How to Use NVENC with FFmpeg for a Continuous YouTube Stream on a VPS

A practical guide to verifying NVENC on a VPS, looping a video with FFmpeg and testing a continuous YouTube Live stream.

To loop a video file as a continuous YouTube Live stream from a VPS, you need an instance that actually exposes a supported NVIDIA GPU, working drivers, and an FFmpeg build with NVENC. Then create a YouTube live stream, configure FFmpeg to loop the file and send a compatible feed over RTMPS, and test the complete setup before relying on it. A VPS label or an installed FFmpeg binary alone does not guarantee NVENC is available.

What you need before you start

  • An NVENC-capable runtime: the VPS must expose an NVIDIA GPU and a working driver to the environment running FFmpeg. FFmpeg cautions that hardware acceleration depends on supported hardware and a suitable driver; not every VPS plan or container exposes one. NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guide describes NVENC as a dedicated hardware-based encoding block.
  • An FFmpeg build with NVENC: NVIDIA names h264_nvenc, hevc_nvenc and av1_nvenc among its encoders. Confirm which encoders your installed build exposes, then run an encode test on the actual VPS.
  • A source file and network connection: the example below assumes one file with video and audio. Your VPS must sustain the chosen upload bitrate with headroom.
  • A YouTube Live destination: create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio and obtain its ingest URL and stream key.

This guide uses H.264 at 1080p30 as an example. If you need another resolution, frame rate or codec, choose values from YouTube’s current encoder settings and verify your host can sustain them.

Confirm the VPS can use NVENC

  1. Connect to the VPS and run nvidia-smi -L. NVIDIA documents this command for listing GPUs. If no GPU is exposed, this instance cannot perform NVENC encoding as configured.
  2. Check FFmpeg’s encoder list with ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders and look for h264_nvenc. An encoder listed by FFmpeg is not proof that the runtime can access the hardware.
  3. Run an encode test with -c:v h264_nvenc against a representative video. NVIDIA advises testing hardware-accelerated transcoding after configuring the FFmpeg binary. Resolve driver compatibility or device-access errors before building the live command.
  4. If the VPS exposes more than one GPU, NVIDIA documents selecting a hardware device with -hwaccel_device. Confirm device selection and encoding on your actual instance.

A CPU-only VPS may still be able to encode using a software codec, but that is a different setup; NVENC requires accessible NVIDIA encoding hardware.

Create a YouTube Live destination and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains that the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it.
  2. Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest details in FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted protocol. The exact destination path is supplied for the stream; do not assume a generic path will work.
  3. Treat the key as a password. Keep it out of public scripts, repositories and logs. Store it in a protected configuration or secret mechanism appropriate to your VPS. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.

Choose resolution, bitrate and keyframe interval

YouTube’s current live encoder settings specify RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. For an H.264 stream, the YouTube table gives these example bitrate figures:

Output profile YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
720p30 H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published encoder-setting values, accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that a particular VPS network can sustain them. For the 1080p30 command below, 14 Mbps is the recommended example target. Select a rate the server’s connection can hold steadily, and consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for other profiles and codecs. The page’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP targets a two-second keyframe interval. Keep the outgoing resolution, frame rate and bitrate aligned with both YouTube’s selected profile and the capacity of the VPS connection. Lower-latency settings can increase playback buffering, so choose latency based on whether real-time interaction matters; see YouTube’s latency settings guidance.

Loop the file and send it with FFmpeg

This illustrative command assumes /srv/media/loop.mp4 contains one video stream and one audio stream, and encodes audio as AAC. Replace the generic destination with the RTMPS URL and protected key provided for your YouTube stream. It is a starting point, not a tested configuration for every FFmpeg, NVIDIA driver or VPS combination.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/media/loop.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v h264_nvenc -preset p4 -tune hq
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

What the important options do

  • -re reads the file at its native rate for a live-source workflow.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. It appears before -i because FFmpeg input options apply to the next input.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? selects the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. The optional marker avoids failure solely because an audio stream is absent, but a silent stream may not suit your use case.
  • -c:v h264_nvenc selects NVIDIA’s H.264 hardware encoder. The example uses -preset p4 -tune hq; preset names and supported options vary across FFmpeg and NVIDIA versions.
  • -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 sets 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP, targeting a two-second interval. -sc_threshold 0 disables scene-cut keyframe insertion for this example.
  • -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M sets the target and maximum video rate and a two-second-sized buffer for the 14 Mbps example. These flags alone should not be described as proof of explicit CBR mode. Check the installed encoder’s supported rate-control options with ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc, configure the option your build supports, and verify the resulting stream.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p requests a widely used pixel format. The audio options encode AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz rather than copying whatever codec the source happens to contain.
  • -f flv selects the output container used for this RTMP-family destination.

If you instead use -c:a copy, first confirm the input audio codec is suitable for the destination. Check the input streams with FFprobe or FFmpeg’s input information before broadcasting. If the source has no audio, decide whether to omit audio mapping or supply an appropriate audio stream rather than assuming the example will create one.

Test the stream before making it public

  1. Start with a private or unlisted YouTube stream, using representative motion and audio rather than a short, unusually simple sample.
  2. Check that FFmpeg starts without NVENC, input, mapping or destination errors, and that the stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm the received resolution, frame rate and bitrate behave as expected. YouTube advises testing before going live and matching test audio and motion to the real stream.
  4. Only switch to the intended audience after checking the video, audio, stream health and loop transition. A successful initial connection does not establish that a VPS can maintain the stream indefinitely.

Keep a continuous stream operating

The loop option repeats the file, but it does not make FFmpeg a complete 24/7 reliability system. The process can stop because of a network error, host reboot or input problem. For ongoing operation, use an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor, configure restart-on-failure, retain logs and alert on missed restarts or lost YouTube stream health. The exact configuration depends on your Linux distribution and supervisor; verify reconnect behavior on the actual host instead of assuming it.

Keep the stream key in protected configuration, and ensure logs or error reports do not expose it. If the key leaks, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the running service. Monitor both FFmpeg’s process state and YouTube’s stream-health messages: a running process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • h264_nvenc is missing from FFmpeg: the build may not include the encoder. Check ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders; use a build with NVENC support and then test access to the GPU.
  • NVENC reports unavailable hardware or a device error: verify the VPS or container exposes an NVIDIA device, check the driver and runtime compatibility, and confirm FFmpeg has device permissions. FFmpeg’s hardware acceleration depends on supported hardware and a suitable driver.
  • FFmpeg connects but YouTube reports a stream-health problem: compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval with the chosen YouTube profile. Check sustained upload capacity and inspect Live Control Room messages.
  • The command fails while mapping audio: inspect the input streams. The sample assumes a video stream and allows optional audio mapping; adjust mapping and audio encoding for the real file.
  • FFmpeg rejects a preset or rate-control option: inspect ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc on that instance. Accepted options depend on FFmpeg and NVIDIA versions; do not assume an option from another build is supported.
  • The stream stops after a reboot or network interruption: run FFmpeg under a supervisor with restart-on-failure, preserve logs and verify that restart and reconnect behavior restores the YouTube feed.
  • The key was exposed: reset it in Live Control Room, replace the secret in the service configuration and restart the encoder with the new key.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to stay live without maintaining a VPS, FFmpeg process and GPU configuration, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for uploaded videos and playlists:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

Each slot streams at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. It includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. For a VPS-free setup, start your free StreamNeo day.
