How to Limit Memory Use on a 24/7 YouTube Music Streaming PC

Measure memory use first, then reduce unnecessary Chrome tabs, extensions, and Windows background apps without expecting Memory Saver to unload the tab playing music.

Start by finding which process is using memory; don’t install a “PC cleaner” or buy RAM before you know there is a shortage. In Windows Task Manager, identify whether Chrome or another app is the main consumer. If Chrome is using a lot, its own Task Manager can show whether the cause is a tab, extension, or background page. Then reduce unnecessary work while leaving the tab that is playing your music alone.

Find what is using memory before changing settings

Check Windows Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.

  2. In Processes, review the Memory column and identify applications using an unusually large share of memory. Check Performance for the overall memory picture.

  3. Look for applications you recognize and do not need while the PC is streaming. Do not end unfamiliar Windows or system processes just because they use memory.

Task Manager helps identify the actual consumer; there is no universal amount of RAM that every always-on music PC must use. Windows labels and layout can vary somewhat between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s performance guidance recommends monitoring resource use and closing apps that are not needed.

Inspect Chrome’s individual tasks

  1. In Chrome, open More tools > Task Manager.

  2. Sort by Memory to see which tabs, extensions, or entries such as Background page are using the most.

  3. End only a task you recognize and do not need. Ending a task can interrupt its work or discard unsaved changes.

This is more useful than treating Chrome as one indivisible process: the list can reveal a particular extension or background page to address. Google documents this procedure in its Chrome performance help.

Use Chrome Memory Saver for tabs you are not using

In Chrome, open Settings > Performance and turn on Memory Saver. It deactivates eligible inactive tabs to free resources; a tab reloads when you return to it. Google offers three levels:

Level What to expect Trade-off
Moderate Waits longer before inactive tabs are deactivated, for moderate savings. Less aggressive about freeing memory; inactive pages stay loaded longer.
Balanced Google’s recommended level. A middle ground between memory savings and how soon inactive tabs reload.
Maximum Deactivates inactive tabs after a shorter interval for greater savings. More inactive tabs may need to reload when revisited.

The tab actively playing YouTube audio is not the one to expect Memory Saver to unload: active audio or video playback can keep a tab from deactivation. Use the feature mainly to reduce the footprint of other eligible tabs, not to free the memory used by the playback tab.

If another site must stay loaded for your workflow, add it under Always keep these sites active in the Performance settings. Google documents URL patterns, including a YouTube watch URL example, in its Memory Saver instructions. Keeping a site active is convenient, but that page retains resources instead of being discarded.

Reduce unnecessary Chrome and Windows background work

Remove browser work you do not need

  • Use Chrome Task Manager to identify extensions or background pages that are actually consuming memory.

  • Remove or disable unwanted extensions, but leave anything the streaming workflow depends on enabled.

Startup items can be useful, so base changes on what the PC actually needs rather than disabling everything. Microsoft’s Windows performance tips cover monitoring use and reviewing startup apps.

Know when a hardware upgrade is justified

Microsoft’s general guidance says, “If you primarily browse the web, work on documents, or stream videos online, aim for at least 4 GB of memory,” and that “8 GB of memory is recommended to keep your device running long term.” The support page does not state a publication year for these figures. They are broad recommendations, not a diagnosis of this particular 24/7 PC or a guarantee that those amounts will be sufficient for its other workloads. See Microsoft’s memory guidance.

Consider adding RAM only if measurements show memory remains constrained after unnecessary work is removed, and after checking the PC’s current memory, platform, and upgrade compatibility. No PC model or memory measurements are available here, so a specific purchase recommendation would be guesswork.

Manually changing the Windows page file is not a routine fix for high memory use. Microsoft says Windows’ default virtual-memory settings generally perform optimally; see its page-file guidance.

Troubleshoot common memory problems

What you see What to check What to do
Chrome is using a large share of memory. Chrome Task Manager, sorted by Memory. Identify a specific unnecessary tab, extension, or background page; close or end only work you recognize and can interrupt.
Other tabs remain open while the music plays. Chrome Settings > Performance. Enable Memory Saver. Choose a more aggressive level only if you accept that inactive tabs may reload sooner.
The active YouTube music tab remains in memory. Whether it is actively playing audio or video. This is expected behavior for Memory Saver: playback can keep the tab active. Reduce eligible tabs and other background work instead.
Memory use remains high after browser changes. Windows Task Manager’s Processes and Performance views. Check for another app or startup program before considering hardware changes.
A tab or page reloads after being inactive. Memory Saver level and whether the site is excluded. Use Always keep these sites active for a site that must remain loaded, understanding it will retain resources.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live around the clock from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a different setup from keeping a browser playing music on a home PC. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube only.
