To loop an ordered set of local video clips into a YouTube Live stream, put compatible files in an FFmpeg concat list, then use the concat demuxer with -stream_loop -1 and real-time input pacing. FFmpeg sends each clip after the previous one; it does not create transitions or make mismatched files compatible. The steps below cover playlist syntax, encoding, YouTube settings, and common failures.
1. Check whether the concat demuxer fits your clips
The concat demuxer treats a text list of files as one virtual input. FFmpeg’s documentation describes it as reading files and directives from a text file and demuxing them one after another, as if their packets had been muxed together. It is a good fit when the clips are already compatible and you want to avoid an intermediate joined file.
- Each file should have the same stream layout, codecs, and time bases—for example, matching video and audio streams.
- The demuxer plays clips consecutively. It does not add transitions or normalize each clip’s picture, audio, or format.
- If the clips differ in codec, stream layout, or timing, normalize or re-encode them first, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the demuxer approach from the filter approach and recommends the filter when re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg FAQ.

2. Create the concat playlist

Put the clips and playlist in a working directory, or decide how you will refer to each clip from the directory where FFmpeg will run.

Create a UTF-8 or ASCII-compatible plain text file named
playlist.ffconcat. Its first line must be exactlyffconcat version 1.0—no leading blank, extra spaces, or byte-order mark—so FFmpeg can recognize the format automatically. -
Add one
filedirective per clip, in the order you want them played:ffconcat version 1.0 file 'clip1.mp4' file 'clip2.mp4' file 'clip3.mp4' -
Use simple relative paths where practical. Paths with spaces or special characters must be quoted or escaped using concat-file syntax; this is not a shell command line. The demuxer’s safe-path check is on by default. For a trusted playlist with absolute paths or paths FFmpeg considers unsafe, use
-safe 0before-i. Do not disable that check for a playlist you do not trust.Rank #2

3. Get the YouTube Live ingest details
Create or select the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and copy the ingest URL and stream key YouTube provides. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Use the current RTMP or RTMPS ingest information supplied by YouTube rather than guessing an endpoint.

The page lists RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR guidance. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance for your chosen output rather than treating the sample command below as universal.
4. Run the loop with FFmpeg
This representative RTMP(S) command shows the workflow. It is an illustrative starting point, not a tested or universally suitable preset. Replace the ingest URL and stream key with your own values, and choose output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the source material and the upload connection.

-f flv "$INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY"-repaces a file-based input at its native rate instead of reading and sending it as fast as storage permits.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-f concatselects the concat demuxer.-safe 0relaxes its path restrictions; omit it when simple safe relative paths suffice.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which corresponds to a two-second interval at the command’s 30 fps. At a different frame rate, set the GOP length accordingly to target YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval.- The sample encodes H.264 video and AAC audio. Its 4500 kbps video rate is only an example; consult YouTube’s current settings for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, and ensure your connection can sustain the output.
The example assumes the input has audio. If clips have no audio, the command does not manufacture an audio stream; choose a deliberate silent-audio source or another audio plan compatible with the output you intend to send.
5. Test and monitor the broadcast
YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion representative of the real stream, then monitoring stream health and messages while live. Start the encoder and check YouTube Live Control Room before relying on a long loop. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes stream states such as active, ready, inactive, and error, along with health states including good, ok, bad, and noData.

FFmpeg does not recognize the playlist
Check that ffconcat version 1.0 is the exact first line, with no blank line, leading characters, or byte-order mark. Confirm the file is plain text and paths use concat syntax rather than shell quoting rules.

FFmpeg rejects paths
Try simple relative filenames from the working directory. For absolute paths or paths rejected by the safe-path check, use -safe 0 as an input option before -i, and only when you control and trust the playlist.
Clips fail at a boundary or produce artifacts
Verify that every clip has matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Also check duration metadata, truncation, and whether audio and video lengths differ. The demuxer schedules each next file using the previous file’s duration; if you know the correct duration, a duration directive can override an incorrect value. For incompatible sources or per-clip normalization, prepare a common format or use a filter-based workflow.
YouTube reports no data, bad health, or an ingest error
Verify the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, then inspect YouTube’s health messages. Check that FFmpeg is still running, the output is paced in real time, and the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Use the current YouTube encoder settings if the codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, or bitrate may be outside its guidance.

The stream has no sound
Check whether the source clips contain audio streams. The example command maps an audio encoder but does not create audio from silent inputs; supply a deliberate audio source or configure an output plan that matches the intended stream.
