How to Prevent Audio and Video Drift in an FFmpeg YouTube Loop Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by measuring the source files and locating when sync breaks; there is no universal FFmpeg flag that fixes every loop stream. A constant offset, drift that grows over time, and a jump at each loop boundary point to different problems. Probe the inputs, check loop placement and joins, then test a sustained private or unlisted YouTube stream before relying on it.

First identify what kind of sync problem you have

Compare audio and video at the start, after an extended run, and immediately after a loop restart. Treat the pattern as a diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular cause.

What you observe What to investigate first
Audio is consistently early or late from the start A fixed initial alignment issue, including differing input start times.
Audio and video become farther apart as the stream runs Inconsistent timing or clocks, source timestamps, and sustained encoding behavior.
Sync jumps at each repeat Whether the input can seek back to a valid point, whether video begins on a keyframe, and what happens at the loop join.

These symptoms can overlap. Without the source files, probe output, FFmpeg build details, and a drift trace, the cause in a particular stream cannot be established.

Collect evidence before changing the command

  1. Record the setup. Note the full FFmpeg version and build, operating environment, complete command with the YouTube stream key removed, and whether audio and video come from one muxed file or separate inputs.
  2. Probe every source with ffprobe. Record each stream’s codec, time base, start time, duration, frame rate, and sample rate. Check whether timestamps are monotonic, then compare audio and video start times and endpoints.
  3. Observe sync at several points. Note whether the offset is present immediately, grows over time, or changes at each repeat. A sustained test is more informative than checking only the first few seconds.
  4. Keep a known-good baseline. Change one relevant factor at a time and compare the result. Otherwise, a changed sync result will not tell you which adjustment mattered.

FFmpeg’s input synchronization behavior depends on source timestamps derived from the same clock for expected results. Its documentation also notes that it makes no input sync adjustment if either input lacks a starting timestamp. See the FFmpeg documentation for the installed build’s behavior and syntax.

Check looping and the join

Put -stream_loop before the input it applies to

-stream_loop is an input option, so place it immediately before that input’s -i. Use -stream_loop -1 to request an infinite loop. If audio and video are separate inputs and both should repeat, configure looping for each input that needs to repeat. Decide explicitly whether the two sources should restart together or on different cycles.

For example, the placement pattern is -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4. This illustrates option placement only; it is not a complete streaming command or a guarantee of seamless sync.

Test whether the source can loop cleanly

Stream-copy looping depends on the source being seekable to a valid point. Non-seekable raw H.264 and video that does not start on a keyframe can cause a loop not to repeat as expected. Test several joins locally and inspect both audio and video around each boundary.

If a join is bad, timestamp flags alone may not fix it. Consider preparing a seekable intermediate or re-encoding as appropriate, then test again. A loop-ready file can simplify a live workflow, but the correct preparation depends on the media and the observed failure.

Choose timestamp and frame-sync options from the measurements

Use -itsoffset only for a measured fixed offset

-itsoffset shifts an input’s timestamps by a duration. It may address a measured fixed lead or lag, but it is not a general cure for drift that accumulates over time or a discontinuity at a loop boundary. Measure the offset first and confirm that the adjustment improves alignment throughout the test.

Understand the video frame-sync behavior

FFmpeg’s documented video synchronization modes differ in how they treat frames and timestamps: passthrough preserves demuxer timestamps; constant-frame-rate mode duplicates or drops frames to reach the requested frame rate; variable-frame-rate mode passes timestamped frames or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps; automatic mode selects according to muxer capability. A muxer may further modify timestamps.

Use the current per-stream or output options documented for your installed FFmpeg build. Inspect the output rather than selecting a mode by habit: frame dropping or duplication can change cadence without correcting a bad source timeline.

Choose between stream copy and re-encoding carefully

Stream copy avoids re-encoding, but it does not repair an unseekable source or a broken loop join. Re-encoding can be appropriate when preparing a loop-ready intermediate, but it adds processing and must be tested for sustained operation. A third-party long-stream guide reports drift in one live re-encoding workflow; that is a troubleshooting lead, not evidence that all live transcodes drift or that one pipeline is best for every source.

Do not infer a general performance or stability result from isolated timing benchmarks. The relevant test is whether your actual inputs stay in sync across multiple loop joins and an extended live run.

Validate the stream before publishing it publicly

  1. Run a sustained private or unlisted YouTube Live test using the intended source and command.
  2. Monitor FFmpeg’s output and watch playback at the start, after an extended period, and across loop boundaries.
  3. Compare the observed sync pattern with your local tests. If the fault appears only at joins, return to seekability and keyframe checks; if it grows continuously, revisit timestamps, clocks, and the live encoding workflow.
  4. Check output settings against YouTube’s official live encoder help page. Numeric requirements can change, so do not rely on old copied command lines.

For a documentary channel, verify that you have the rights needed to stream the video and audio, including music and other embedded material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright requirements before going public. Technical sync does not establish permission to broadcast content.

Common troubleshooting paths

  • The separate audio does not repeat: check whether -stream_loop is placed before that audio input’s -i as well as before the video input.
  • The stream is synchronized initially but drifts later: compare the source timestamps, start times, and endpoints; check whether the inputs’ timestamps derive from the same clock. Do not treat a fixed offset as a cure for accumulating drift.
  • Sync changes at every repeat: test each join locally and investigate seekability and the video’s starting keyframe. Prepare a suitable intermediate if the source cannot loop cleanly as used.
  • An offset adjustment fixes the start but not later playback: -itsoffset shifts timestamps; it does not by itself correct cumulative timing differences or loop discontinuities.
  • A frame-sync change alters cadence but not alignment: inspect the source timeline and muxer behavior. Frame duplication or dropping is not a substitute for diagnosing timestamps.
  • A local test works but the live stream does not: compare the exact live command, FFmpeg build, and extended playback behavior, then verify encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the problem is keeping a YouTube loop running rather than diagnosing an FFmpeg command, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer does not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. This replaces running the loop from your own FFmpeg setup; it does not diagnose or repair source-file sync issues. Start a StreamNeo trial.
