You can send an MP4 to YouTube Live with FFmpeg without re-encoding if its video and audio streams are already compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements. Use FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing and stream-copy options, but remember that “MP4” names a container—not the codecs or settings inside it. Inspect the file first, then test the feed in YouTube Studio.
What “without re-encoding” means
An MP4 is a container that can hold different encoded video and audio streams. Its filename alone does not establish whether YouTube Live can accept those streams.
FFmpeg’s -c copy copies encoded packets without decoding and encoding them again. That avoids an additional encode and its processing cost or quality loss, but it also means FFmpeg cannot use this method to change codecs, resize video, alter frame rate or bitrate, apply filters, or restructure keyframes. Stream copy may fail if the destination format cannot carry a source stream. FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation explains the limitation.

ffprobe -hide_banner input.mp4
Review the listed video and audio streams: codec, resolution, frame rate, profile or level where shown, bitrate if available, and the number of tracks. The command template below selects the first video and first audio stream only. If the file has multiple tracks, no audio, or a different intended track, change the mapping deliberately.
Compare the streams with current ingest guidance
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS live encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; it recommends RTMPS. These are current online recommendations accessed in 2026, not a guarantee that every file using a listed codec will pass unchanged. Check the full live guidance before an event because its settings can change.

For H.264, YouTube’s current recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Its AV1/H.265 recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These figures are YouTube guidance accessed in 2026; choose settings appropriate to the source and connection rather than treating a target bitrate as proof that your upload can sustain it. YouTube recommends checking upload capacity and testing before going live. See its encoder settings and live streaming setup guidance.
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance supports 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS only for AAC. If the source’s codec, timing, bitrate, keyframe spacing, or other encoded properties are unsuitable, stream copy cannot correct them; use a transcode instead.

Get the YouTube destination URL and stream key
- Enable live streaming for the channel if it has not been enabled. YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours, so allow time before a first broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and activation information.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use YouTube’s exact values; do not assume one fixed ingest URL. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the Live Control Room workflow.
- Keep the stream key private. It is a credential that directs an encoder feed to your channel. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, recording, or source-control repository. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Run FFmpeg with stream copy
For a file that already contains compatible video and audio, this is a template—not a tested command for every FFmpeg build or file:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv 'RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY'
-rereads the input at its native frame rate instead of sending a file as fast as possible. FFmpeg documents real-time pacing as useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. Put input options such as-rebefore the relevant-i. See FFmpeg’s main options.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream, and-map 0:a:0selects the first audio stream. Change these if the desired tracks have different indexes; remove or adjust audio mapping if there is no audio.-c:v copy -c:a copycopies the selected encoded video and audio without re-encoding.-f flvexplicitly selects the FLV output muxer, commonly used with RTMP-family streaming. If FFmpeg rejects the muxer or stream, check the installed build and destination requirements.- Replace
RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEYwith the exact server URL and key YouTube provides for the selected stream. Protect the key as you would a password.
Check your installed FFmpeg version and its help output if an option or muxer is unavailable. The command is an illustrative template based on FFmpeg’s documented pacing and stream-copy behavior and YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance; it has not been run against your file or stream.

Preflight and go live
- Inspect the source with
ffprobe -hide_banner input.mp4; confirm that the mapped tracks are the ones you want. - Compare the actual codecs and encoded properties with YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Confirm that the selected output protocol and muxer suit the destination.
- Check that your internet upload can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends a speed test and testing before the broadcast; allow headroom rather than assuming the published target bitrate matches your connection.
- Start FFmpeg and look for errors in its output. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check the stream-health messages.
- Check representative motion and audio before the event. For a scheduled stream, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready; connecting FFmpeg does not necessarily make the scheduled event public by itself.
- When finished, stop the FFmpeg process and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s streaming workflow.
When stream copy is not enough
| Approach | What it does | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stream copy | Passes through existing encoded streams without decoding and re-encoding. | The source streams and their encoded properties already suit the output and YouTube ingest. | Avoids another encode, but cannot change codecs, apply filters, resize, retime, or alter keyframe structure; incompatible streams may fail. |
| Transcode | Decodes and encodes media to change one or more encoded properties. | You need a supported codec, a different frame size or rate, a changed bitrate or keyframe interval, or another transformation. | Requires encoding work and may affect quality; it provides control that stream copy does not. |
FFmpeg describes stream copy as avoiding decoding and encoding, while noting that it cannot apply filters and can fail when the output format cannot accept a source stream. If a required property must change, choose a transcode rather than expecting -c copy to repair the source. Read the FFmpeg documentation.
Troubleshooting common failures
YouTube rejects the feed immediately
- Check that the URL and key belong to the selected stream and that the key has not been reset.
- Confirm the output protocol and muxer are appropriate for the destination and supported by your FFmpeg build.
- Review FFmpeg’s error output and Live Control Room’s stream-health details.
Video is unsupported, missing, or black
- Use
ffprobeto identify the actual video codec and properties; an MP4 extension is not enough. - Compare them with YouTube’s current ingest guidance. If codec, profile, frame rate, keyframe cadence, or another encoded property must change, transcode: stream copy cannot alter it.
Audio is absent or rejected
- Confirm the file has an audio stream and that your
-mapselects the intended track. - For RTMP/RTMPS, check YouTube’s listed AAC or MP3 options. If the source audio is not suitable, re-encode that stream rather than copying it unchanged.
The stream buffers or health is poor
- Check upload capacity with a speed test and compare it with the stream’s actual bitrate.
- Reduce resolution or bitrate to a level your connection can sustain; test before the event. The recommended encoder figures are targets, not a measurement of your network.
Keyframes are too far apart or the resolution is wrong
Stream copy preserves the source’s encoded structure. If its keyframe interval exceeds YouTube’s recommendation or the resolution needs to change, re-encode to create the required output.
