You can keep an MP4 playing as a YouTube live stream from an India-based Linux VPS by enabling live streaming on your channel, using FFmpeg to read and loop the file in real time, and sending it to YouTube over RTMPS with your channel’s stream key. The VPS replaces a computer at home, but continuous operation still depends on your VPS limits, network, and recovery setup.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check eligibility and streaming methods in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
- A Linux VPS with FFmpeg installed, enough storage for the MP4, and outbound network capacity comfortably above your stream bitrate. Check the provider’s transfer limits and fair-use terms; no India VPS provider, bandwidth allowance, or price is established here.
- An MP4 with compatible video and audio streams, plus a stream server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Permission to stream every visual and audio element in the file. A video being available online does not itself grant live-streaming rights.
Enable YouTube Live and get the stream details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s setup flow to enable live streaming if needed. Channel verification and the absence of restrictions in the prior 90 days are prerequisites. See YouTube’s eligibility and setup instructions.
- Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow. In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key that YouTube provides. Follow the Live Control Room preview and control flow to start the broadcast: YouTube encoder setup.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not put it in a public repository, a web page, or logs accessible to other people. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls before streaming again.
Prepare the VPS and MP4
Install and inspect FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using the package manager or method appropriate for your Linux distribution, then check the installed build’s options with ffmpeg -h. FFmpeg builds can differ, so do not assume every option is available or behaves identically across versions. The official FFmpeg command-line documentation explains input and output options.
Check the file before copying its streams
The simplest command uses -c:v copy -c:a copy, which avoids re-encoding. That only works if the MP4’s codecs, timestamps, frame structure, and audio/video streams are accepted by YouTube’s ingest path. If the stream fails health checks or the input is incompatible, transcode to settings supported by YouTube’s encoder guidance. A file without an audio track may need an audio track added; do not assume an audio-less input will be accepted.
Loop the MP4 to YouTube with FFmpeg
Use this as a template, not a tested command. Replace the input filename and the quoted output URL with the actual server endpoint and stream key shown in Live Control Room:

"rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"-rereads the file at its native frame rate rather than sending it as fast as the VPS can process it. FFmpeg describes this as useful when output flow speed matters, including live streaming; see FFmpeg documentation.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. FFmpeg’s option documentation defines-1as infinite looping: FFmpeg option reference.- Input options belong before the input they apply to; output options belong before the output URL. The output format here is FLV, sent to the RTMPS endpoint supplied by YouTube.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP through SSL/TLS. Use the secure endpoint supplied in Live Control Room rather than guessing one. See YouTube encoder recommendations and the RTMPS ingestion guide.
Choose settings and confirm stream health
If you must re-encode rather than copy the input, use YouTube’s current encoder settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. For RTMPS stereo audio, it lists 128 Kbps as a recommended audio bitrate and 44.1 kHz stereo sampling. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that a particular MP4 can be copied unchanged. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for supported codecs and the applicable bitrate guidance.

- Start FFmpeg and check that it connects without errors. Keep its output available for troubleshooting, but protect the stream key if it appears in the command line or logs.
- Open the stream preview and check that the picture and sound are present before taking the stream live, following YouTube’s current Live Control Room flow.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the VPS process during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health; a successful process start alone does not prove that viewers receive a healthy stream.
Keep the VPS stream running and recover from failures
For unattended operation, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd, capture logs in a location with appropriate access controls, and configure a restart policy. Monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream-health dashboard. A supervisor can restart a failed process, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every VPS, network, or YouTube ingest failure.
Plan for outbound bandwidth above the configured media bitrate to allow for network variation, and confirm the VPS provider’s sustained transfer and fair-use policies. The sources available here do not establish India-specific VPS performance or a provider’s uninterrupted-service guarantee.

Protect copyright and plan for long broadcasts
Clear rights before looping
YouTube’s terms say creators represent that they have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may replace the image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it. Even licensed material may need the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Check YouTube’s live-stream terms and copyright enforcement guidance before broadcasting.
Do not rely on YouTube as the only archive
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a recording, keep your own copy or plan shorter broadcast sessions around the viewer experience. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
