RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS. It encrypts the connection between an encoder and a streaming service’s ingest endpoint; plain RTMP does not add that TLS protection. Which one you can use—and which port and TLS version it needs—depends on the destination.
What changes between RTMP and RTMPS?
Both are ways for an encoder to send a live stream to an ingest server. RTMPS wraps that connection in TLS, helping protect stream data as it travels from the encoder to the endpoint. With plain RTMP, that TLS layer is absent. Amazon Web Services describes RTMPS as the secure option for Amazon IVS and recommends it unless a specific, verified use case requires RTMP (Amazon IVS Streaming Configuration).
That difference concerns transport security, not the picture itself. The protocol choice does not, on the evidence cited here, establish a difference in video quality or guarantee lower latency.
Does RTMPS encrypt the whole stream?
No. RTMPS encrypts the connection to the ingest endpoint; that alone does not establish end-to-end encryption through a streaming service’s internal processing and onward delivery. AWS says Amazon IVS encrypts data in transit for RTMPS ingest, but a stream may travel unencrypted within IVS for processing (IVS Data Protection; IVS Infrastructure Security).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If your requirement is encryption beyond the encoder-to-ingest connection, check the destination’s documentation for its handling of data after ingest. The “S” in RTMPS is not proof that every stage of a stream’s path is encrypted.
What port does RTMPS use?
There is no single port that applies to every RTMPS destination. The service configures its ingest endpoint and network requirements, so use the URL and port it provides. Amazon IVS’s low-latency streaming documentation gives these service-specific examples:

| Amazon IVS ingest choice | Example URL shape | Documented network port |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | rtmps://<IVS-ingest-server>/<IVS-stream-key> |
TCP 443 |
| Insecure RTMP | rtmp://<IVS-ingest-server>/<IVS-stream-key> |
TCP 1935 |
These are Amazon IVS examples, not universal protocol defaults. Its documentation also specifies TLS 1.2 or later for RTMPS. See AWS’s IVS network requirements and streaming configuration.
How do you set up RTMPS in OBS?
The exact labels and endpoint values depend on the service you are streaming to. For Amazon IVS, AWS describes OBS and other compatible software or hardware encoders as options; its documentation does not establish that every encoder or version is compatible. Follow the destination’s current setup guide rather than copying another service’s URL or port.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

- Get the destination’s ingest details. In its streaming configuration, locate the server URL, stream key, required protocol, port, and any TLS requirement. For IVS RTMPS, AWS documents a URL shaped like
rtmps://<IVS-ingest-server>/<IVS-stream-key>. - Check compatibility. Confirm that the OBS version and operating system you use support the requested RTMPS connection and TLS version. IVS requires TLS 1.2 or later.
- Enter the service-provided values in OBS. Open Settings → Stream, choose the service or custom-server option appropriate to the destination, and enter its server URL and stream key. For a custom endpoint, use the exact scheme and address supplied by the service; do not substitute
rtmp://forrtmps://. - Start a test stream. Check OBS’s connection status and the destination’s live preview or ingest status. Verify that the stream is reaching the intended channel before sharing it with viewers.
For AWS’s encoder setup guidance, see Step 4: Set Up Streaming Software.
How to troubleshoot an RTMPS connection
- The destination rejects the connection: Check whether it permits insecure RTMP at all. On Amazon IVS, RTMP can be rejected when insecure ingest is disabled; AWS documents
insecureIngestas defaulting to false in its real-time ingest configuration (Streaming Configuration). - OBS cannot connect to the server: Compare the URL scheme, hostname, path, and port against the destination’s current instructions. A mismatched RTMP/RTMPS scheme or a port copied from another provider can prevent connection.
- TLS negotiation fails: Confirm the encoder supports the TLS version required by the endpoint. Amazon IVS requires TLS 1.2 or later for RTMPS; other destinations may specify different requirements.
- The connection times out: Check that the required outbound port and destination are reachable through the local network, firewall, or hosting provider. AWS lists TCP 443 for IVS RTMPS and TCP 1935 for IVS insecure RTMP; use the correct service-specific requirement.
- The stream connects but security expectations are unclear: Verify what is protected after ingest. RTMPS only establishes TLS protection to the ingest endpoint, not necessarily throughout a provider’s internal processing.
Keeping a YouTube stream live without a computer at home
RTMP and RTMPS describe how an encoder connects to an ingest endpoint; they do not themselves keep a prerecorded stream running around the clock. If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it looping without leaving a computer or home connection running. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera feeds.
