Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Amazon Prime Video’s closed captions are controlled from the playback menu, but the exact route depends on where you are watching. On a computer, phone, tablet, Fire TV, smart TV, streaming box, or game console, start the video and look for the Closed Caption or Subtitles icon. Select a language to turn captions on, or choose the off option to remove them.
If the icon is missing, the title may not include a subtitle or caption track. Availability also varies by language, device, and individual documentary or film.
Turn captions on or off in a web browser
- Open Prime Video and start the documentary or other title.
- Move the pointer over the video to display the playback controls.
- Select the Closed Caption or Subtitles icon.
- Choose the available subtitle or caption language to turn captions on. To remove them, open the same menu and select the off option.
Some supported browsers and devices also show Subtitles Settings. These controls can include text size, text color, and preset caption styles. The options shown are not identical for every title or device.
Use the Prime Video app on a phone or tablet
- Start playback in the Prime Video app.
- Tap the screen if the playback controls are hidden.
- Tap the Closed Caption or Subtitles icon.
- Select a caption or subtitle track. Select the off option when you want to disable it.
This procedure applies to supported phones and tablets, including Fire tablets. A title may offer captions on one device but not another, so the absence of a track is not necessarily an account problem.

- Select Accessibility or Captions.

Why the caption option is missing
| What you see | Likely explanation | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No Closed Caption or Subtitles icon | The title does not have a caption or subtitle track for that device or region. | Check another title, or verify the title’s available languages before playback. |
| The controls are not visible | Playback controls are hidden. | Tap the video on a phone or tablet; move the pointer on a computer; press Enter or the equivalent controller button on a connected device. |
| Only some languages appear | Language availability is title-specific. | Choose from the tracks listed for that title. Prime Video does not provide every language for every program. |
| Captions look different on another device | Styling features depend on the device and app. | Check Subtitles Settings in Prime Video, or the accessibility and caption settings on Roku or another connected device. |
Captions, subtitles, and audio descriptions are separate
Prime Video may list subtitles, closed captions, and audio-description tracks as separate options. Subtitles generally translate spoken dialogue, while closed captions can also identify relevant sounds and speakers. Audio descriptions narrate visual information and are not a caption setting. The available combination depends on the title and playback device.

There is no universal Prime Video switch
Older instructions sometimes direct viewers to Account & Settings for a single account-wide caption switch. That is not the current general method. Prime Video’s documented procedure is to change captions from the playback controls, while Roku and Apple TV may apply their own device-level settings. If captions keep returning, check the settings on the device where you watch rather than assuming there is one Prime Video account setting controlling every screen.

How do I turn off closed captions on Prime Video?
During playback, open the Closed Caption or Subtitles menu and select the off option. On Roku, you can also use Home → Settings → Accessibility or Captions → Captions mode → Off.
Why does Prime Video not show a CC or subtitle icon?
The title may not include captions or subtitles for your device, region, or selected version. Caption and language availability varies by title and device.

Some supported devices expose text size, color, and preset styles under Subtitles Settings. Roku manages caption appearance through its own device settings and does not support Prime Video subtitle presets.
The Bottom Line
