Save the configuration and test a channel in NextPVR before configuring Kodi.
NextPVR can automatically find many tuner devices, including supported network tuners such as HDHomeRun. Detection does not guarantee that every channel is recordable: subscription channels may be encrypted or copy protected.
IPTV
IPTV setups generally involve separate pieces:
- M3U playlist: Channel streams and metadata.
- XMLTV guide: Program listings.
- Catch-up or archive service: Optional and provider-dependent.
- Recording: Possible only when the stream is stable, technically compatible, and legally recordable under the provider’s terms.
Import the provider’s playlist using NextPVR’s IPTV configuration, then import or configure the matching XMLTV data. If the playlist works but the guide is empty, the channel identifiers in the playlist and XMLTV file may not match.

Live playback can work without a useful guide, but convenient one-time and series recordings depend on accurate listings.

Potential sources include broadcast-provided listings, XMLTV files, Schedules Direct, and XMLTV data supplied with an IPTV service. For North American users, NextPVR notes that a dedicated service such as Schedules Direct may be required when broadcast listings are inadequate.
- Configure the EPG source in NextPVR.
- Map channels to the correct guide entries.
- Run the initial guide update.
- Confirm that titles, times, and episode information appear.
- Enable or verify automatic updates.
- Check the system clock and time zone.
NextPVR documents XMLTV scripts, Schedules Direct configuration, channel mapping, automatic updates, and manual guide updates in its additional setup documentation. Avoid manually updating guide data during an active recording if your provider warns that the update could disrupt recording activity.
Configure recordings and live-TV buffering
Before connecting Kodi, set the recording and buffer locations in NextPVR:
- Recording directory: Use a reliable local disk or a properly configured network share.
- Live-TV buffer directory: Use a location with sufficient free space and good write performance.
- Pre-padding and post-padding: Add time before and after programs to protect against inaccurate schedules.
- Duplicate handling: Prevent unwanted repeat recordings where appropriate.
- Alternate airings: Allow NextPVR to use another showing when a tuner conflict prevents the preferred airing.
- Disk monitoring: Watch free space, especially with high-bitrate broadcast streams.
Do not rely on a universal gigabytes-per-hour estimate. File size varies substantially between MPEG-2, H.264, HEVC, and transcoded recordings. Network storage also requires correct permissions for the NextPVR service account.
A single tuner may not record one channel while you watch another. Some broadcast systems allow multiple channels on the same multiplex, while multi-tuner or network-tuner hardware increases concurrency. Test your specific device rather than assuming that “one tuner” means only one possible stream in every situation.
Connect Kodi to NextPVR
- Open Kodi’s Settings.
- Select Add-ons.
- Choose Install from repository.
- Open PVR clients.
- Select NextPVR PVR Client.
- Choose Install, then open Configure.
- Enter the NextPVR server address.
- Enter the port, normally
8866. - Enter the NextPVR player-access PIN.
- Save the settings and restart Kodi, or reload its PVR manager.
If Kodi and NextPVR are on the same computer, use 127.0.0.1 or localhost. If they are on different devices, use the NextPVR server’s LAN IP address or a resolvable hostname. Do not use localhost on the Kodi device when the server is actually elsewhere.
The official NextPVR PVR Client documentation covers the server address, port, and PIN fields. NextPVR should be working independently before you attempt this step.

- NextPVR live playback: Confirm that a channel plays in the web interface.
- NextPVR guide: Confirm that current listings match the channels.
- NextPVR recording: Schedule a short recording and verify that a file is created.
- Kodi connection: Confirm that Kodi imports channels and guide data.
- Kodi live playback: Start a channel and change channels.
- Pause and seek: Confirm that the live buffer works.
- Kodi timer: Schedule a recording from the guide.
- Kodi playback: Open the completed recording from Recordings.
- Concurrent use: Watch one channel while recording another if the tuner is supposed to support it.
Watch live TV and record programs in Kodi
Once the client is connected, Kodi normally exposes functional areas such as:
- Channels: Start live television and switch channels.
- TV Guide: Browse current and future listings.
- Timers: Review and manage scheduled recordings.
- Recordings: Play completed programs.
To make a one-time recording, select a future program in the guide and choose the recording or timer action. Where the backend and guide expose the required metadata, you can create a series recording rather than scheduling each episode manually.
Pause, resume, and rewind work only within the portion retained by the live-TV buffer. The available rewind time depends on the buffer location, free storage, source behavior, and configured limits. Exact menu names can vary with Kodi’s release, skin, platform, and add-on version.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Kodi cannot connect to NextPVR
- Confirm that NextPVR is running.
- Open
http://localhost:8866on the server. - Check that Kodi uses the server’s LAN IP or hostname when it is on another device.
- Verify the port.
- Verify the player PIN, not merely the web password.
- Check firewall rules and network reachability.
- Make sure the server is not asleep or powered off.
- Restart Kodi’s PVR manager after saving the add-on settings.
Kodi has no TV menu
Check that the NextPVR PVR Client is installed and enabled, the PVR manager has finished initializing, NextPVR contains valid channels, and channel names are not blank or malformed. Kodi skins may hide the TV entry until usable channels are available. The Kodi NextPVR documentation specifically warns that blank channel names can cause startup problems.
Channels exist but the guide is empty
- Confirm that an EPG source is assigned to the channels.
- Run an initial update and verify that it completed.
- Check the lineup, region, credentials, and XMLTV URL or file.
- Confirm that guide identifiers match the imported channels.
- Check the system clock and time zone.
- Make sure the listings are current rather than stale.
Live TV works but recordings fail
- Confirm that the recording directory exists.
- Check write permissions for the NextPVR service account.
- Check available disk space.
- Look for tuner conflicts or single-tuner limitations.
- Check whether the IPTV stream is unstable.
- Prevent the server from sleeping during recording windows.
- Verify channel and program mapping.
- Test network-share reliability if recordings are stored remotely.
Playback stutters or stops
Check Wi-Fi and LAN performance, tuner signal quality, CPU/GPU load, transcoding, network-share throughput, and client decoder support. MPEG-2, H.264, HEVC, AAC, AC-3, and E-AC-3 can impose different requirements. NextPVR’s decoder guidance explains relevant live-TV and transport-stream considerations.
A remote Kodi client cannot play recordings
First test playback through the NextPVR client. A remote Kodi device may fail if the recording path is only a local server path, a network share lacks permissions, the file is still being written, the client cannot decode the original codec, or the network cannot sustain the original bitrate.
Cable or satellite channels are missing
A detected tuner does not guarantee access to every subscription channel. Encryption, DRM, and copy-protection flags can prevent recording or playback. Do not assume that NextPVR can record protected premium or cable channels.
When Kodi and NextPVR are a good fit
This combination suits users who want Kodi’s customizable television interface, local recordings, a dedicated always-on server, and control over their tuner and storage. It is especially attractive for technically comfortable home-media users who do not mind configuring guide data, networking, and permissions.
It is a poor fit if you expect Kodi alone to discover antenna channels, have no machine available during recording times, need a turnkey appliance, depend on DRM-protected sources, or want polished official apps across many platforms without maintaining a backend.
