For a video call, share the Keynote slideshow window directly from the conferencing app instead. The right method depends on whether your audience is meeting participants or viewers of a public broadcast.
Choose the right way to present
| Audience and goal | Recommended approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| People in a video call | Play the slideshow in a window and share that window through the conferencing app. | Sharing controls differ by app; confirm the audience view before presenting. |
| Viewers of a public broadcast | Capture the Keynote window or display in OBS using macOS Screen Capture. | Check framing, presenter privacy, and OBS permissions before going live. |
| FaceTime presentation | Use FaceTime’s Share Slideshow flow on Mac, or share the iPhone screen. | Presenter Overlay is documented for macOS Sonoma 14 or later. |
Apple’s Keynote presentation guidance covers playback and conferencing. OBS explains its macOS capture source and permissions in its macOS Screen Capture documentation.
Present Keynote in a video call on Mac
- Open the presentation. In Keynote, choose Play > In Window for windowed playback, or Play > In Fullscreen if your display setup calls for it. Windowed playback makes it easier to access other information on your Mac while presenting. (Apple: Play a presentation.)
- Start the slideshow. Choose Play > Play Slideshow. If you chose windowed playback, resize the slideshow window as needed.
- Share the right window or screen. In your conferencing app, use its Share menu to select the Keynote slideshow window, or the appropriate display if your setup requires it. The exact controls depend on the app, so consult its current instructions for the menu labels.
- Protect presenter notes. If you use the presenter display for notes and next-slide controls, keep it outside the area you share. In Keynote, open Keynote > Settings > Slideshow and uncheck Show presenter display window in other applications if you do not want other apps to display it. This setting is not a substitute for checking what participants see: Apple warns that some conferencing apps may show the presenter display when it falls within the shared screen area.
- Advance and stop sharing. Use the left and right arrow keys to move through slides. End sharing using your conferencing app’s controls.
Put Keynote into an OBS broadcast on Mac
OBS’s macOS Screen Capture source can capture a whole display, one application, or one window. For a slide presentation, start with a Keynote window and capture that window where practical; capturing an entire display can include unrelated windows or presenter controls if they appear there.
- Choose Keynote playback. In Keynote, choose Play > In Window and start the slideshow. Use full-screen playback only if it fits the display and capture arrangement you intend to use.
- Allow screen recording. Grant OBS macOS Screen Recording permission so it can capture desktops, windows, and apps. OBS lists Camera and Microphone permissions separately for camera and microphone sources; those are needed only if you add those sources.
- Add a capture source. In your OBS scene, add a macOS Screen Capture source and select the relevant Keynote window, application, or display. Compose it with any other sources you want in the scene.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm that the slide area is framed correctly and that notes, controls, or other private windows are not visible. OBS recommends testing settings for a few minutes before a first stream in its Quick Start Guide.
- Check audio needs against macOS. OBS documents audio capture through this source on macOS 13 and later. On macOS 12.3–12.6, the documented capture is available without audio. Recheck OBS’s current guide for the supported behavior on your installed macOS and OBS versions.
A capture card is not required for this documented workflow: OBS’s macOS source can capture the display, application, or window directly. OBS mentions capture cards as a general source type, not as a requirement for Keynote.

Other ways to present Keynote
FaceTime on Mac
During a FaceTime call, open the deck, select the starting slide, click Play, then choose Share Slideshow when prompted. Apple says the slideshow and presenter display appear in separate windows. On macOS Sonoma 14 or later, Apple documents Presenter Overlay, which can show the presenter and presentation together. See Apple’s FaceTime screen-sharing instructions.
iPhone
Start screen sharing in FaceTime or another conferencing app, open Keynote, select the starting slide, and tap Play. Navigate from the device, and use the app’s controls to stop sharing. Apple provides the steps in its iPhone Keynote presentation guide.

Keynote for iCloud
Start the slideshow in a browser, open the presenter display if needed, then share the slideshow window through FaceTime or your chosen conferencing app. The presenter display can show current and next slides and notes separately. Apple’s Keynote for iCloud instructions describe the browser workflow.
Multiple presenters
Keynote on Mac supports a multi-presenter slideshow for a shared presentation. The host starts the slideshow and can share control with another presenter; the host retains control, while co-presenters have more limited control unless the host grants it. This suits teams taking turns while using a separate conferencing app. See Apple’s multi-presenter guidance.

Troubleshoot common presentation problems
- Participants see notes or controls: The presenter display may be inside the area being shared, or the app may be showing it because it overlaps that area. Move the presenter display outside the shared region, select only the slideshow window if possible, and verify the audience view.
- OBS shows a blank or frozen capture: Check that OBS has macOS Screen Recording permission, then confirm that the source targets the active Keynote window or display. If you changed permission settings, follow macOS’s prompt to restart or reopen the affected app if required.
- The slides are cropped or too small: Resize the Keynote slideshow window and adjust its placement in the OBS scene, then inspect the preview again before streaming.
- There is no captured audio: OBS documents audio capture from its macOS Screen Capture source on macOS 13 and later; its documented macOS 12.3–12.6 support is without audio. Check your OS version and OBS’s current documentation, and make sure the source and audio routing match your intended setup.
- The share menu looks different: Screen-sharing controls vary by conferencing app. Use that app’s current help for its exact sharing choices rather than assuming every service labels or handles window sharing the same way.
