The answer depends on where you use Bumble. Outside the United States, Bumble’s current support instructions show a switch at Profile → Settings → Type of connection: choose BFF to switch to friendship matching or Date to return to dating. In the United States, BFF is no longer a mode inside the main Bumble app; use Bumble’s separate BFF app for friendship connections. Before switching from Date to BFF, note that Bumble says your existing matches will be removed.
Availability and menu guidance below reflect Bumble support information checked August 16, 2026.
Before you switch: understand what may be lost
Bumble warns that moving from Date Mode to BFF Mode removes existing matches. Do not assume those matches will return if you switch back. If you want to keep a way to contact someone, save the relevant details before changing modes.

Bumble says that turning Date Mode off through Profile → Settings → Date mode permanently deletes Date Mode chats and connections, and the action cannot be undone. If you only want to pause dating, do not turn Date Mode off unless you accept that loss. See Bumble’s guidance on managing Date Mode.

Switch to BFF outside the United States
Bumble’s current support instructions describe this route for users outside the U.S. The exact labels or screen layout can vary with app updates, but the documented steps are:
- Open the Bumble mobile app.
- Tap the profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Tap the Settings gear at the top of your profile screen.
- Tap Type of connection.
- Select BFF.
- Tap Continue with BFF.
Bumble should then show friendship-focused profiles rather than dating profiles. To switch back, follow the same route—Profile → Settings → Type of connection—and select Date.

Bumble describes BFF and dating as separate, customizable profiles, so you can tailor your friendship profile independently. That does not mean the mode change preserves your Date matches: Bumble separately warns that moving from Date to BFF removes them. Details are in Bumble’s BFF Mode instructions.

In the United States, use the separate BFF app
If you are in the U.S. and cannot find Type of connection or a BFF option, that is expected under Bumble’s current instructions. BFF Mode is no longer available inside the main Bumble app. Use the separate BFF app for friendship connections and keep using the regular Bumble app for dating.

Bumble says the standalone BFF experience replaced both the former in-app BFF Mode and the Bumble For Friends app in the U.S. It includes friendship features with one-to-one and group-oriented community options. Treat it as a separate app experience, not a hidden tab in Bumble. See Bumble’s notice about changes to Bumble For Friends and BFF Mode.
Older videos and guides may show a universal in-app mode switch. They may reflect an earlier interface or a region where the switch is still documented; they do not describe the current U.S. setup.

Matches, chats, profiles, and purchases
- Date matches: Bumble says they are removed when you move from Date to BFF. Do not count on switching back to restore them.
- Date chats and connections: Turning Date Mode off is a separate action, and Bumble says it permanently deletes those chats and connections. This is not a reversible pause.
- Profiles: Bumble describes BFF and dating profiles as separate and independently customizable. That description does not guarantee that every account detail or item of data carries over in every situation.
- Subscriptions and add-ons: Do not assume a paid plan, purchase, or add-on automatically transfers to the standalone BFF app. For account-specific purchase questions, consult Bumble’s purchase restoration and transfer guidance or contact support.
If the BFF option is missing outside the U.S.
First confirm your current region: availability differs by location, and Bumble’s instructions do not establish that in-app BFF is available in every country. If you are outside the U.S. and the documented menu is missing, try these steps in order:
- Update Bumble in your device’s app store.
- Force-close the app and reopen it; if needed, log out and back in.
- Check that the app has the permissions it needs, including location, and that your device has available storage.
- On Android, clear Bumble’s app cache.
- If the menu is still missing, reinstall only after confirming you know how to log back in.
- Contact Bumble Support with your device type, operating system, screenshots, and a description of the missing option.
Bumble’s troubleshooting guidance covers app updates, restarts, permissions, cache clearing, and reinstalling. Do not delete your account as a troubleshooting step; account deletion is not a way to change connection mode and may cause avoidable data loss. A VPN or location spoofing is not a Bumble-supported workaround.

Can you switch on desktop?
No current desktop procedure is available: Bumble says Bumble Web has been discontinued and directs users to its mobile apps. See Bumble’s Web update.
Bumble Bizz is also not a substitute connection mode to switch into; Bumble says it is being phased out. Check its Bizz availability notice for the current status.
