To loop a video file to YouTube Live from an India-based VPS, install FFmpeg, upload and inspect the media, then publish it to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube’s live setup. FFmpeg can repeat a file indefinitely, but a continuous stream also depends on compatible encoding, enough sustained VPS upload capacity, and monitoring in YouTube Live Control Room.
What you need before starting
- A Linux VPS with a region, CPU allowance, outbound bandwidth terms, and long-running process support that suit a continuous stream. Confirm current terms with your provider; no particular India-based host or route is established here.
- A video file you have the rights to stream, stored on the VPS.
- FFmpeg built with the required encoders and RTMP protocol support. Build options vary; check your installed version and capabilities rather than assuming every package includes the same features.
- A YouTube channel set up for live streaming, with the current ingestion address and stream key available in its live setup.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and confirm the current requirements when configuring a broadcast.
Choose output settings that match the source and your VPS
Bitrate and resolution
YouTube Help’s published H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those formats, not universal minimums or guarantees. The same YouTube table lists minimum bitrates and separate values for other codecs, so consult it for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying an H.264 figure to HEVC or AV1.
Set the output resolution and frame rate to match the material and the broadcast you intend to run. A higher resolution or frame rate generally requires more upload capacity and, when re-encoding, more CPU. Your VPS needs sustained upload capacity above the configured stream bitrate, with headroom for network variation. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and checking stream health; an advertised VPS port speed alone does not establish that a route will sustain your stream.

Re-encode or copy the existing streams
Re-encoding with an explicit video and audio codec gives you control over the output settings, but it uses CPU continuously. Stream-copying avoids re-encoding and can reduce compute demand, but only use it if the source streams already meet YouTube’s chosen codec, format, bitrate, and other ingestion requirements. Inspect the file and test the result; do not assume a file extension proves compatibility.
RTMPS and the stream key
YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video streaming protocol.” Use the current RTMPS ingestion address provided by your YouTube live setup where available, along with the associated stream key. Do not publish the key in a script repository, screenshot, shared command, or other place accessible to people who should not control your stream. FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol behavior is documented at FFmpeg Protocols Documentation; YouTube’s API documentation describes its live ingestion details at YouTube Live Streaming API getting started.

Put the file on the server
Upload the recording to a stable path, for example
/srv/video/documentary.mp4. Ensure the account that will run FFmpeg can read the file and has enough local storage for it. -
Inspect its streams and duration
Use
ffprobe /srv/video/documentary.mp4to examine the video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and duration. Check that the file has the audio and video you expect. If the input has no audio stream, remove the audio mapping and audio encoder options from an encoding command rather than expecting FFmpeg to create sound.Rank #3

Check sustained capacity
Compare the configured bitrate with the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity and transfer policy. If you plan to re-encode, check that the VPS can encode the selected format at real-time speed. Test the actual route and watch YouTube’s stream health; neither an India location nor a provider’s nominal network speed by itself verifies that a continuous broadcast will work.
Build and test a looping FFmpeg command
The following is an H.264/AAC example for a 1080p, 30 fps broadcast. It loops the file, paces input in real time, re-encodes the selected streams, targets YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation for that format, and sets a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps). Replace the ingest URL and key with the values from your own YouTube live setup. This is a starting point, not a command guaranteed to suit every source, FFmpeg build, or ingest configuration.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The example uses FFmpeg’s file-input loop option to repeat the media indefinitely and -re to read a file at its native real-time pace rather than sending it as fast as possible. The -map options select the first video and first audio streams; adjust them if inspection shows a different layout. -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, which corresponds to two seconds at the specified 30 fps. If you change the frame rate, change the GOP accordingly to preserve an approximately two-second keyframe interval and stay within YouTube’s four-second ceiling. CBR-oriented rate settings in this example are intended to approximate a fixed 14 Mbps video rate; audio is additional to that video bitrate.
Environment variables keep the key out of the command text, but they are not a complete secret-management system: access to the process environment may expose them, and values entered interactively can remain in shell history depending on how they are set. Restrict VPS account access and use a protected configuration or secret mechanism appropriate to your environment. Never replace the placeholders with a real key in material you share publicly.
Use a different format only after checking the matching guidance
For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps; for 1080p at 60 fps it is 17 Mbps. Those values do not determine the correct settings for H.265/HEVC or AV1. Before changing the example’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or pixel format, check YouTube’s current encoder table and whether your FFmpeg build supports the encoder you choose.

Short test before leaving it unattended
- Start a test broadcast using the intended file and settings.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the broadcast is being received, with expected audio and video and acceptable stream health.
- Watch for buffering, dropped frames, encoder overload, or an ingest error. If the stream is unstable, reduce the configured bitrate or output demands and retest; verify the VPS route and sustained capacity as well.
- Stop the test and correct any mismatched codec, stream mapping, keyframe interval, key, or ingest address before relying on the loop.
Keep the process running and recover from failures
A command running in an interactive SSH session may stop when that session ends or the process is interrupted. For an unattended stream, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager configured to start it at boot and restart it after failure. The exact service configuration depends on your Linux distribution and how you manage secrets; ensure the service account can read the media and protected configuration.
Restarting FFmpeg can restore a process after a crash, but it does not prove that YouTube accepted the reconnect or that the stream is healthy. Verify recovery in Live Control Room and monitor the VPS process, network, and available disk space. YouTube’s stream-health indicators remain the relevant check on what the platform is receiving.
Troubleshooting common failures
- FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or protocol: The installed build may not include the selected encoder or RTMP support. Check
ffmpeg -encodersandffmpeg -protocols; install a compatible build or choose a supported option. - YouTube does not receive the broadcast: Check that the current ingest address and stream key are copied exactly from the live setup, that the key corresponds to the intended broadcast, and that the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Keep the key private while correcting it.
- Video or audio is missing: Recheck the input with
ffprobeand confirm the-mapselections. Remove or alter an audio mapping if the source does not contain the mapped stream. - Stream health shows buffering or dropped frames: Check actual sustained outbound capacity and reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if needed. A route or VPS plan may not sustain the configured output even if its advertised peak speed appears sufficient.
- The VPS is overloaded: Re-encoding may exceed the CPU allowance. Test at the intended real-time settings; if the input is already compatible, consider stream-copying, or use lower-demand encoding settings and retest.
- The picture does not match the selected output: Confirm the source dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format, then explicitly configure scaling or frame-rate conversion if required. Do not treat the sample command as a guarantee of output dimensions for every source.
- The stream stops when SSH disconnects: Run it under a service manager or supervisor rather than relying on the interactive shell, and check that the process remains active after logout.
- The stream does not resume cleanly after a disconnect: Check FFmpeg logs, the VPS network, and YouTube Live Control Room. Process restarts and platform ingest recovery are separate; confirm the platform is receiving video again.
India-specific VPS checks
An India-based VPS may be convenient for administration or routing, but the available evidence does not establish which Indian provider, region, or route performs best. Before committing, verify the provider’s current data-center region, sustained CPU allowance, outbound transfer or bandwidth policy, long-running process rules, and support arrangements. Test the exact stream from the chosen machine and evaluate its total cost for continuous operation; no current provider price or regional performance figure is established here.
For Indian channels, including documentary streams with licensed or original material, check the rights for every video and audio element before broadcasting. A loop command does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. YouTube may also apply its channel monetization and reused-content policies independently of whether the stream technically works; consult current YouTube rules rather than assuming that continuous playback is eligible for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a Linux VPS and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos.
