How to Use YouTube Live Redirect with an OBS Stream

Live Redirect is configured in YouTube Studio, not OBS. Here’s how to set the destination, go live with OBS, and troubleshoot the handoff.

Set up Live Redirect in YouTube Studio—not in OBS. Choose an eligible Premiere or another channel’s live stream as the destination, connect OBS to YouTube with the server URL and stream key, then end your source broadcast in Live Control Room to trigger the handoff. Viewers may need to wait for the page to reload; anyone with autoplay off must press Play.

What Live Redirect does—and what OBS does

YouTube Live Redirect hands viewers from your stream to a selected Premiere or another channel’s live stream after your source stream ends. OBS encodes and sends your audio and video to YouTube; it does not choose or perform the redirect. You configure the destination in the source video’s YouTube Studio or Live Control Room settings. YouTube’s Live Redirect help page describes the feature and its requirements.

Check access before setting up the handoff

There are separate requirements for sending a redirect and for livestreaming generally. YouTube’s current Live Redirect guidance requires the sending channel to have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance separately requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check both sets of requirements before scheduling the handoff.

If the destination is another channel’s live stream, that channel must allow your channel to redirect viewers to it. YouTube describes options for allowing subscribed channels, all channels, or specific approved channels; the manual approval list can include up to 100 channels. The receiving creator controls these permissions. Studio labels and available options can change, so confirm them in the current settings.

Choose a destination that will be ready

For a Premiere, schedule or set it up before your source stream. YouTube recommends preparing the Premiere in advance. For another creator’s stream, coordinate with them and confirm both that the destination will be available and that their channel permits your redirect.

Destination Best fit What to arrange
Your channel’s Premiere Sending viewers to a scheduled video on your own channel Set up or schedule the Premiere before the source stream.
Another channel’s live stream Passing viewers to another creator’s broadcast Confirm the destination will be available and the receiving channel has allowed your channel to redirect to it.

Set up Live Redirect and connect OBS

  1. Open the source live video in Studio. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, select Live, and open the source live video for editing.
  2. Select the redirect destination. Open Customization, find Redirect, choose Add, then select an available Premiere or live stream. If a channel or destination is missing, confirm it is available and, for a cross-channel redirect, ask the receiving creator to check their redirect permissions.
  3. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, select YouTube if it is offered. Otherwise, enter YouTube’s server URL and your stream key. Keep the key private; it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel.
  4. Start the encoder feed and check the preview. Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm it is the correct video and audio.
  5. Start the YouTube broadcast. When the preview is ready, use the Go live control in Live Control Room. OBS sending video and YouTube making the broadcast live are distinct parts of the workflow. For the encoder connection steps, see YouTube’s guide to streaming with an encoder.
  6. End the source broadcast to hand viewers off. End the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from OBS as appropriate. The selected redirect takes effect after the source ends.
  7. Tell viewers what to expect. Let them know the page may take a few seconds to reload. Viewers who have autoplay disabled need to click Play on the destination. YouTube also explains these viewer behaviors in its Live Redirect guidance.

Troubleshoot a missing destination or failed handoff

  • Redirect controls or choices are unavailable: Check that the sending channel meets Live Redirect eligibility—more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes—and that the source video is open in Studio. General livestream eligibility is a separate check.
  • Another channel does not appear: Confirm the destination is available, then ask its creator to review their receiving-channel redirect permissions. They control whether your channel is allowed.
  • The Premiere is not listed: Set it up or schedule it before the source stream, then check the source video’s Customization > Redirect settings again.
  • The OBS feed is not visible in Live Control Room: Check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube channel and is using that channel’s current server URL and stream key. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
  • Viewers remain on the source page: Confirm the source broadcast has ended in Live Control Room. Allow time for the page to reload; viewers with autoplay off must select Play on the destination.
